This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a coat or jacket unit of male attire, and, more particularly, the aim is to provide a novel and valuable such jacket which is readily convertible at will either into a sports-wear jacket, a semi-sports-wear jacket, or a coat for ordinary street or formal wear.

According to the invention, a main coat o1' jacket structure is provided so made that the principal coat body, Which may be self-complete as to permanently inbuilt elements such as collar and sleeves and otherwise so constructed that when worn solely as said structure there is provided in its entirety a sack coat for street or formal wear; in combination with additions including readily attachable and detachable panel members, these preferably both for the front and back of the jacket, whereby such sack coat or the like may be substantiallyinstantaneously converted at will into either a sports-wear jacket or into a semi-sports-wear jacket.

As the invention is further preferably carried out, said additions comprise belt-like members, these desirably permanently carried by the panel members, adapted to be interengaged and also engaged with elements carried by the main jacket structure, when the new article of apparel is arranged for other than street or formal wear.

In the connection just mentioned, a further feature of the invention is that while the elements last referred to are preferably buttons, these permanently carried by said main jacket structure for engagement with said belt-like members and so to assist in proper inclusion of said panelmembers when one or more of the latter are to be incorporated in the jacket, simple and practicable means are provided whereby said buttons or the like may be redisposed to become hidden at the inside of the jacket when this is to be used for street or formal wear.

A further feature of the invention, in combination with all the above, is the provision on said main jacket structure of a plurality of external pockets having their parts so constructed and arranged that substantially instantaneously such a pocket, when in a location on the main jacket structure such that said pocketl is to be exposed after securement in place of any one of said panelmembers, may be transformed from a socalled concealed pocket into a so-called patchpocket.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a frontal perspective view, showing a now favored embodiment of the invention, as worn by a man or boy, with the coat now converted into a sports-wear jacket.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the rear of said coat as thus converted.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view, this being a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig, 2.

Fig. 4 is a similar view, this taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 5 is also a detail view, this fragmentarily showing a portion of the exterior of the main jacket structure in the vicinity of one of the buttons above mentioned.

Fig. 6 shows the same parts as in Fig. 5, but now with the button swung to hiding at the interior of the main jacket structure.

Fig. 7 is a section taken on the line 'I--l of Fis. 5.

Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. l, but showing the coat reconverted into one wearable on the street or at a more or less formal occasion.

Fig. 9 is a View similar to Fig. 2, but showing the rear of the coat as thus reconverted.

Fig. 10 illustrates one of the two front panelmembers, in plan and spread flat.

Fig. 1l similarly illustrates the single back panel-member.

Fig` 12 is a fragmentary inside view of the jacket.

Fig. 13 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line I3-3 of Fig. 12.

Referring now to the drawings more in fdettail, and rst to Figs. 12 and 13, the new coat as here illustrated includes the usual inner pocket I il and an upwardly extending secret; pocket compartment I I so that the upper end of a valuable article I2 which is placed in the inner pocket I0 may be covered by the upwardly extending pocket compartment I I and thus hide the article i2 and simultaneously prevent it from being lost.

As shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the coat includes the already mentioned main jacket structure, this shown, conventionally, as comprising a back section I5, sideand-front sections it and I'I, sleeves i8, I8, a collar I9 with lapels 20, a series of buttons and buttonholes 2| at the front opening of the coat, a left-hand-side bre-ast pocket 22, and a pair of side pockets each of which as a whole is marked 23.`

like and horizontally aligned bands 26, 26 are 'provided at the front of the coat and across the breast portions thereof at a level slightly below or substantially the same as that of the band 25.

The bands 25 and 2S are so included, as shown in Fig. 3 in the case of the band 25, as to provide therebehind closed top and open bottom groovelike recesses for accommodationl of theupper ends ofthe panel-members and the securement of said ends by snap-fasteners or the like to be referred to in a moment.

broken-lines delineated portions', of thel pockets 2S, 23 are concealed, and so then these` pockets present the same appearance as the pocket 22'; and therefore in all material respects the coat is eminently suitable for streetor formal Wear.

