It should be noted that the bridge portion I4 is forwardly offset relative to the depending arms 18,- thereby tending. toswing the-- arms I8 outwardly and -rearwardlywithin thenotches l-I as the? upper end of the actuating- 1ever'2-3- lspressed inwardly toward the handle I]. At the retaining position. The bowed formation of the tines l9 will hold the pad P from accidental displacement after being mounted in position. The points 20 by being inclined toward the base 10 will be shielded and will thereby be held out of engagement with a surface which is being cleaned or scoured.

If desired, the holder may be utilized for supporting various types of scouring pads or elements. As shown in Figure 5, the holder H may be used for supporting or carrying a woven copper pad such as the well-known Chore Girl cleanerC, a prong member i2 being used to attach the pad C to the holder H. 7

As shown in Figure 6, the holder H may be used to supportor carry a steel wool soap pad S. Since the pad S is generally small, a specially designed handle 28 may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention. A prong member 29 similar to the prong member I2 is used to attach the pad S to the holder H.

The handle l5. constitutes an abutment to brace the pron member against strain in one direction by engagement with the bridge portion I4. The arms l8 by fitting into the .notches 21 will brace the prong member against lateral strain, and the points of the tines by. fitting in the sockets, 28 will be braced at their outer extremities.

It should be noted that a device constructed as above set forth may be used for scouring floors, kitchen utensils, as well as any other article or surface. Furthermore, the holder will shield the hand while it is being used by providing a handgrip above the pad, thereby, preventing injury to the hand and knuckles of the user while the device is in use. It will be noted by considering Figures l and 2 that the pad may be quickly removed or replaced when desired, by simply pressing the lever 23 toward the handle II and slipping the pad P from the tines l9. After the pad P has been placed upon the tines l9 and the lever 23 is released by the operator, the spring 25 will swin the lever away from the handle II and cause the tines [9 to clamp the pad P flat against the bottom face of the base It). The forms shown in Figures and 6 will operate in a similar manner.

It should be noted that certain detail changes in the mechanical structure may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, so long as such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims. The present device may be of any desired shape to conveniently support and correspond to the type of scouring pad which may be used, and it should be further understood that the device may beused for any scouring or scrubbing purpose, or for rubbing-down furniture, and other surfaces.

: Having described the invention, what I claim as new is: v

1, A holder comprising a base, a prong member carried by said base, said base having an end portion, an offset bridge portion carried by said prong member and overlying said end portion, means hingedly securing said bridge portion to 4 said base, laterally spaced depending arms carried by said bridge portion and extending across said end portion, a tine carried by each arm and extending under and across said base in one direction, said tines being in substantially spaced parallel relation and adapted to releasably engage a pad for clamping a pad against the under face of said body, and an actuating lever carried by said prong member for swinging said tines away from said base and swinging said depending arms outwardly of and away from said end portion of said base.

A holder comprising a base, a prong member carried by said base, said base having an end portion, said base having an upper face and a bottom face, an abutment carried by said upper 7 face in inset relation to said end portion, said prong member having an offset bridge portion extending across said base in one direction and in contact with said abutment, tines carried by said prong member and extending under the bottom face of said base and adapted to engage a pad for clamping the pad against said bottom face, means connecting said tines to said bridge portion and having abutting engagement with said end portion, said abutment constituting a bracing means to hold said bridge portion and prong member against accidental disengagement from said base under pressure exerted in the direction of said abutment, and said last mentioned means constitutin a bracing means to resist strain upon said prong member in an opposite direction relative to the bridge portion.

A holder comprising a base having an upper and a bottom face, said base having an end portion, a prong member having tines extending under said bottom face, a pad detachably engaged by said prong member for supporting said pad in engagement with said bottom face, arms carried by said tines and extending across and in contacting engagement with said end portion, a bridge portion connecting said arms and overlying said upper face in offset relationinwardly of said end portion, an abutment carried by said base intermediate the end portionand said bridge portion and in abutting engagement with said bridge portion, the abutmentibracing said bridge portion and prong member in one direction, and the arms bracing said prong member in an opposite direction to said bridge portion.

A holder comprising a base having an upper and a bottom face, said base having an endportion, a pron member having tines-extending un der said bottom face, a pad detachably engaged by said prong member for supporting said pad in engagement with said bottom face, arms carried by said tines and extending across and in contacting engagement with said end portion, a bridge'portion connecting said arms and overlying said up per face in offset relation inwardly of said end portion, an abutment carried by said base intermediate the endportion and said bridge portion and in abutting engagement with said bridge portion, the abutment bracing said bridge portion and prong member in one direction, the arms bracing said prong member in an opposite direction to said portion, and .said end portions having notches in which said arms fit to resist lateral strain upon said prong member.

A holder comprising a base having an'upper and a bottom face, said base having an end portion, a prong member having tines extendin under said bottom face, a pad detachably engaged by said prong member for supporting said pad in engagement with said bottomface, arm s carried by said tines and extending across and in contacting engagement With said end portion, a bridge portion connecting said arms and overlying said upper face in ofifset relation inwardly of said end portion, an abutment carried by said base intermediate the end portion and said bridge portion and in abutting engagement with said bridge portion, the abutment bracing said bridge portion and prong member in one direction, the arms bracing said prong member in an opposite direction to said bridge portion, said end portions having notches in which said arms fit to resist lateral strain upon said prong member, said abutment constituting a handle, an actuating lever carried by said prong member and extending rearwardly 15 Number of said end portion and said handle, and yieldable means interposed between said actuating 6 lever and said handle for yieldably holding a pad carried by the tines in engagement with the bottom face of the body.
