An inverted hollow casing or cap 30 is provided, of rectangular section, and the leg component l2 disposed therewithin. Cap 3% comprises a rear wall 32, a pair of side walls 34, 34, a front wall 36 and a top 38, and is of width sufiicient to receive leg l2 snugly therewithin but of depth slightly larger than is leg E2, in order to provide space within casing 38 for means to control the relative movement of casing 30 with respect to leg I 2, as will be detailed below. A lengthwise extending abutment 4G i provided, disposed and secured inside casing 39 on the rear wall 32 thereof, extending inwardly thereof and substantially occupying the space between wall 32 and leg [2. The top of leg I2 is extended over, outwardly, as at 42, and the leg l2 and abutment 525. are so relatively disposed and assembled that extension 42 overlies abutment Ml, which serves as a stop to limit movement of leg l2 downwardly, in the one direction, the underside of top 38 limiting movement of leg l2 upwardly, in the other direction. Abutment 40 is permanently fixed on the inner surface of rear wall 30 by a plurality of inwardly lanced fingers 44, 44. Cap 3!! and leg 12 are thus telescopically arranged for relative movement along a vertical line.
A pair of vertically extending slots 46, 46 are provided in side walls l6, 16, for reasons to be detailed below, said slots being located about midway of the length of leg l2. A cross-pin 48 is provided, extending across walls [6, N of le l2 through the slots for reasons to be detailed below. Pin 48 is trapped within slots 46, 46 by the overlying side walls 34, 34 of cap casing 39. A central opening 5!! is provided through rear wall It, by a portion of the material of wall l4 bein lanced inwardly to form a horizontally extending platform 52. It is to be noted that the lower edge of cap 36 normally overlies platform 52, see Figure 1.
A second leg 60 is provided, also U-shaped in section, opening towards the open aspect of leg I2. Leg fit! has a main wall 62, side walls 64, 64, and an inwardly directed centrally located extension 68 at the bottom thereof, said extension 65 being aligned with recess in extension 18 of leg l2 so as to fit thereinto. Side walls 64, 64 are also progressively narrowed downwardly towards extension Bit, as indicated at 61, to provide a definite and clear projection of extension 66 beyond side walls 64, 54. The upper portion of main wall 62 is angled upwardly and inwardly, as at til, terminating in a short portion 10 extending beyond wall 64, 64 substantially parallel to extension 65. A normally expanding coil spring 72 is disposed within cap trapped between portion 623 oi leg 5|] and the underside of cap wall 38, spring 12 serving normally to maintain the parts in the position illustrated in Figures 1 and 7. Main wall 62 of leg I0 is bumped out, as at M, for reasons to be explained below.
A pair of transversely aligned openings 16, 16 are punched through sides 64, 64 near the top thereof, adjacent main wall 62, and cross pin 48 threaded therethrough. Leg is of such length that its upper and bent over portions 68, 10 extend into and are overlaid by the side walls of cap 35!.
An arcuate slot 80 is formed through each wall 64, 6d of leg 69, curving upwardly slightly from a point level with platform 52. A cross pin 82 is keyed into said slots, and one end of an arcuate- .4 1y shaped draw lever 84 is fixed to the center of pin 82. The free end 85 of lever 84 passes through opening 50, curving upwardly in the space below abutment 40 between wall 32 of cap 30 and the main wall of leg l2.
In operating the device of the present invention, fingers 22, 22 are disposed immediately adjacent the staple S to be withdrawn. Cap 30 is pressed downwardly against the normal tensioning of spring 12, when the lower edge 31 of cap wall 36 is pushed downwardly to ride along the outer aspect of leg 62. Said leg 6-2 i pivoted, as above noted, to leg l2 about pin 48, and is normally maintained in the position of Figures 1 and 7 by expanding spring 12, with the plane of le 62 angled outwardly from the plane of leg i2 and cap 30. The forward end H of extension it limits pivoting movement of leg 62 outwardly under the pressure of spring '12, and the point of application of spring lZ -presSure on extension 79 determines the direction of biasing of leg 62, pivoted as it is at a point spaced laterally of extension 10.
As cap edge 31 rides over bump l4, leg 62 will be caused to pivot about pin 48 and swing inwardly towards leg 12, finger 56 passing under the staples center section into recess 26 between finger 22, 22 of extension l8, and simultaneously drawing fingers 22, 22 under the staple center, as illustrated in Figure 2.
As the downward pressure on cap 30 i maintained and continued, abutment 49 is brought into contact with the free floating end 85 of draw lever 84, and pressing on same causes it to rotate about an imaginary point between the ends there of, and ride on platform 52, to lift leg 69 by means of lever pin 82. The movement of said lever pin 82 is initially downward along the path of arcuate slots $0, 89 and thence upwardly, as seen in Figure '3, pin d8 simultaneously riding upwardly in vertical slots 46, 46 in leg I 2.
As staple S is withdrawn, its bent-over legs are straightened against the outer edges of fingers 22, 22, and the withdrawn staple is confined between finger 66 and the edge 23, 23 of side walls 16.
Th device, with the exception of spring '52 and pins 43 and 82, may be formed as by stamping or otherwise of standard cold rolled steel, and may be nickel plated, or otherwise surface coated, as desired to enhance its appearance. Assembly of the mechanism, as shown, is achieved without the use of screw fastenings. The components a, b of cap 30 may be shaped progressively in a die from flat sheet metal, and closed by dovetail locks 3|, 3|. The legs I2, 60 are connected as described and locked into cap 30 by the abutment limit stop Ml, which is permanently secured by lancings 44, 4 3.
