A notch is thereby produced between the facing surface of panels 3U, 36.
It will be observed the foregoing construction the cover for the casing constitutes two halves, each of which includes two units. The first of these units comprises the panels 28, 3U and the second, which has the notch 35 at its inner longitudinal edges, comprises the panels 32, 34, 33. The first unit is hinged to the casing, and the second unit is hinged to the first.
A flexible ribbon 38 made, for instance of cloth runs under each end of the platform near the end Walls of the casing, each ribbon being secured as by cementing to the bottom of the platform. The ends of each ribbon are attached as by cementing under the outer edges of the panels 32 near the ends thereof. Each hinge strip 29 stopsshort of the ends of its associated panel 23 so thatrclear spa-ces are provided between the panels 28, 32 through which the ribbons can slide.
In the form of the invention illustrated the length of each ribbon is such that when the platform is adjacent the bottom wall of the casing, the ribbon will have no slack therein; To .this end the combined widths of the panels 28, 34 is approximately equal to the height of the casing above the platform when the container is closed, and the length of ribbon between the top of the casing and the bottom of the platform is substantially equal to the depth of the casing.
If the height of the casing above the platform is appreciably greater than the combined widths of the panels 23, 34, the platform will be suspended above the bottom wall of the casing when the container is closed, or the platform, if the ribbon is lengthened to prevent such suspension, will be below the top of the casing when the container is open. If the combined widths of the panels 28, 34 appreciably exceeds the height of the casing above the platform, there will be slack in the ribbons when the container is closed.
It will be observed that in no case should the length of the ribbon from the top of the platform to the top of the closed container be less than the combined width of the panels 28, 34.
A'tab 40 is secured to the middle of the outer edge of each panel 32.
To raise the platform and automatically lock the same in raised position the tabs simply are pulled outwardly as far as they will go and are released. The sequence of operation consequent upon such manipulation is as follows:
As the tabs initially are pulled, each panel 28 will turn on its hinge 29 to a vertical position and each panel 32 will then pivot outwardly on its hinge until it reaches a position 180 from that at which it started. At the same time, each panel 28 will continue to move from its original position until abutted by an associated panel 33 carried by an associated panel 32 by means of an associated panel 34. At this point each panel 28 will lie in the same plane as its associated panel 34, and the facing edges of these panels will be Separated by a distance equal to the sum of the width of a panel 32 and the width of a hinge strip 3| minus the sum of the widths of panel 34. At this point each panel 36 extends over the adjacent edges of its associated panels 28 and 34, and panel 32 lies under both adjacent edges, it lying directly unthat in accordance with I, ciated panels 28 4ciated panels 32 and der the panel 34 and under panel 30 which is attached to panel 28, the panel 30 lying below panel 28 at this point. Thus, a cavity 52 is produced from the notch, said cavity being located between associated panels 32 and 36. The weight of the tray will pull panel 34 towards panel 28 thereby forcing the latter into the cavity. Panel 32 will be able to slide along panel 3D because the hinge strip 3l therebetween is flexible and of a width as specified above. The display case is now locked in open position as the panel 28 cannot move about its associated hinge strip 3l until its associated panel 34 is manually pulled away from it to free its associated panel 30 because panels 28 and 3B are held between the asso- 36. The ribbon on complete opening will have been pulled upwardly a distance equal to the combined widths of assoand 34 whereby the tray has been brought into view.
1t should be noted that associated panels 30,
v32 must be close enough together where attached by a hinge strip 3| so that panel 30 cannot fail to enter the notch when the cover is opened.
It thus will be seen that there is provided a device which achieves all the objects of the invention and is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use. v As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein described, or shown in the accompanying drawings, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
