3 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in folding chairs, and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a folding chair that. is quickly and readily applied to seat boards in ball parks, circus tents and the like, whereby the back of the user will be comfortably supported.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a folding chair including novel and improved means for hinging the seat section to the back section, so that the same may be conveniently folded when not in use.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a folding chair including a back, section so designed. as to give the maximum support and rest to the back of the user.
A still further aim of the present invention is toprovidea folding chair that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the present chair, and with dotted lines showing the clamping members in a folded position;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof, showing the same applied to a seat board;
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially through the center of the chair shown in Figure 2, and with dotted lines showing the position of the back section in a folded position.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the fulcrum means used in conjunction with the present invention; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary top plan view of the side members forming the seat frame.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein, for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I represents the seat section of the present invention generally, comprising a substantially rectangular frame l2 of suitable material having a support board M, of an area slightly greater than the opening in the frame, removably secured to the upper face of the frame.
Secured by nails or the like to the upper face of the frame and covering the board I4 is a seat cover 18. Suitable padding [8' is interposed between the frame, the board l4 and the cover [6.
Fixedly secured to the lower faces of the side members ill of the frame I2 is a pair of spaced parallel, longitudinal runners or wedge-shaped members 20 that bear upon a suitable supporting structure such as a seat board 22, to retain, the seat frame at an inclined angle with the seat board 22.
U-shaped members 24 having one of their legs rigidly secured to a hinge 25 removably carried by the opposing faces of the wedge members 20 engage the forward edge of'the seat board 22, and clamp screws 26 carried by the web portion of the members 24' adjustably bear against the under side of the seat board 22, for retaining the seat in position thereto.
Removably secured to the upper face of the frame H2 at the rear corners thereof is one leg of a pair of angle iron fulcrums or ears 28 having a notch 30 at their upper corners, whereby rigidity of the structure is assured and so that the reduced width leg will not project outward from the back rest or section which will presently be described.
The numeral 32 represents the back section of the present chair generally, comprising a pair of spaced parallel side members 34 having their forward and rear side edges converging upwardly. The enlarged lower terminals of these side members are pivoted, as at 36, between notches 31 provided in the rear outer corners of side members l9 and to the outer faces of the angle fulorums 28.
Extending between the side members 34 and suitably secured thereto, is a pair of spaced parallel cross members 38 between which there is looped a back covering 40 that is secured to the rear faces of the cross members. A suitable padding 42 is interposed between the covering 40 and the opposing faces of the side members.
Also fixedly secured between the side members 34 adjacent their free ends is a carrying panel 44 which is provided with a hand-receiving opening 46. I
One end of a strap 48 is rigidly secured to th lower face of the frame l2 and the free end of the strap is provided with a female snap 59 that engages the male snap 52 carried by the rear face of the panel 44 for holding the back section in a folded position relative to the seat section, as shown best in dotted lines in Figure 3.
It should be noted that to further support the side members 34 and to strengthen the back sec- 3 tion, there is provided a further cross member 54 rigidly secured between the side members adjacent their hinged ends.
When not in use, the clamping members 24 may be folded inwardly to rest upon the lower face of board I4. It is preferred that when in this folded position the lower or outer edge of the members 24 will lie in the same plane as the side member IQ of the seat frame so that the device may be conveniently handled when folded without any protrusions thereof and whereby the same may be packed into a relatively small area case or the like facilitating transporting of the same.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
said sections in a folded position, a pair of longitudinal wedges fixed to the seat for holding said seat at an inclined position to a supporting surface on which the same is applied, said attaching means including clamps and hinges securing said clamps to said seat, said clamps being folda- 4 ble against said seat and between said wedges.
2. A foldable chair comprising a seat section and a back section, said seat section including a substantially rectangular frame member, a pair of angle members secured to one end of said frame member, said angle members having upstanding leg portions, said back section including a pair of side members pivoted adjacent one of their ends to the upstanding leg portions of said angle members, upper and lower cross members terminally fixed to said side members, a flexible apron embracing both of said cross members, 2. padding enclosed within said apron, a pair of longitudinal wedge members fixed to and depending from said frame member and extending throughout the length of said seat section, a pair of clamps for attaching the seat section to a supporting structure, hinges securing said clamps to the seat section for swinging movement of said clamps transversely between the wedge members, a seat padding mounted on said frame member and secured to the hinges, and means for holding said sections in juxtaposition.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said clamps include U-shaped members having outer leg portions and adjustable pressure screws carried by the outer leg portions of said U-shaped members.
