SHOWER Filed NOV. 14, 1949 In ue ztar Flora L Tau/man min away EM Patented Sept. 2, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I .I T 2,609,232 I V SHOWER 1 Flora L. .Tauhnan, Long Beach, Calif. Application November 14, 1949, Serial No. 126,977
This invention relates to a shower head and more particularly to a shower head having a dispensing attachment associated therewith.
The primary object of this invention is to enable a person taking a shower to dispense perfume, toilet water or the like alongwith the water sprayed from a shower head.
Another important object of this invention is to provide an attachment capable of realizing the foregoing object which may be'readily attached to conventional shower outlets, and from which the flow of material being dispensed may be readily controlled.
Another important object of this invention is to provide an attachment of this character in which thesupply of material being dispensed may be readily'asc'ertained visually.
Another important object of this invention is to provide an attachment of this character which maybe readily incorporated with conventional shower'outlets and which may be utilizedto dispense two or more separate and distinct materials into the shower stream either simultaneously or separately and in controlled amounts as desired. Another object'of this invention is to provide a device of this character which will be eflicacious in operationand which will present a pleasing appearance while being durable and efiicient for the purposes intended.
A meritorious feature ofthe present invention resides in the introduction of the material bein dispensed into the shower head proper, whereby maximum mixing efiect is attained, yet which minimizes coagulation and corrosion of the plumbing since the material remains in the shower head a very short time should the nature of the material being dispensed and the tap water beof such a nature as so cause an interaction tending to produce this undesirable but unavoidable result upon mixing. 7 7
Another important feature of this invention resides in the saddle and means for attaching the receptacles to the water pipe together with the downward inclination of the water pipe which permits gravity flow of thefiuid from the receptaclesl q p H 3 Another important feature oi -the present invention resides in the receptacles provided whereby the supply of material contained therein may be ascertained visually.
A final feature to be specifically enumerated herein resides in the valve means provided for controlling the flow of material from the receptacles.
These together with various ancillary features 3- Claims; Cl. 299-84) and objects of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the present invention, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a suitable embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken upon the plane of the section line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken upon the plane of the section lines 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of the top of one of the receptacles.
Reference is now made more specifically to the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, and in which the numeral l0 indicates a water pipe-generally, which includes a horizontal portion I2 and a downwardly inclined portion l4 connected by a 45 degree L. The lower end of the portion I4 being suitably secured, as at 18, to the dome 2!] of a shower head 22. A saddle 24 is secured to the pipe I2 by means of a clamp 26. Blocks 28 are secured at the outer ends of the saddle 24 each of which is provided with an L-shaped passage 30. Receptacles 32 and 34 are supported on the blocks 28, which are of identical construction, and a description of one as shown in Fig. 2 will suffice for both. The receptacle 34 includes a base 36 and a cover 38 andv a transparentcylinder 40. The base 36 and the cover 38 are provided with annular ribs 42 which embrace the lower and upper rims of the cylinder respectivelyand studs 44 are provided which extend thru the marginal edges of the base 36 and the cover 38 for retaining the cylinder 40 therebetween, sealing rings 46 being provided to prevent leakage from a cyla inder 40. c
The base 36 is provided with a threaded boss 38 which is threadingly received in a connector 50, the connector 50 being in turn threadingly receivedin a socket 52 in the block 28. An opening 54 is provided thru the base 36 which communicates thru a bore 56 in the connectorfifl with the passage 30. h r
A needle valve 58 extends into the opening 54 and is attached to a valve stem 60 which extends thru the cover 38. The valve stem 66 carries a valve member 62 adjacent the needle valve 58 which seats against the base 36, and a compression spring 64 embraces the valve stem 60 and is seated between the cover 38 and the valve member 62 for urging the same into the closing position. The upper end of the valve stem 69 is threaded and. a valve control handle 66 is secured thereto by means of an adjustment nut 58. As best shown in Fig. 4, the valve control handle 66 is bifurcated to provide legs 10 which are pivotally secured adjacent their ends to a collar 12 as at 14. It will be readily understood that the valve control handle 66 maybe raised, thereby lifting the valve stem 60 to control the flow of material from the receptacle 34 thru the passage 30. The cover 38 is in addition provided a fill plug 76 for replenishing the contents of the receptacle 34.
Conduits l8 and 80 communicate between the passages 30 and the interior 82 of the shower head 22. Although metallic conduits will suflice flexible conduits have been illustrated in the drawings which are connected to the blocks 28 by means of nipples 84 and caps 86, while the other end of the conduits are securedto nipples 88 by caps 90. The nipples 88 being threadingly received in adaptors 92 suitably secured to the dome 20.
The use of the attachment will be readily understood. The receptacles 32 and 34 are supplied with suitable perfumes or toilet waters, or perhaps one of the same may be filled with liquid soap or a water softening agent if so desired. The operation of the shower head being otherwise normal with respect to the use of the water, however, as will be readily understood various liquid agents may be dispensed along with the water as desired.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not desired to' limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to; falling within the scope of the appended claims.
