1 My invention relates to head rests, and more particularly to means for mounting a suitable head rest in a chair back rest. In this connection, the head rest according to the invention may comprise a head rest such as that illustrated in my application Ser. No. 2,67%, filed January 16, 1948, now Patent No. 2,555,81 dated June 5, 1951. i

With the foregoing in view, an object of my invention is to provide an improved mounting means for a head rest.

A further object is to provide an improved mounting means fora head rest which is readily detachably connectible to a back rest of any of i a plurality of different types of chairslor seats, and which includes means for adjusting the head rest portion thereof relative to the mountin means, whereby the latter and the headrest portion are readily usable by any of a plurality of users. I

Other objects and advantages reside in the particular structure of the invention, combination and arrangement of the several parts there of, and will be readily apparent to those skilled:

Such head rest may comprise a base plate I! adapted to seat a. resilient pad l3 thereon and which is maintained against lateral and endwise displacement by means of suitable end flanges. A suitable sanitary cover encompasses the forward edge portions of the base plate and overlies the resilient pad 13, whereby to retain the latter on the base plate against forward displacement. A suitable bolt or like fastening member [5 may be extended. through the base plate from the front face whereby to extend rearwardly of the base plate for attachment to mounting means to be described later.

The mounting means for the head rest portion H comprises a pair of leg members, such as the rear leg member l6, Figure 2, and theforward leg,

The bolt 25 is adapted to extend through one of a plurality of spaced apertures formed in the foot portion 29 of an L- shaped bracket member 26. Any suitable securing means, such as the Wing nut 351, may be threaded on the bolt 25 to clamp the bracket member 2% in longitudinally adjusted relation along the forward leg member H.

The bracket member 253 includes an elongated portion 21 extending at an acute angle to the foot portion 28, the other end of the portion 2? being formed with longitudinally spaced holes ill through which the bolt I 5 of the base plate 12 of the head rest portion is adapted to extend.

Any suitable fastening means, such as the Wing nut 32, may be threaded on the bolt 1 5 to clamp the head rest in adjusted relation on the portion 2i of the bracket.

As is readily apparent from the foregoing, the

While I have shown and described What is now thought to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of other forms and expressions. Consequently, I do not limit myself to the precise structure shown and described hereinabovc except as hereinafter claimed.

1. In a head rest device for use on a chair back, a rear leg adapted to extend vertically along the rear of the chair back, said rear leg having an arm on its upper end adapted to overlie the top .1

of the chair back, a front leg adapted to extend vertically along the front of the chair back, said front leg having an arm on its upper end adapted to overlie the top of the chair back, the arms of said rear and front legs being in overlying rela- 1 tion, means securing said arms together in selected longitudinal adjustment to produce engagement of the rear and front legs with the rear and front of the chair back, a bracket having an end adapted to carry a head and another end, and means for securing said other end of said bracket to said front leg at selected vertical points along said front leg.

2. In a head rest device for use on a chair back, a rear leg adapted to extend vertically along the rear of the chair back, said rear leg having an arm on its upper end adapted to overlie the top of the chair back, a front leg adapted to extend At the same time, the mounting I;

3. In a head rest device for use on a chair back, a rear leg arranged to be engaged with the rear of the chair back having an arm on its upper end arranged to rest upon the top of the chair back, a front leg to be engaged with the front of the chair back having an arm on its upper end arranged to extend across the chair back top and to overlie the rear leg arm, means securably connecting said arms together for longitudinal adjustment relative to each other to position said rear and front legs in engagement with the rear and front of the chair back, an elongated bracket having an. outer end arranged for supporting a head rest and an inner end, and bolt and slot means formed on said inner end of the bracket and front leg enabling adjusting said bracket into selected vertical positions along said front leg and into selected laterally angulated positions at either side of said front leg.

4. Ina head rest device, a first leg terminating at one end in a first arm extending laterally therefrom, a second leg terminating at one end in a second arm extending laterally therefrom, said first and second arms being in overlying rei'ation with. said first and second legs in parallel spaced relation and slidable longitudinally relative to each other, means securing said arms together for longitudinal adjustment relative to :1 each other so as to increase or decrease the spacing of said legs relative to each other" for releasing or producing clamping engagement of said legs with the front and rear surfaces of a support, and a head rest mounted on one of said legs, comprising a bracket extending laterally from said one leg, said bracket having a free end carrying a pad and another end. and further means mounting said; other end of the bracket on said: one leg for pivoted and sliding adjustment longitudinally and laterally of said one leg.
