Description

Feb. 5, 1952 AN 2,584,721
CASE WITH SPRING-URGED PIVOTED SLIDING CLOSURE Filed Sept. 15, 1946' FIG. 2
grwe/wtm RICHARD LINNEMAN Patented Feb. 5, 1952 UNITED "STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CASE WITH SPRING-URGED PIVOTED SLIDING CLOSURE Richard Linneman, Atlanta, Ga. Application September 13, 1946; Serial No. 696,890
3 Claims. (01. zen-cs) The inventionrelates to cases and has as an object the provision of a case for holding articles to be readily available for removal.
It is an object of the invention to provide a case which will hold articles in covered condition and provided with a cover that opens and closes upon reciprocatory movement.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a case of the character referred to that can be readily produced of molded plastic.
Further objects will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention and wherein Figure 1 is an end elevation;
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Fig. 3 is a detail section similar to Fig. 2, upon an enlarged scale.
As shown, the device is adapted to storage of twist drills and is adapted to receive a plurality of drills of different sizes which drills may readily be seen through the plastic of the case to note their presence or absence.
In the form shown, the device comprises a block III of plastic formed with grooves I I and I2 in the ends, the grooves II and I2 terminating upwardly in grooves I3 and I4 which are more shallow but of the same width.
As shown, the block I is formed with a plurality of wells I5 for reception of articles to be stored. A cover for the device is shown as formed of two similar halves I6 and I1, each half comprising vertical end members I8 and I9 which are arched at their upper portions as at 20, 2| and the cover also comprises side members 22, 23 adhered or cast integral with the end members. The end members I9 of the cover are shown as each formed with a semi-circular ear 24 having its face flush with the surface of the end member I9 and which ear seats in a semi-circular recess 25 in the meeting end member I8. The end members I8 are also formed each with a semi-circular car 24' lapping with the ears 24 and projecting into recesses 25 in members I9. To pivot the two portions of the cover to each other through the medium of the cars 24, 24' there are shown pins 26 seating in openings in the ears and each Y formed with an enlarged head 21 traveling in the grooves I I and I2 during vertical sliding movements of the cover. To urge the cover to the closed position there are shown springs 28 turned about the pins 26 and having their outturned ends anchored in the material of the end members I 8 and I9 as indicated at 29, 30. The turns of the spring 28 about the pins 26 act to provide resilient pressure of the enlarged head 2'! toward the bottom of the groove. To disassemble the dev vice when the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 an instrument is inserted under each of the heads 21 and the pins 26 are forced outwardly until the heads 21 can enter the shallow grooves I3 and I4 when the cover may be readily removed from the base block. The end members I8 and I9 are shown as provided with inward thickening portions 3 I 32 which as shown are substantially triangular in form. The lower corners of these thickening portions coact with cam surfaces 33, 34 when the cover is forced downwardly which cam surfaces cause a spreading of the two halves of the cover against the pressure of the springs 28 whereby during the early part of the downward motion the covers are forced to the dotted line position shown in Figure 1 and thereby the cover need be forced downward no farther than it is necessary to grasp the end of a wanted article projecting above the upper surface of the body I0. When the cover is slid upwardly it automatically returns to closed position by action of the springs 28. To permit grasp by the finger of the user to cause reciprocable movements of the cover the same are shown as formed with ribs 35, 36.
It is obvious that the case may be adapted to the holding of slender objects of any character desired as for instance cigarettes, soft drink straws, tools or the like.
Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiment of the invention within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A covered case for articles comprising, in combination: a body of rectangular cross-section presenting top and bottom surfaces and end surfaces extending therebetween; an article receiving space enclosed by said body and opening at the top surface thereof; said end surfaces formed with vertical grooves parallel with their side margins; a pair of cover members each formed with ears to overlap the ears of the other; pivot pins pivotally uniting said ears and formed with heads projecting into said groovesfor sliding movement therein; spring means coiled about said pins urging said cover members toward each other to a closed position over. said open edge; and coactin cam means carried by said body and by the respective cover members acting to spread said members when the pins are moved in said grooves away from said open edge.
2. The combination of claim 1 with said spring means coiled about said .pins and being anchored against the respective cover members beyond said pins, the coils of said springs pressing said heads toward the bottoms of the respective grooves.
3. A covered case for articles comprising, in combination: a flattened body of rectangular cross-sectionopresenting top and. bottom surfaces and ends extending therebetweeng with verticall grooves formed in said ends substantially parai- 1 lel with the side margins thereof; said grooves being of reduced depth adjacent said top surface s to provide a stop shoulder in thebottom ofrieach groove adjacent its upper end; a pin havirigaam:- enlarged head slidable in each groove .to a stop 15 against said shoulder; an article receiving space formed in said body and opening atfthenppetz edge thereof; a pair of' cover members for said opening each pivoted onseach pin to close into" mutual contact over said opening; coacting cam 2 surfac'esion said 'coven-membersand ,hdyjactingw to separate said cover membersac-whenzsaidwipin heads 'are moved :in' said grooves --:away fromis'aidi shoulders; and spring means urging said cover REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent: I
