The invention as described herein, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, consists of a mattress, an object of which is to provide a mattress which cannot sag through wearing down the resiliency of such springs which commonly bear the bulk of the weight of persons sleeping thereon.

A primary object of this invention is to provide a mattress which will not sag or give to an appreciable extent at any position thereof whereby a person with spinal trouble or any ailment which requires a non-sag sleeping surface may rest thereon in comfort.

Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan View of the mattress,

Figure 2 is a sectional view taken of the mattress and considerably enlarged, and

Figure 3 illustrates a modification of the invention.

In Figure 1 the mattress 25 is provided with a perfectly smooth outer top and bottom surfaces 26 in which there is no tufting or other indentation.

In Figure 2 the mattress 21 consists of a preformed padding 28, and the upper and lower sides 25 and 30 of the mattress cover are integrally connected at 3l by a connecting strip 32 whereby it may be opened up to insert or remove the rigid board or plate 33 from the pocket l5 formed by the fabric panels I6 and Il. The terminals 34 and 35 of the ends 35 and 31 of the mattress cover are turned out at right angles and provided with either button 38 or zipper connection to secure the said ends of the pad together.

In Figure 3 of the drawings is shown another modification and in the construction the mattress 39, fabric envelopes with pockets 40 and 4I are provided substantially the entire length and width of the mattress and open at one end thereof as at i2 and i3 whereby the rigid plates 44 and 45 may be inserted into or removed from the pockets as desired. These pockets are provided near the outer surfaces 46 and til of the mattress and the padding 48 in between these pockets may be of any desired thickness and of any required material.

We claim:

1. A mattress comprising an envelope having sides and upper and lower members, fabric arranged to form a pair of spaced open ended pockets in said envelope, padding disposed in said envelope and on both sides of each pocket, plates disposed in said pockets, and one of said sides having openings therein communicating with the open ends of said pockets for insertion and removal of said plates.

2. In a reversible mattress construction an envelope having upper and lower members and sides, one of said sides having a longitudinal slot intermediate the upper and lower members, means forming a pocket disposed in said envelope intermediate the upper and lower member and spaced from each, said pocket having an open end communicating with said slot, a plate disposed in said pocket, and padding disposed in said envelope on each said side of said pocket.
