Application November 10, 1949} Serial Nofl26,500 I v- 2.Claims. 1
This invention relates to beds, especially to mattresses and more particularly to covers therefor.
'Aprincip'al object of this'inventioniis-Itoproduce a sheet for covering. awmattressbf: :su'ch construction that it may be applied to the mattress without appreciably lifting any portion thereof and after being applied will prevent the pulling of the sheet away from the mattress by an occupant of the bed.
A further object of this invention is to produce a sheet which is particularly useful in covering the mattress of a babys crib because it is so constructed that when applied it will be quite impossible for the baby, lying on the mattress to which the sheet is applied, to displace the sheet.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description of the particular physical em bodiment selected to illustrate the invention progresses and the novel features will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail and the particular physical embodiment selected to illustrate the invention, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings and the several views thereon, in which like characters of reference designate like parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a mattress with a sheet of my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the device as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the plane indicated by the line III-III of the device as shown by Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a view illustrating the form of the sheet used in producing my mattress cover; Fig. 5 is a view of an insert or gore applied to the corners of the sheet as shown in Fig. 4 to make my complete mattress cover.
In Fig. 1, a sheet I is shown applied to a mattress. The sheet covers the upper surface of the mattress and depends on the sides as 2 and the ends as 3 and has extensions as 4 and 5 underlying the mattress 6 on each side and underlying portions as I underlying each end of the mattress.
At each corner, as at 8, 9, III and I I, an insert or gore is positioned between the depending sides as 2, the depending ends as 3, the underlying side extensions as 5 and the underlying end extensions as I.
The sheet I, as best shown by Fig. 4, i made of any suitable textile material, as cotton, and is of general rectangular form as shown in Fig. 4, but at each corner thereof the side edges as 9 and end edges as III are joined by a straight line edge at an: angle .of',xpreferably,
.is attached, as by sewing, a sheet of textile mate- -rial of the. proper form, lasithe formrshownrin Fig. 5.
The textile material, as shown in Fig. 5, in form corresponds with a cross section of a triangular prism lying on one of its side faces upon the face of a parallelopiped, the free edge of the triangular prism being preferably somewhat rounded as at I2.
Before the insert or gore I3, as shown in Fig. 5, is attached to an edge as II, about one-half portion as from I4 to I5 is folded over on the upper portion of the portion corresponding to the cross section of the parallelopiped and is attached along the edge I 6 to the upper portion. In order to attach the insert or gore G to the sheet I, the point I2 is positioned midway between a point as IT and a point as I8 on an edge, and then the edge I I and the gore G are attached together, as by sewing all along the edge of the gore from a point I9 up and around through point I2 to point I4. A corner will then appear as shown by the corner 8 in Fig. l and the under side will appear as the corner 8 appears in Fig. 2.
The gore G is made of a suitable textile material, preferably a flat knit material having spaced elastic threads as 20 inserted therein which, when the gore is in place on a mattress. will run up and down as illustrated in Fig. 1, that is, in the direction of the thickness of the mattress.
The corners or pockets 8 to II inclusive of my construction are such that the sheet I may be placed on a mattress 6 without appreciably lifting of the mattress even at the corner as the hand of the operator may be merely slipped under the mattress to force the corners in place.
When the corners are in place on a mattress, the sheet is resiliently held to the mattress particularly because of the rectangular portions as 2I, as best shown in Fig. 2. These rectangular portions extend, in effect, across the corners of the mattress and prevent the sheet or covering from being removed from the mattress except by placing the hand under the mattress and pulling the portion 2| outwardly. This is an operation which is quite beyond the ingenuity of a small infant.
Fig. 3 illustrates the state of tension of the corner as 8 when it has been stretched around the corner of the mattress and the portion 2I positioned under the mattress.
Although I have particularly described one particular physical embodiment of invention and explained the construction and principle thereof, nevertheless, I desire to have it understood that the form selected is merely illustrative, but does not exhaust the possible physical embodiments of the idea of means underlyin my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a mattress covering sheet, comprising a box-like member having a closed top for covering the upper surface of the mattress, depending end and side walls to cover the sides and ends of said mattress and inwardly directed extensions of the elongated free edges of said end and side walls underlying the marginal portions of the bottom of said mattress, gores, one at each corner of said mattress inserted between the adjacent depending ends and side walls and the adjacent inwardly directed extensions at each corner of the mattress and attached along its entire side edges to the adjacent edges of the top, sides and inwardly directed extensions, said gores formed of textile material formed with elastic threads running in the direction of the thickness of the mattress.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a mattress covering sheet comprising a sheet of textile material of rectangular form with the side edges and end edges thereof Joined in straight line edges at an angle of about 135 with each adjacent edge, gores, one at each corner, each gore of a fiat textile material having the shape of a cross section of a triangular prism resting on one of its side faces on a parallelopiped, the free corner of the triangular prism slightly rounded and about one-half of the portion corresponding to the cross section of the parallelopiped being folded over and attached to the remaining portion, the edges of one bottom corner up and around to the other bottom corner being attached to the said straight line edge.
