F. M. ELLIOTT.
DRAG SAW.
Patented July 18, 1882.
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFICE.
FRANCIS M. ELLIOTT, OF SUMMUM, ILLINOIS.
DRAG-SAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,322, dated July 18, 1882.
Application filed April 21, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FnANcIs M. ELLIOTT, of Summum,in the countyof Fulton and State of Illinois. have invented a new and Improved Sawing-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvementin hand-power machines for Working crosscutsaws for sawing wood; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, which represents myimproved sawingmachine in perspective view.
A represents a couple of posts placed side by side on a bed-sill,B, and carryinga toothed I and crank-handled driving-wheel, Q, a suitable distance above the ground to be conveniently worked by an operator standing on the ground by the posts. 7
C is a beam projecting from a cross-piece, D, connecting said postsAbelow the drivinggear, said beam extending as far away from the posts as the log E to be sawed will lie, and having a dog, F, at the extremity for being driven into the log for holding it. The beam is thus to be supported on the log, and it is to furnish the support for the saw G and its connecting-rod H, and also the working-lever I. The said working-leverI is pivoted to the beam 0 at J, Where said lever is arranged in a slot, K, formed by notching said beam, and a cap, L, attached to the side of the beam. The lever is connected by rod M with the cranks N of a shaft, 0, geared by pinion P with the driving-wheel Q, and carrying a balance wheel, R, to regulate the motion of the saw.
U is a guide-bar, in which the lever I works below the beam, to prevent lateral vibration.
The working-lever I is-contrived for varying the stroke of the saw and the leverage of the power by the two series of holes S for the pi votpins T, so that the machine can be readily adapted for different kinds and sizes of logs to be sawed, and also enabling the stroke to be lengthened or shortened to suit the requirements of persons of diiferent capacities for operating the machine. By this facility for adjusting the machine for the requirements of different persons and different conditions of timber the said machine is rendered more convenient and useful than others.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the uprightsA A and the beam 0, secured toand between them at one end, while its other end has a pin, F, to hold the log, said beam having also a slot, K, at about the middle, of the centrally-pivoted leverI, having adj usting-apertures in each end, saw G H, lever M, and crank-shaft O and operating mechanism, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
FRANCIS M. ELLIOTT. Witnesses:
L. L. WAKEFIELD, J osEPH ELLIOTT.