To convert this coat into one for semisports wear, there may be employed merely` the.` back panel-member ofv Fig. 11, this designated 2l', or merely the two front panel-members 28 (seeFig. 10, particularly). To convert said coat of Figs. 8 and 9 into a sports-wearl one, then all threev of these panels are employed, to produce the jacket of Figs. l and 2.

The two panel-members 28 are alike, except that, aswill-be noted from Fig. 1, andfor a reason whichnow should be self-evident, their main or panel portions are cut onetov the right hand and the other to the; left hand. At a suitable point along the seami3l between the main jacket structures back section l5 and side section I8, and at a. corresponding point along the seam S8 between said'sectionv l 5 and the side section Il, there isa slit or slot-like opening; the iirst-named such opening designated 39. Adjacent to each of said openingsis a button 48, stitched in place as at ll but with the post-like bundle of stitch-lengths between the under side of the button and the main jacket structure of slightly longer length than would ordinarily be used.

To transform, thecoat. or. jacket of` Figs.` 8' and 9 into the coat or jacket of Figs. l and 2, all that is required is to attach the panel- sections 2l and 28, 28 to the bands 25 and 26, with the upper ends of said sections inserted behind said bands and by use of the snap fasteners ZQ-B and 3l-32; then, with the buttons fi@ exposed as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and in full lines in Fig. 7, couple up the belt- members 33 and 35 at both of the opposite sides of the garment by passing the two buttons 4l) rst through the buttonholes 36 and then through the buttonholes t; and finally suitably connect the short end portions 35h of the beltmember 35 at the front of the garment, as by way of the buttonholes carried by said end portions and one of the buttons of the button and buttonhole means 2 I.

`In Figs. 3, 4 and 7, various linings are indicated at 42.

The removable front and back panels 2i and 28 may beprovided with knife pleats, box pleats, inverted pleats or'the like, or they .may be shirred or leftv plain, for all kinds of sports-wear. Also, one orv more of these panels may be of the twotoneA kind. The panels, further, may be made of the same or a different material than that used for the main jacketl structure; whichv difference may be one ofY quality, weave, yarn ma.- terial, pattern, dominant coloration or otherwise.

The construction of the pockets 23 is also a feature of the invention. With the flaps d3 thereof stitched in place so as to be Vhingedly connected along their tops to the upper end of one of the two Walls of an open top bag structure 34, this structure -M is stitched together so as a: whole to be connected along its top to the inside of the main jacket structure adjacent to the lower edge of the conventional pocket top open.- ing on said' mainy jacket structure finished; ol as at 45' (Fig. 8).

Thus said bag structures 44 may be exteriorly depended as in Fig. 1', to provide patch-pockets access to which by lifting the flaps 43, thus to give the jacket a further close resemblance to an ordinary sports-wear jacket.

In reconverting. the new garment to the more formal coat of Figs. 8 and 9, this is quickly effected, and immediately following detachment of the panel- members 2l and 23, 28, transferring of the bag structures dd together with their naps (i3 through the already-mentioned openings e5, and causing the buttons d8 to disappear by slipping themfthrough the slits at theseams 3S, so that such a button will become disposed as indicated in Figs. 6 and 9 and as shown in dot and dash lines in Fig. 7.

While-I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of: my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications-coming within the scope of the invention asv denne-d in the appended. claims.

Having thus described. my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by United f States Letters Patent is;

1-. A garment of the coat type, comprisingv in combination with. aV main jacket structure, an auxiliary backA panel, a. pair of. auxiliary front panels, and. means partially carried by structure and partially carried by each of said panels for detachably securing said panels to said` structure at the exterior thereof, said means including depending substantially horizontally extending bands permanently inbuiltA into said structure, and snap fastenerscertain elements of which are carried by and behind said bands and cooperant elements of which are carried by said panels near their tops, said means further including a belt-member attached to and crossing and extending adjacent to the bottom of each panel, each of said belt-members having end portions projecting beyond opposite sides of its panel, and means partially carried by said structure and partially carried by said end portions for interengaging the latter and connecting them to said structure.

