Patented Feb. I2, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FABRIC STRIP AND HOLDER THEREFOR Alfred B. Wester, Jr., Woodbury, N. J.
Application September 10, 1948, SerialNo. 48,587
12 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cleaning devices and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved sanitary cleaner for teeth and which is applicable for polishing shoes, silverware, .fibrous material and the like in a convenient and highly satisfactory manner.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a cleaner including a support having a pair of spaced walls, a strip of cleaning material trained over one of the walls and embodying novel and improved means for clamping the material t the other of said walls and relatively tight against the rst mentioned wall.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a tooth cleaner including a support about which there is trained a strip of flexible cleaning material, means for clamping the material to the support when the same is in use, and novel and improved means for releasing said clamping means so that a new and clean portion of the material will be in position for use and means whereby the used portion of the strip may be removed. A further object of the present invention is to provide a cleaner of the aforementionedcharacter that is small and compact in structure and which includes in its construction a group of separable elements which are quickly and readily assembled or disassembled facilitating a cleaning of the same in a convenient manner.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a tooth cleaner that is simple and practical in construction, strong andl reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details. of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings form'- ing` part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to' like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of one embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a group perspective View of Figure Figure 4 is a transverse vertical sectional View taken substantially on the plane of section line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, Wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral IIl representsa hollow substantially annular housing forming a hand grip and including an outwardly projecting hollow extension I2 that terminates in a support I4.
One side of the housing IIJ is provided with an entrance opening I6 and an arcuate recess I8 is provided in the outer periphery of the housing I!) adjacent the opening I6.
A closure 20 is provided with an annular recess 22 in its inner face that receives the outer edge 24 of the housing I0, at the open side thereof, and the closure 20 is provided with an arcuate iianged portion 26 that is slidably and frictionally fitted in the recess I8 for retaining the closure in position to the housing I0 in order to close the opening I6.
An annular member or ring 2 8 is fixed to the closed side of the housing IIJ and is spaced from the inner annular surface of the housing I0. This member 28 forms a support about which there is trained a length or strip of flexible cleaningmaterial or cloth 30.
The outer portion of the extension I2 or outer extremity of the housing I0 is provided with an opening 32 that is positioned between the upper Wall of the extension I2 and the lower wall 34 of the support I4.
Integrally formed with the side wall 36 of The numeral 42 represents the clamping mechanism that is used in conjunction with the present invention generally and which includes a substantially rectangular pressure plate 44 that is loosely positioned between the walls 34 and 38.
Spaced parallel end blocks 46 and 48 are integrally formed with the upper surface of thev plate 44 and include outwardly inclined outer surfaces 50 and 52, and transverse slots 54 and 56 are provided in the plate 44 adjacent the blocks 46 and 48.
The upper upstanding end portions of the bottom wall are recessed on both longitudinal sides and lugs or pivot pins 58 project outwardly from these recesses and engage notches 60 provided in the free ends of a plurality of links 62 which are pvotally secured to the ends of the blocks 46 and 48, for pivotal movement of the plate 44 relative to the lower or bottom wall 34.
The upper outer edge of the block 48 is sharpened to provide a, means for tearing the material 30.
In practical use of the present invention, thus illustrated in Figures 1-4 inclusive, the free end portion 12 of the material 3D extends through the opening 54 in the plate 44over. thebumper: plate 38, downwardly through the opening 56 in the plate 44, and upwardly about the block 48, as shown in Figures 1 and 3, the blocks 46 and 48-1 being raised to their dotted line position as show-n in Figure 3'. Aslthe plate` 44` is forced. downwardly, the block 46 seals the opening32 and the plate 44 clamps the material 3'between the platef44 and the bottomwall 34, and the recesses 66 'receive the protuberances16'4. to lock theplate in this position.
It istobe understood; however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is-l susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by thespirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