Having now described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
l. A staple extractor comprising a first staple engaging leg member and a second staple engaging leg member pivotally mounted on the first leg and normally swung away therefrom in nonoperative relation thereto, a plunger disposed about the upper ends of the legs and operatively associated therewith for sliding movement downwardly along the length of the first leg, the second leg being reciprocably slidable within the plunger, initial downward movement of the plunger along the first leg engaging the second leg and pivoting said second leg into operative staple engaging relation to the first leg, further downward movement of the plunger raising the second leg within the plunger.
2. A staple extractor as in claim 1, including means normally operable to urge the plunger upwardly of the legs, said means maintaining the second leg angular-1y of the first leg.
3. A staple extractor as in claim 1, including means within the plunger to limit relative length- Wise movement of the first leg with respect thereto in both directions.
4. A staple extractor as in claim 1, and spring means inside the plunger normally operable to urge the plunger upwardly of the legs, one end of the spring bearing against th underside of the plunger top and the other end of the spring bearing against the top of the second leg.
5. A staple extractor comprising a first and fixed leg member, a second and relatively movable leg member connected thereto, a longitudinally extending slot in said first leg and an arcuate slot across the second leg, a transverse opening in the second leg, a pin through said transverse opening in the second leg and through the longitudinal slot in the first leg, a second pin through the arcuate slot in the second leg, a lever having one end thereof fixed to said second pin and its other end free, a plunger overlying both legs and reciprocably movable with respect thereto, initial movement of the plunger downwardly of the first leg pivoting the second leg about the first pin, further movement of the plunger downwardly of and along the first leg engaging the free end of the lever shifting same downwardly with said plunger, raising the pinconnected end thereof and moving the second pin along the arcuate slot and shifting the first pin and second leg upwardly along the slot in the first leg.
6. A staple extractor comprising an elongated, inverted, hollow walled casing open at the bottom thereof, a first staple-engaging leg and a second staple engaging leg disposed within the casing for reciprocable movement therealong, means inside the easing and on a wall thereof spacing the first leg from said wall, and trapping both legs therewithin and limiting movement thereof outwardly of the casing, second leg being pivoted on the first leg, and longitudinally slidable along said first leg, and a lever having one end associated with the second leg and its other end freely disposed within the space between the leg and the wall, downward movement of the casing bringing the spacing means into engagement with the free end of the lever to slidably raise the second leg upwardly of and along the first leg.
'7. A staple extractor comprising an elongated, inverted, hollow walled casing open at the bottom thereof, a first staple-engaging leg and a second staple engaging leg disposed within the casing for reciprocable movement therealong, means inside the casing and on a wall thereof spacing the first leg from said wall, and trapping both legs therewithin and limiting movement thereof outwardly of the casing, the second leg being pivoted oif-center of and on the first leg, and biased normally to extend angularly out of the axis of the casing and first leg, a projection on the second leg, downward movement of the casing engaging and bearing against said projection to swing same into the axis of the casing.
8. A staple extractor comprising an elongated, inverted, hollow walled casing open at the bottom thereof, a first staple-engaging leg and a second staple engaging leg disposed within the casing for reciprocable movement therealong, means inside the casing and on a wall thereof spacing the first leg from said wall, and trapping both legs therewithin and limiting movement thereof outwardly of the casing, the second leg being pivoted off-center of and on the first leg, a normally expanding coil spring bearing against the top of the second leg oppositely oil-center from its pivot point biasing said second leg to a position angled outwardly of the axis of the casing and of the first leg, lever means within the casing having an end thereof engaged with the second leg, 2. projection ontheouter aspect of the second leg, initial downward movement of the casing engaging and overriding the projection and swinging said second le into the axis of the casing, subsequently continued downward movement of the casing engaging the free end of the lever, raising the engaged end thereof, and thereby raising the second leg upwardly and along the first leg.
9. A staple extractor comprising an elongated, walled casing open at the bottom thereof, a first staple-engaging leg and a second staple-engaging leg, the upper portions of the legs being disposed within the casing for reciprocable movement therealong, limit stop means inside the casing and on a wall thereof spacing the first leg from said wall, a projection from said first leg extending into said spacing limiting movement thereof .out of the casing by abutment against the limit stop means, an opening through the first leg, a lever having one end thereof associated with the second leg and its other end extending through the opening in the first leg and into the space between said first leg and the casing wall, downward movement of the casing bringing the limit stop means into engagement with the free end of the lever, depressing same and raising its other end and the second leg upwardly of and along the first leg.
10. A device as in claim 9, wherein the second leg is shorter than the first leg and is pivotally connected thereto, and having a longitudinally extending slot in the first leg along which slot the pivot of the second leg rides during its upward movement and return.
11. A device as in claim 9, wherein the second leg is shorter than the first leg and is pin-pivotally connected thereto, and having a lengthwise extended slot in the first leg along which the pivot pin of the second leg rides during its upward movement and return, an arcuate slot across the second leg and a pin therein connected to the one end of the lever, the lever being curved and pivoting about a point between its ends on movement of the limit stop against its free end depressing the latter and moving the connected end and pin along the arcuate slot of the second leg, raising same upwardly of and along the ,first leg.
