A TTORNE Y6 Patented May 27, 1952 TENT OFFICE CONVERTIBLE GARMENT Kate Rebecca Strauss, Bronx, N. Y., assignor to Famous Bathrobe 00., Inc., New York, N. Y., a
l corporation of New York Application July 7, 1950, Serial No. 172,604
The present invention relates generally to an article of apparel, and in particular it relates to an article of outer apparel. While the present invention is not to be so limited, the article of apparel described and claimed hereinafter is well adapted for use as a childs sleeping garment.
It is often desirable or necessary to change an infants or chilcls garment from one of the sack or bunting type to one of legged type which would permit full and free movement of the wearers legs while covering and protecting the legs. For example, while the infant is sleeping, a covering garment of the sack or bunting type is preferable. When the infant or child is to be permitted movement, as walking or toddling, however, the sack garment is obviously undesirable, and a change becomes necessary.
To effect such a change is generally inconvenient, and cannot usually be accomplished in close quarters without difficulty. Thus, while the child is in a carriage outdoors, such a change must generally be dispensed with to the discomfort of the child. Where more space is available, the child may be changed from one garment to the other, but this change is attended by the usual difficulties encountered in undressing and dressing children, besides requiring a plurality of garments.
It is, therefore, a principal object of the present invention to provide an improved article of apparel.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved outer garment well adapted for infants or children.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide an improved infants or childs outer garment which may be converted simply from one of the sack or bunting variety to one provided with leg portions.
A'further object of the present invention is the provision of an outer garment for infants or children which garment may be converted easily and quickly from one of the sleeping bag type to one provided with leg portions, without requiring the removing of the garment from the body of the wearer.
Still a further object of the present invention is the provision of an improved outer garment for infants or children, which garment may be easily converted from a sleeping bag to a legged garment, and reconverted from a legged garment to a sleeping bag, and is of simple and durable construction and operation.
Other and further objects of the present in- 3 Claims. (Cl. 269.5)
vention will become apparent from a reading of the following description, together with the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of one form of garment constructed according to and embodying the present invention arranged in sack or bunting form;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof, converted to a legged garment;
Figure 3 is a sectional view along line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view along line l-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary front detailed view of the lower portion of the garment in the form illustrated in Figure l and in partially open condition;
Figure 8 is a similar rear view thereof;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary front detailed view of the improved garment in the form illustrated in Figure 2 and in partially open condition; and
Figure 8 is a similar rear view thereof.
The present invention broadly contemplates the provision of a garment having a body encircling portion and a pair of depending members provided with separable fasteners along their inner edges whereby the opposite edges of each of the members may be separably joined or fastened to form leg portions and a common crotch portion, or whereby the corresponding edges of both of these members may be separably fastened to each other to convert the garment to one of the sack or bunting type.
Reference is now made to the drawings wherein It designates the upper or body encircling portion of the improved garment, and H the lower or leg portion thereof. The upper portion it is provided with a pair of sleeves I2 constructed in any well known manner, and which sleeves include cuifs l3 formed at their outer ends. The upper central part of the body encircling portion!!! is also provided with a neck opening it surrounded by a suitable collar as It.
The front of the improved garment, as seen in Figure l, is provided with a slit 1 1 extending vertically from the neck opening it to the crotch point It of the garment. The opposite edges of the slit H are provided with suitable engageably separable fasteners such as slide fasteners it which are joined at their lower end or at the crotch point it by anchor clip 20. The collar It has extending from one side thereof a flap 2! provided with suitable means for fastening its in the position shown hides a slide member (not 3 shown) which cooperates with the slide fasteners 9 for opening or closing the slit ll.
The lower or leg covering portion H of th improved garment comprises a pair of leg members 21 and 22 depending from the lower part of the body portion [0, each having their outer edges joined or integrally formed and lower edges 2 either directly joinedor connected by a' suit able panel or gore sewn therebetween. Furthermorea slit is formed along the inner portions of the leg members which extends continuously from a point 26 on the lower inner edge of leg memberZi upwardly to a point in proximity to crotch point it, and thence downwardly to apoint 21. at the lower inner edge of leg memberZZ, the upper limit of said slit being closely adjacent and below the ter minus of the slit I1 and the anchor clipjilat the front of the garment. The leg member 2! is thus provided with a front inner edge 29 and rear inner edge 30, and the leg, member 22 is provided with corresponding front inneryedgei32 and rear inner edge-33.
There is attached by stitches or the like, and by way of suitable stringers 34, slidefastenersfifigdil, 42-and:43fo the respective inneredges-EQ, 32, 3 and 33- ofthe leg membersi2l and-22. The slide fasteners 39 and 42 extend from pointsslightly spaced'frorn the lower edgesiz iofgthe corresponding leg member upwardly and in close proximity to theclip Zll. and the slide fastenersifand is extend from points likewise spaced slightlyfrom thelower edges 24 to a point on the rear of the garment to a point on a level with the clip 2d, and are there terminated. Furthermore, the
lowentermini of-the-slide fastenersfifi and is, are 1- provided with female coupling members s and 41, and the lower termini of the slide fasteners 45] and 42 are provided with the male coupling membersdfi and lB. liioreover,:.a slide ii! is slid- ;ablymounted on the slidablefastener 39, and a slide 5i! isslidably mounted D theslidable fastener 43.
"The application and employment of the .improvernentgarment is apparent from the above description and the drawings. Thus, when it is the garmentintooneof thesack or bunting type.
When-it is desired :toconvert the sack or bunting'to a legged garment, as illustrated in Figures 2,4, -7 and 8 of the drawings, the slide fasteners ia -audit ar brought to the lowermost position andthe:couplingmembersaifi, 48,:4-1 andls separated. Thereaftenthemembers ".45 and '48 are coupled togethenas are :the members 41 and 48.
The slides are-then broughtto their upper position to jointhe slidable fasteners stand 8 and to join the slidable fasteners A2 and 43. These operations change the garment into one of the legged variety.
I .is apparent that the p s nt inv n o pro- -:vides.an imp v d arme t of simp e c struction. on wh h pan :b :si rln r conve t d om a bunting or seek to a legged garment, or vice versa,;fro rn aJeggedgarmentto a-sack or bunting. ,The garment may be made of any suitable :a preferredembodiment of the; present invention; it'is obvious that numerous alterations and omissions may be made without departing from the spirit thereof.
.I-Iaving described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
