GOLF BAG DIVIDER Filed Dec. 29, 1948 mm 1 7" N f g!!! l i V- I I Z 8 t 9 K 011K150 Vine INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
Patented Aug. 19, 1952 Charles K. lie-Vine, Spi'valn Cclo, assignor to I CluBBOy,Inc., acorporation of Colorado Application December 29, 1948, Serial No. 67,870
signed for use in the open endsof golf bags, the primary object of the invention being to provide a device which will divide the golf bag into a series of golf club openings, whereby the golf clubs placed within the golf bag, will be separated from each other so that the player will have ready access thereto and may readily select the desired club for a particular shot.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily positioned within the mouth of a golf bag and secured thereto in such a way that it will not be withdrawn from the bag when the clubs are being removed therefrom.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a divider'which may be supplied with an adapting collar whereby the device may be used in bags of various diameters.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a divider having its sides scalloped for positioning within an adapting collar having a correspondingly formed inner edge so that the divider will fit snugly therein and be held against movement with respect thereto.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a sectional view through the mouth of a golf bag, illustrating a divider, constructed in accordance with the invention, as mounted within the mouth of the golf bag.
Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the divider showing the adapter ring as positioned therearound.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates a golf bag which is formed with the customary oval-shaped mouth,
in which golf clubs are carried, in playing golf. 7
The divider forming the subject matter of the present invention, comprises a body portion 6 which may be constructed of leather, rubber, metal, or other suitable material, the body por- This invention relatesto an attachment de- 1 Claim. (01. 150-- 1.5)"
tion being so 'shaped'thati't will snugly fit within the 'mouth of the bag for which it' has been designed.
As shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing, the body portion is substantially thick and has its outer surface scalloped to securely hold it in position against the inner surface of the bag mouth.
This body portion is also formed with 9. marginal flange l which is of a width to overlie the upper edge of the mouth of the bag, as shown by Fig. 1 and provide a close fit therebetween. Openings are formed in opposite sides of the body portion, which openings accommodate the screws 8 which are extended through openings in the golf bag and pass into the threaded openings of the divider, securing the divider in the mouth of the golf bag.
One end of the divider is cut away as at 9 providing a space for the carrying strap H) which forms a part of the usual golf bag.
The divider is provided with a plurality of openings II, which openings are arranged for the reception of the various clubs carried in the bag and used in playing the game of golf. These openings may be numbered from 1 to 9 consecutively, to correspond with the numbers of the golf clubs positioned therein. In this way, it will be obvious that the person using the golf bag supplied with a divider constructed in accordance with the invention, may readily select the desired club for a particular shot. It will also be noted that the clubs lwhen positioned in the openings, will be held against engagement or contact with each other to damage the club or wrappings of the clubs.
Since it may be desirable to use a divider such as described, with a golf bag having an exceptionally large mouth, an adapter ring such as indicated by the reference character I2 is used, the adapter ring being provided with a scalloped inner surface conforming to the scalloped shape of the outer surface of the divider, so that they fit snugly, the divider being held against movement with respect to the adapter ring. When an adapter ring is used, the screws 8 are extended through openings formed in the ring, which openings align with the openings of the divider. It is to be understood however that it may not be desirable to divide the openings in the golf bag, in which case, the adapter ring and divider may be so constructed that a close fit is provided between the adapter ring and divider when they are positioned in the mouth of the golf bag.
In the present showing, the openings in which the wooden clubs, and a group of openings for clubs numbered 1 to 9 and a group of two openings for putters.
It is also to be understood that suitable cut out portions may be providedin: the bottom or;
the body portion to accommodate the usual straps" that are positioned across the mouth of a golf bag to divide the mouth of the golf bag to partiltion the clubs from each other, to preventethe clubs from becoming dented or scratched while being carried. 7
Having thus described the invention, what-is claimed is:
A device for separating golf clubs carried'in a golf bag, comprising a body portion having 1a scalloped outer surface, an adapter ring shaped to conform to the shape-ofthe mouth of the: golf bag and havin'g' a scalloped inner surface conforming to the shape of the body portion, the
