This invention relates to furniture and more especially to a table having a leg structure that is adjustable as to height.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel table having a leg structure that is adjustable to support the table top at different; elevations.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable `height table of novel construction whereby a table of conventional height may be adjusted to a lower height toiserve as a coiee table or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means in an adjustable height table directed to the leg Structure thereof whereby the table may Abe easily and quickly adjusted from oneposition to another of dilerent height. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a table structure having legs which are associated with a table top so as to be manipulated into different positions whereby the height of the table may be changed.
An additional object of the invention is to provide in an adjustable height table having a shiftable leg structure means for the restraining movement of the leg structures from any of the adjusted positions.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter set forth,` pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a table embodying my invention shown in adjusted position of conventional height.
Figure 2 is a view of the same shown in adjusted position of lower height or when used as a coffee table or the like.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 oi Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 partly in section showing the leg structure in the position Shown in Figure 2.
Figure 5 is an enlarged view in section, the section being taken along the line 5--5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 showing the leg structures in intermediate and adjusted positions.
Figure 7 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 1 1 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a portion of the table as seen in Figure 5.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I
" 1 Claim. (01.311-39) show a table having a top element or 'plate portion I Il preferably square in shape and `o f Iany suitable material, although the sample isI shown as being of wood. Side members I I are secured to and extend downwardly from the top element Ill and extending between a corner and the center A of the table top. A flat member I6 co-extensive with each member I5 is secured thereto as by screws I6a and a rabbet I 1 is formed by the L-shaped section of each member I5 together with the associated member I6. Units Il provide slide guide-ways for slidable blocks I B which have laterally extending tongues I9 which interiit in rabbets I1.
I show aplurality, four in number, of legs 20 which may be considered substantially C-shaped or L-shaped, each leg comprising a supporting end member 2I, a supporting central member or portion extending at right angles thereto and an end member or portion 23 which extends at right angles to portion 22 and parallel to end member 2I although the portion 23 may join portion 22 in a curve as shown, rather than a sharp angle.
A hinge 24 is secured as by screws 25 to the end of each leg member 2I and one of the slidable blocks I8 and a latch element 2B is provided in block I3 for each leg member 22, the latter having a recessed plate element 21 for cooperation with the respective latch 26 to restrain movement of the legs from the position Shown in Figures l, 3, 4, 5 and 8.
A similar latch device 28 is provided in the end of each leg portion 23 and a complementary latch plate therefor is Secured in each corner block I2 to restrain movement of the legs from the position shown in Figures 2 and 6. The legs 20 are shown as being generally rectangular in cross section and are chamfered as at 3| to permit the portions 2I and 22 respectively to assume an abutting position to provide the table with an invthe frictional engagement of slide blocks I8 with the slide guide units I 4.
The operation of the invention should be apparent from the foregoing description. The table which is shown in Figure 1 as being of conventional height may be adjusted by shifting the leg structures to the position as shown in Figure 2 in a simple manner. The table is irst tippedrso that the top element I0 is inclined or placed in a substantially vertical position and the legs 2U are disengaged from latches 26 by rotative movement and a shitingof reach `slide Iblock |'8 :from its position'adjacent.a'b1ock l2 towardthecenter block I3. The end member 23 at the end of the rotative movement is moved to a position adjacent the top I0 and the related b1ock-;;I2;-1a-tch -28 ',be- Y ing engaged with latch plate 29 whereupon the table assumes the position shown in Figur-e2:

4 practical and preferred embodiment, it is recognized that departures may be made therefrom Within the scope of my invention, which is not to be limited to the details disclosed herein but is to be accorded the full scope of the claim so as toV embrace any and all equivalent devices.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
