Description

June 1951 F. o. WICKERSHAM I PAPER CONTAINER FOR PASTRIES Filed Nov. 5, 1947 Patented June 12, 1951 UNITED :S PATENT ()FFICE PAPER GONTA-INERTOR PASTRIES Frederick). Wickersham, Chicago, Ill.
Application-November 3, 1947, Serial'No.'7-'83,665
fi Claims. :1 The invention relates to paper :con'tainersor cartons for fancy pastry.
One object of the invention is to provide a container for fancy pastry of the type which resembles a mushroom in contour and whichineludes a stem and a head which is usually coated with a frosting or. soft-cream. In handling and dispensing pastry of this type it is desirable to provide a container which supports :each article so that the coating will'not'be mar-red or the article will not be broken.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container or carton doraattractively :packaging pastry of the mushroom or similar type, which readily permits inspection -withoutremovalfrom the container or carton.
Other objects of the inventionwill-a'ppear from the detailed description.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective ofthe body of the container, illustrating :the -panels in their open position for inspection or removal of the pastry. Fig.2 is a perspective of the body with the panels folded into their closed position. Fig. .3 is a perspective of the cover. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the body with the cover thereon.
The invention is exemplified in a rectangular box-like body which "comprises fixed andfoldable side panels all formed of suitable paper such'as cardboard or similar lightweight sheet material, and which are adapted to be held closed by a telescopic cover. Thisbody comprisesa rectangular .base H3, and an upstanding'side panel H which forms a fixed side of the body and has a side-panel section l2 joined and extending at right angles thereto. 'Panel I and section I'Z have their lower edge fixedly secured-on base 110 and together formla fixed side and an adjoining side-section of the body which are fixedly secured .to the base. An-opposite side-panel i5 to one edge of panel I I. These flaps are adapted to extend between panels H and I5 :to form the side of the body opposite the side formed by panel sections .12 and I 3. The joints between panel-sectionl2 and .ti-andbetween flaps l6 and ['8 and panels H and I5.may be formed .by creas- Section I3 is foldablesso :it will :be..copla-nar ing or scoring the cardboard. 'When the side panel 1:3 with :section I2 and flaps lfi and -l 8 are folded to their closed position as illustrated :in Fig. 2, they form/alcornpletelrectangular closure at all sides of the :body above base 10 and when ffoldedlinito their (open position, asillustrated in Fig. .1, they provide free access to the interior of .thercontainerbody. I
lAzsplit or divided horizontal shelf .for supporting the pastryincludes a fixed section which is fixedly secured to panel H and side-section i2 and a section .26 which :isfixedlysecured tofold- .ablezside .panelJ 5 sandside section i i-and is fold-- able'therewith. Shelf section '25 is firmly supported on side-panel II by vertical SbraCkets 30 which-are formed of cardboard -and'secured to said panel and said shelf section-so that the latterwvill \be fixedly and horizontally supported relatively to. base l0. In like manner, shelf-sec- ,tion' lfi, is firmlysupported bybrackets 31 of cardboard which are seoured-toxthe inner faceof the foldable :side panel [5 land to said shelf section. 'S'helfsections 25and22fi, when thebody is folded to its -:.c1osed .position, are coplanar and mated to underlie andsupport the entire enlargedupper end .or head 2410f the pastry. These shelf sections are provided with semi-circular cut-aways '21, which provide a-circular opening'in the shelf for confining the upper portion of the stem 23 of the pastry when the panels-of the container body are in their closed position. An annulus or ring .22 is fixedly joined to the :top face of the central portion of base It for retaining the lower end of the stem 23 of the pastry against displacement. When the foldablel side vpanelsare in their open position, the shelf-sections will be separated to :permit the pastry to be placed in position in ring 221and with :a portion of the .head24 resting on shelf section 2.5. When the side panels are folded to their closed position, the shelf .and section :26 wil1 also underlie and support the head 2.4 of the :pastry. The base it is pressed to form .a rectangular shoulder 33 and is extended to provide a projecting rim ;34. The shoulder 33 serves as a stop for the lower margin of foldable panel [3 and flaps i6 and 18. A horizontal tongue or'fiap 38 is fixed to the lower margin of panel 15 and is adapted to pass through a slot 39 in-base Ill x verticallyintez'lock the cpane1-=L5 and the base, whensaid panel is in its .closed position.
A telescopic cow-er for the container body includes a top wall 36 andfour depending sides :31 fixedly joined to .saidtop. The bottom of the cover is open. The fixed sides 31 of :the cover extend to the base I and fit snugly around all sides of the body when the foldable panel side sections and flaps are in their closed position and hold them. The open bottom of the cover permits it to be slipped around the body and to be removed therefrom. The rim 34 on the base I0 projects laterally from the cover as an indication for preventing the container from being inadvertently inverted, and forms a stop at the lower end of the covei sides 3?.
In loading the container, the cover is removed and the foldable panel l5 and flaps l6 and 18 are swung into their open position as illustrated in Fig. 2. The pastry can then be readily deposited with its head 24 resting on shelf section 25 and the stem 23 extending into the annulus 22, so that the pastry will be supported in the body. The side-panel i5 and flaps it and i8 will then be folded to surround the pastry with the side-section l3 coplanar with the fixed section [2, the panel opposite to the side-panel II and the flaps l8 and 18 coplanar; as illustrated in Fig. 2. The pastry will then be supported in the body against displacement and without its coated head contacting the sides of the body. The cover 3? will then be telescoped around the sides of the body of the container with its sides conforming to the sides of the body so that all sides will be secured in their closed position. When it is desired to inspect the pastry before purchase, the cover will be removed and the foldable members i6 and is may be swung apart, or the foldable front section If: may be swung to its open position as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The invention exemplifies a cardboard container for fancy pastry of the mushroom type which can be readily loaded so that the coat ing thereon will be protected. against marring, and which is foldable to surround the pastry and encloses it in secured position.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details illustrated and described since these may be modified within the scope of the patent and claims without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
