Description
H. R. BEEBE May 29, 1951 DRINKING DOLL WITH CONTROLLED DISCHARGE OF THE LIQUID Filed May 20, 1949 Patented May 29, 1951 DRINKING DOLL WITH CONTROLLED DISCHARGE OF THE LIQUID Herbert R. Beebe, New York, N. Y., assignor to American Character Doll Company, New York,
Application May 20, 1949, Serial No. 94,309
Claims. (Cl. 46141) This invention relates to a drinking doll having controlled discharge of the liquid.
Drinking dolls have been constructed with a receptacle for receiving liquid fed through the mouth opening and with a small opening leading from the reservoir and opening through the body of the doll for discharge of the liquid. This construction has the disadvantage that the liquid flows from the doll as soon as the same is received in the receptacle. The present invention overcomes the aforesaid objection and disadvantage incident to the present type of drinking dolls by providing a discharge passageway which is controlled by the movement of one of the limbs of the doll and by which the liquid may be discharged as desired or stored within the body of the doll.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a doll of said character in which one of the limbs thereof is provided with a valve stem having a valve opening adapted to register with the discharge opening when the limb member is disposed in one position for permitting of the discharge of liquid from said receptacle, and the stem being moved to close said discharge outlet when the limb member is disposed in another position.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a drinking doll in which the stem connected with the limb member extends into the liquid receiving receptacle located within the body of the doll and which stem is movable to and from covering relation with the discharge outlet.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of means tensioning the inner end of the stem against the inner face of the receptacle to provide a liquid tight swivel connection.
With the foregoing and other objects in view,
reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal medial sectional view through a doll constructed in accordance with' the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken approximately on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar view taken approximately on line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken approximately on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the drinking doll includes a receptacle III which is located within the body I I of the doll and is adapted to receive liquid fed to the doll through the mouth opening I2 thereof. The liquid is conveyed to the receptacle I0 through a conduit I3 which is connected with the head at the mouth opening and extends downwardly through the upper end of the body II with the lower end of the. conduit protruding through the restricted lower end of a conical shaped member I l connected at its upper end with the receptacle I0 and adapted to prevent leakage of the liquid through the top of the receptacle. The receptacle I9 is provided with a conduit I5 integrally connected with the lower end thereof and connected with the body II so as to form a restricted discharge passageway I6 opening through the body II adjacent the leg members II.
In order to control the discharge of the liquid, a valve stem I8 is provided which is formed with a flared rim I9 having a small aperture 29 therethrough and which stem is rotatably mounted in an opening 2 I in the lower end of the receptacle III with the flared rim I9 disposed in engagement with a frusto-conical shaped seat 22 formed at the inner end of the opening 2|. The rim I9 slidably fits the seat 22 with the aperture 2 I? thereof being adapted to register with a transverse duct 23 opening through the seat and communicating at its outer end with the discharge passageway I6.
The opening 2| is provided in a downwardly and inwardly directed bottom wall portion 24 of the receptacle to thereby dispose the valve stem I8 in downwardly directed angular relation with the longitudinal axis of the receptacle and with the flattened lower end 25 thereof slidably engaging through an elongated slit 26 formed in and extending across the upper inner end of one of the leg members IT.
The leg members I! are fitted in circular openings 21 in the body II of the doll so as to swivelly connect the leg members therewith when the legs are moved from depending or in standing relation to right angular position or in seated relation to thereby rotate the valve stem I8 in the opening 2| to move the aperture 20 to and from registry with the duct 23. The aperture 20 is positioned in the rim I9 so that when the leg I! is in a depending position the discharge passageway I6 is closed so as to retain the liquid in the receptacle II] and when the leg is moved to right angular relation with the body, the passageway I6'is opened to permit of the discharge of the liquid from the receptacle.
A coil spring 28 disposed in surrounding relation with the valve stem I8 is tensioned between sageway opening through movement, a stem connected with said limb member for turning movement thereof with the movement of the limb member, said stem having an opening adapted to register with the discharge passageway when the limb member is disposed in one position for permi ting of the discharge of liquid from the compartment, and said st in being moved to dispose said opening out'of registry with the discharge passageway when the limb member is disposed in another position.
2. In a doll, a body having a com "tment for member conneo ed with sa.
of said compartment and cor limb member for movement the having an opening adapted. 10 re discharge passageway when the disposed in one position for or discharge of liquid from said stem being moved to out of registry with the when the limb member is disposed in another no sition.
3. In a doll, a body having a co containing liquid, said conipart inclined apertured wall prev outlet opening therethrough, a in member connected with body turning movement, a valve element mounted for rotation in the aperture in said inclined wail ard having a valve 5b disposed in downwardly directed l relation and connected with said 1 the discharge outlet ien the linb member is di. posed in one posi on for p. charge of liquid from the con. valve element ing moved the limb member .s disposed in another ooslnon. 4. In a doll, a body having a co gartment for containing liquid, said compartment having an inclined aperturcd Wall provided with a discharge outlet opening therethrough, a limb member connected with said body for turning movement, a valve element mounted for rotation in the aperture in said inclined wall and having a valve stem disposed in downwardly directed inclined relation and connected with said limb member for turning movement therewith, said valve element having an opening adapter to register with the discharge outlet when the limb member is disposed in one position for permitting of the discharge of liquid from the compartment and said valve element being moved to dispose said openout of registry with the discharge outlet when the limb member is disposed another position, and a spring surrounding said valve stem and engaging against the inclined wall of said compartn ent for tensioning the valve element for providing a liquid-tight connection in the aperture in clii' wall.
5. In a doll, a body 0 receptacle located. within so an. inclined receivin having a disi138? ured wall ing, a
1 for in the aperture in said in- Li having a downwardly directed aging said limb member for t therewith, said valve element ture adapted to register with h n the limb l ember is disposer. 11 one no r p 131' f the discharge of liquid -rcl the rece taclo and said dispose apervalve element be'ng moved t tore out registry with the discharge outlet prevent discharge 1i member is dispc-"ed osition, and s g means ehga g sa '1 valve stem tensioning said valve e re in said inclined wall.