21A garment of the coat type, comprising in combination with a main jacket structure, an auxiliary back panel, a pair of auxiliary front panels, and means partially carried by said structure and partially carried by each of said panels for detachably securing said panels to said structure at the exterior thereof, said means including depending substantially horizontally extending bands permanently inbuilt into said structure, and snap fasteners certain elements of which are carried by and behind said bands and cooperant elements of which are carried by said panels near their tops, said means further including a belt-member attached to and crossu ing and extending adjacent to the bottom of each panel, each of said belt-members having end portions projecting beyond opposite sides of its panel, and means partially carried by said structure and partially carried by said end portions for interengaging the latter and connecting them to said structure, the means last-named incorporating buttonholes carried by said end portions and buttons carried by said structure.

A garment of the coat type, comprising in combination with a main jacket structure, an auxiliary back panel, a pair of auxiliary front panels, and means partially carried by said structure and partially carried by each ci said panels for detachably securing said panels to said structure at the exterior thereof, said means including depending substantially horizontally extending bands permanently inbuilt into said structure, and snap fasteners certain elements of which are carried by and behind said bands and cooperant elements of which are carried by said panels near their tops, said means further including a belt-member attached to and crossing and extending adjacent to the bottom of each panel, each of said belt-members having end portions projecting beyond opposite sides of its panel, and means partially carried by said structure and partially carried by said end portions for interengaging the latter and connecting them to said structure, the means last-named incorporating buttonholes carried by said end portions and buttons carried by said structure, said structure also including means for permanently at taching said buttons to said structure and further ineans so constructed and arranged that certain of said buttons may at will be exposed at the exterior ci said structure for coaction with said end portions as stated above or arranged to be concealingly disposed on said structure.

4. A garment of the coat type, comprising in combination with a main jacket structure, an

auxiliary back panel, a pair of auxiliary front panels, and means partially carried by said structure and partially carried by each of said panels for detachably securing said panels to said structure at the exterior thereof, said means including depending substantially horizontally extending bands permanently inbuilt into said structure, and snap fasteners certain elements of which are carried by and behind said bands and cooperant elements of which are carried by said panels near their tops, said means further including a belt-member attached to and crossing and extending adjacent to the bottom oi each panel, each of said belt-members having end portions projecting beyond opposite sides of its panel, and means partially carried by said structure and partially carried by said end pbrtions for interengaging the latter and connecting them to said structure, the means last-'named incorporating buttonholes carried by said end portions and buttons carried by said structure, said structure also including means for permanently attaching said buttons to said structure and further means so constructed and arranged that certain of said buttons may at will be exposed at the exterior of said structure for coaction with said end portions as stated above or arranged to be concealingly disposed on said structure, said structure having pockets at locations thereon always exposed regardless of whether said front panels are included in the garment, said pockets having bag structures so constructed and arranged that said pockets may at will be converted from the appearance of concealed pockets to the appearance of patch pockets and Vice versa.

5. A garment of the coat type, comprising a main jacket structure having a front opening, a back panel extended vertically along the back of the jacket structure, front panels extended vertically along the front of said jacket structure on opposite sides of said front opening', means releasably attaching the top edges of said panels to said jacket structure, belt-members mounted on the bottom ends of said panels with the ends of said belt members projected beyond the vertical side edges of said panels, means releasably attaching the ends of the belt-member of said back panel and the outer ends of the belt-members l01 said front panels together and to the sides of said jacket structure, and means releasably attaching the adjacent ends of the beltmembers of said front panels together and to the jacket structure at said front opening.
