UNITED STATESv PATENT OFFICE.
HERSOHEL V. FLIOKINGER, OF BUCYRUS, OHIO.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,961, dated July 11, 1882.
Application tiled May 8, 1862. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERscHEL V. FLICK- INGER, of Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved fence-post detached from the socket. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, sho-wing the post and socket set in the ground; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
Uorresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to fence-posts; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the base or socket, which consists of a cylindrical shell closed at its lower end, and made of burned clay, cement, or other suitable material.
B is the post, which consists of a rod or bar of iron, bent or L-shaped at its lower end, as shown, and provided at suitable intervals with notches G to aord hold for the fence-wires or the fastenings for the same. The post B is set in the socket A and secured by a packing, D, composedof coarse gravel and coal-tar. The lower bent or L-shaped end of the post serves to bind and hold it securely in position. The socket or base A is set in an auger-holein the ground, which is then packed firmly around said base. This may be donc either before or al'tcr the post has been set in the base.
My improved fence-post is simple, inexpensive, and durable, and the method of settingit in the base with a packing impervious to water makes it impossible for it to be washed out by heavy rains or freshets.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United StatesrIhe combination of the base or socket consisting of a cylindrical shell closed at its lower end, the fence-post consisting ofa metallic rod bent or L-shaped at its lower end, and apacking of course gravel and coal-tar, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
HERSCHEL V. FLIOKINGER.
