Description

'v www N,FE`TERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOE.
HARRISON DOTY, OF CARDINGTON, OHIO.
APPARATUS FOR SUPPLYING SAWDUST TO FURNACES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,169, dated November 22, 1859.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON Do'rr, of Oardington, in the county of Morrow and State of Ohio, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Supplying Furnaces in Steam-Sawmills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in arranging the several parts of this machine substantially in the manner hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing' Figure l is a perspective of the bottom of the machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
In the figures A represents a box of anyT suitable size which is placed under the saw gate, so as to catch any sawdust, bark, or other falling material in asaw mill.
B represents an adjustable bottom which is hinged to the box at ai@ This bottom is provided with a frame B, which extends beyond the box as is represented in the figures, and to this frame is secured a rod O, which is provided with a weight d. Extending out from and on a line wit-h the bottom of the box is a support E, which has a. standard F, erected on its outer end, said standard being provided with a pin near its top and with two staples 2', z', on its side as shown.
D, represents an adjustable or movable catch which is provided with a V shaped slot fu, through which the pin c, of the standard F, passes. The lower end of the catch D, is secured to the standard by means of the staples z', z', in such a manner that said catch can move up and down when necessary. Se-
cured to the catch D is a rod c, which is provided with a weight a, which has a tendency to draw the catch down.
In using' this invention the box being placed under the sawgate, of a saw mill the sawdust and bark from the timber falls, when the mill is in operation into the said box on to the bottom B. IVhen a suiicient quantity of this fuel is collected upon said bottom, the frame B which is held down by means of the catch D, as seen in Fig. 1, serves to raise said catch. which is guided by the pin c, in the V slot the catch rising moves back from the frame at thc same time freeing it, so that the bottom will turn upon its hinge and allow the fuel to fall into thc furnace or into a channel leading to the furnace. The weight d, may be moved on the rod C, toward its outer or inner end as circumstances may require so that the bottom will empty with more or less material in it. The weight a keeps the catch D down. except when it is raised by the frame B.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. In combination with the hinged bot-- tom B, I claim the employment of the latch D, when the same is constructed and arranged to operate substantially as in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. I also claim the arrangement of the hinged bottom B provided with the adjustable weight CZ-wit-h the latch D provided with adjustable weight a, and with the stationary box A, for the purpose setforth.
HARRISON DOTY.
