, My invention relates to the storing and stacking of papers, such as old newspapers, magazines, circulars and the like, and to the preparation of such material for removaland disposal. It has lfor its principal obect to provide means for ordinary household use by which paper materialof the character designated may be accumulated and stored in orderly stacks and such stacks readily compressed and tied into bundles for convenient removal. My invention is particularly adapted for the stacking and bundling of out-dated newspapers which are of substantially uniform size, and it has been described in connection with such material. It is to .be understood, however, that the invention is useable in connection with magazines, pamphlets, circulars and' other more or less flat papers.

Many households today have aV considerable problem in the disposal of various cut-dated publications, particularly newspapers, which accumulate very rapidly. These take up considerable room, are heavy and inconvenient to handle in quantities, and frequently constitute a serious fire hazard. At the same time old paper of this nature has currently some technical value and is in demand for various commercial uses so that certain organizations collect it from householders for sale to dealers. .In general, it is the object of the present invention to provide simple and easy means for collecting and retaining such paper in stacks, as distinguished from the usual loose and scattered piles', and for quickly and easily tying such stacks into bundles of a size appropriate for expeditious handling by the members of volunteer collection organizations.

Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the drawings which form a part of this specification and in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing a device constructed in accordance with my invention, partly .broken away the better to show the construction thereof.

Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing my device with the cover member raised and showing a stack of newspapers or the like compressed and tied into a bundle.

Fig. 3 is a View in transverse vertical section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawing, at I is shown generally the stacking or bundling device of my invention, having vertically disposed side members II and end members I2 which are rigidly secured at their upper ends to a horizontal rectangular :frame I3 by any suitable means such as screws 4 Claims. There are two of the members II at each side of the device and two of the membersV I2 at each end thereof, these being so disposed that each of the members II has an outer edge adjacent to an outeredge of one of the members I2 to form -a corner member I6 of right angular section at each corner of the device to form a guide frame. The members II and I2 are preferably of varying width', being wider yat their lower ends than at their upper ends, so that adjacent edges of the members II at each side define a space or slot II which is wider atits upper end than at its lower end, and the adjacent edges of the members I2 at each end define similar spaces I8. These slots I1 and I8 are closed at their upper ends by the frame I3 and are open at their lower ends as shown.

' Each of the angular corner members I6 is provided at its lower end with a horizontally disposedledgeY member or abutment I9, which abutyments are preferablyof dimensions corresponding to the width of the associated members II Vand I2 at'the bottom. It will be noted that in this construction the opening or passage 22 communicates with the slots I8 at the ends of the device and that the passage 23 similarly communicates with the slots I1 at the sides thereof.

In use, the newspapers or similar material to be stacked is placed flat within the device so that the corners are embraced by the angular members I6 and is allowed to fall to the bottom to form a stack 24, resting upon the ledges I9. It will .be readily understood that the formation of the stack is guided by the members I6, the inner surface of which are preferably finished smooth so as to prevent sticking and jamming of the paper.

When a su'icient amount of paper has been thus accumulated and stored to form a bundle of a size convenient for handling, means is provided for easily compressing the stack into compact form and tying it into a tight bundle. For this purpose I provide suitable compression members, conveniently in the form of rods 26, which are adapted for placement on the top of the stack, either lengthwise as shown in Fig. 2 or crosswise as shown in Fig. 3, with the ends projecting through the slots I8 or I1 as the case may be. The inner edges of the vertical members I I and I2 are formed with inclined notches 21, which are horizontally aligned, which slope upwardly from the slot openings I1 and I8 and terminate in suitable seats 28 for the members 26.

With the stack so retained and compacted it may be readily tied into a bundle bypassing twine or other suitablei'tie 29 around it in both directions, the tie being. passed through the openingsvH-and I8 and the passages.22and23 as clearlyshown in Fig. 2. After the bundle has been thus tied, the compression members .2S-may be withdrawn endwise from :beneath the tie and the-bundle then liftedout ofthe device for disposal.

What I claim is:
