2 Claims.

This invention relates to a blackboard eraser and the like and it consists in the constructions, arrangements and combinations herein described and claimed.

It is the cardinal obj ect of the invention to provide a novel construction of pad gripping and holding device embodying but two parts, which are separable for placement or removal of a cleaning pad.

More specically, it is an object of the invention to provide a hollow body member having side walls and a base member which function as a support for a pad element, a hollow gripping means being provided having spaced gripping jaws adapted to straddle the side walls of the body member and portions of a pad which are disposed upon the side walls of the body member so as to lrmly retain the pad in smooth position upon the base of the body member.

It is a still further object of the invention to provide a pad holder in which the parts thereof may be readily molded from plastic or other light weight materials and which will be economical to manufacture.

Additional objects, advantages and features of invention will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein,

Figure i is a transverse cross section of the pad gripping means, detached from the main body of the device.

While the following description will be directed to a blackboard eraser, the device is not limited to such use, since obviously the device can be used for holding cleaning pads of a polishing type, or a sheet of abrasive cloth or paper.

Attention is now invited to Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing, wherein a pad holding device it is shown comprising a hollow base member i i upon the bottom wall i2 of which a cleaning pad or cloth I3 is positioned, the pad being Of a size to extend upon and over the edges of the side walls of the base member, the pad being secured in position by means of a gripping member it. The pad or cloth i3 may be chemically treated to more effectively clean a wall surface.

As clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3, the base member Il is of rectangular form and may be formed from a plastic or other light weight materials. End walls l5 and side walls it are integral with the bottom wall i2 and preferably the juncture between the side walls and the bottom wall are slightly rounded'so that the pad I3 will be snugly fitted therearound. Each of the end walls I5-are formed with a recess Il upon their outer faces, and below the'recesses, the walls are formed. with a projection I8.

The gripping member is likewise of rectangular formation having respective end walls I9, side walls 2G and a top wall 2|. The inside dimensions between the end and side walls is such as to slidably receive the side and end walls of the base member Il therebetween, and in order to releasably hold the base and gripping member together the end walls I are each provided with va nodule 22 so positioned as to seat in respective recesses il of the base member I I.

Inwardly of each of the side Walls 2U of the gripping member I4 there is a wall 23 spaced from the walls 28 forming a passage 2li for a purpose as will presently appear. Each of the walls 23 terminate inwardly of the end walls I9 as at 25 to permit passage of the walls I5 of the base member II (see Figure 2). The end walls I9 are each formed with a projection 26 arranged above the projection I8 of the base member I l when the gripping member I4 is in position thereon, these ribs being employed when separating the gripping member from the base member.

The side Walls 29 of the gripping member are formed with a plurality of ribs 2l enabling a ready manipulation of the device over a surface.

In order to install a pad or cloth I3, the gripping member being separated from the base member, the pad which is of rectangular shape is laid upon the bottom wall i2 of the base, the longitudinal end portions 28 are brought into contacting engagement with the outer faces of the walls I6 of the base and then presented upon the inner faces of the walls It. The gripping member I4 is then brought into position on the base l I with the passages 2li directly aligned with the side walls l and portions of the pad. The gripping device is given a downward pressure until the nodules 22 snap into the recesses il. The walls 23 cooperate with the walls it and 2t to securely hold the pad i3 in snug ilat position upon the bottom wall I2 of the base. The gripping member ld may be readily separated from the base i I by exerting opposed pressure between the projections i8 and 2t so as to disengage the nodules 22 from the recesses il.

The ribs 2l' provide a means for readily gripping the device so that the pad may be effectively moved across a surface to be cleaned.

'While I have shown and described a preferred form of the device, this is by way of illustration only, and I consider as my own, all such modications in construction as fairly fall Within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A pad holding and gripping device comprising a base member having upwardly disposed vertical side and end walls anda bottom Wall, a pad member positioned on the bottom Wall and extended up and overtle side Walls t`o position the terminalv ends of the pad upon the inner face of respective side walls, and a gripping member having a top wall, vertical end Walls and side walls of such dimensions as to encompass. the side and end Walls of the base member and portions of the pad, and said gripping eib'fufther having a vertical Wall spaced xesiieci-V to respective side Walls thereof adapted to. bind.- ingly engage portions of the pad positioned on the inner faces of the side Walls of the base member, said spaced Wal-1 bei-rig of a length I'e'ss tlfian the adjacent side Walls" oit gripping' member;

A pady holding and ppii-ig device compris ing a' base membei`-` having vertical side and endl Walls` and a bottom Wall, a pad member positionedon the bottom Wall and extended upv and over the side Walls to position the terminal ends of the pad member upon the inner face of respective side walls, a gripping member having a top Wall, vertical end walls and side walls of such dimensions as to encompass the side and end walls of the base member and said gripping member further having a vertical Wall spaced with respect to respective side walls thereof adapted to bindingly engage portions of the pad positioned on the inner faces of the side Walls of the base member, said spaced wall being of a length less than the adjacent side walls of the gripping member, separable means on the end Walls of said; base and gripping member for maintaining the parts in assembled relation, and said gripping member having longitudinal ribs on the outer faces of the sidewalls thereof.
