NETHER-GARMENT FOR BABIES Filed April 5. 1948 In Ven im' Norma, M Wu r6 Z'er Patented Dec. 18, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE NETHER GARMENT FOR BABIES Norma M. Wurster, Hobart, Ind.
Application April 5, 1948, Serial No. 19,137
Y:a claims. (c1. 12s- 284) This invention relates to undergarments for babies and an object of the invention is to provide a babys undergarment comprising a body part such as a shirt or the like and a nether part removably secured to said body part and adapted to serve as a diaper.
Another object of the invention is to provide an undergarment of the character indicated above, the nether part of which is adapted to be secured to the body part and to be closed in protecting position without the .use of safety or other pins.
A further object of the invention is to provide a babys undergarment of the character indicated above, the nether part of which is adapted to be used independently of the body part.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a babys undergarment of the character indicated above, the nether part of which is made from any suitable material arranged in two similar laminations and provided with a central pocket portion open on both ends and adapted to receive an absorbent inner panel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment of the character indicated above, adapted to be removed without disturbing the outer garments of the baby and without exposing the baby to sudden changes of temperature.
Other objects of the invention not specifically mentioned may appear in the following specification describing it with reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention. It is, however, to be understood that the invention is not to be limited or restricted to the exact construction and combination of parts described in the specification and shown in the drawing, but that such changes and modiiications can be made which fall within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawing, in the several figures of which similar parts are designated by similar reference characters and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational front view of the babys undergarment according to my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 and shown in a larger scale;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a view in plan of the nether part of the babys undergarment as herein embodied with its corner portions turned back;
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a view in top or end edge of the nether part.
The babys undergarment herein embodied comprises a body part S which may be a shirt, a vest or the like made from any preferred suitable material. In the embodiment shown in the drawing it is provided with shoulder straps I0 adapted to extend from the back to the front over the shoulders of a babyv and releasably secured to the front portion of the shirt by means of cooperating connecting means such as snaps I I, button and button holes or the like. The body part S of the garment extends downwardly approximately to the hips of the baby, and the top opening 'of said garment part is, after the shoulder straps I0 have been released from the front of the shirt, large enough to permit the removal of the body part S by pulling it down over the body oi the baby without the necessity of removing or disturbing the outer garments of the baby. Attention' is called to the fact that the shirt or body part S may be provided with sleeves and shoulder openings adapted to be closed by means of buttons and button holes or the like, instead of the shoulder straps I0 described above. Adjacent the lower edge of the body part S one part I2 of a pair of cooperating connecting means such as snaps, buttons and button holes is arranged on said garment part at the right and left side of the garment front.
The lower or nether garment part D as herein embodied comprises two overlying laminations I3 and I4 of any desired suitable material herein described as having their longitudinal margins connected but their end margins free. The overlying laminations I3 and I4 result from the weaving of an initially tubular body, which has been flattened. The overlying laminations I3 and I4 are herein shown as being substantially rectangular, it is however to be understood, that they may have any other suitable and desired outline. An inner pad or panel I5 of suitable absorbent material is inserted between the two overlying laminations and is arranged therein smoothly and is adapted to be removed therefrom easily and readily.
Adjacent each corner of the nether garment part D pleats I6 are arranged extending from the transverse edges of the nether garment part longitudinally with respect to said part. Adjacent one of the transverse edges of the nether garment part D a connecting means Il adapted to cooperate with the member I2 on the body part S is arranged adjacent the longitudinal edge of the nether garment part. Inwardly of each of these connecting means II and closely adjacent thereto a plurality of connecting means I8 similar to the member I2 is arranged on the nether garment part D. Adjacent the other transverse edge of the nether garment part a plurality of connecting members I9 similar to the member Il is secured to the nether garment portion D adjacent each longitudinal edge thereof.
When the body part S of the garment has been puton the body and is secured inpositionl by means of the shoulder straps IU andthe securing means II, the nether garment part D is attached thereto by engaging the connectingmembers I'2 on said body garment. part. vby the:
cooperating connecting members I'I on the nether garment part D, so that the latter hangs'fd'cwnfrom the body garment part in front-ofthe baby. Then the nether garment part Dis foldedv upwardly between the legsI of the baby .and the. corner portions of the portion of the nether garment. part nowf arranged inthevback. ofVl thebaby are folded over the corner portions ofsaid' gar.* ment part secured to' thezbody garment part. The connecting members I8 onthese cornerportions are engaged by the .connecting members I-19 on the. folded over portions. of. thenether garment.r
portion, which is. thereby securely arranged in protective position..

Itis to be' further. amlparticularlygpointed out, that pleats. I6 can be; let out as neededv forgsiae adjustment. 2. V'Ihegarment as defined in claim 1, with the said body of elongated tubular form and flattened to. provide. double front and back panels, said panels being secured together inwardly from and parallel. to the-longitudinalv lines of. fold of, the body, andrsaid absorbent pad-.is housed between the, panels and between the lines of securement. of the same to eachv other, said. pleats beingformed outwardly from the said lines of: secure.- ment of the panels.
