Description
GEORGE w. SLATER, on NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
SHIPS STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,528, dated December 20, 185 9.; i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SLATER, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves for Ships; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the a11- nexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a side sectional view of a stove with my invention applied to it, taken in the line w, m, Fig. 3. Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical section of ditto, taken in the line 00, m, Fig. 3. Fig. 3, is a plan or top view of ditto partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in a stove to be used on shipboard for which Letters Patent bearing date Januaryfith,
1857, were granted to Daniel S. Beardsley in connection with John D. Umberfield, and of which Letters Patent I am now the sole assignee.
The invention consists in hanging the stove aforesaid by means of adjustable or independent thimbles, substantially as hereinafter fully described, whereby said thimbles may be cast separately instead of with the whole flue as formerly and perfect joints obtained as well as more durable ones, the invention also admitting, of a more ready adjustment or fitting up of the stove.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a stove which maybe of any suitable form and designed either for cooking or exclusively heating purposes. In the drawings an ordinary rectangular cook stove is represented. This stove A, like the patented one previously alluded to, is suspended in a swinging frame B, a transverse half 0;, of which is a flue connected with an upright stationary flue or pipe C, by a hollow joint D. The stove is also suspended to the frame B, by hollow joints E, E, which form a communication between the stove and the flue a. By suspending the stove in this manner, it, like the compass box is permitted to retain a proper position,-the swinging frame B, and jointed connections of the stove to it compensating for the rolling of the ship.
The joints D, E, E, which; constitute y, 1 I, invention are formed each'of two distinct parts to wit, thimbles b, and sockets o. The I thimbles are simply shorttubes castwithfa t C flanch d, at their outer ends, said flanjches having dove-tail ed es andyfitted indove-i tail grooves in the ue]a,see Fig. This method of attachingjthe thimbles tothe flue a, prevents any lateral displacementof the; same and at the same time admits of theiij ready adjustment to and removal from the communicate with'the fluela. v
flue a, when necessary. The thimbles b, all
To the stove A, at each side a socketic, is j attached to receive thethimbles.-yThese sockets are cast separately a nd theyl are bolted to the stove so asto connect with its a v j flue g, as shownclearly in Fig, 2. The
sockets a, are of such a siZe'as to receivethe I] 1 31i 11 thimbles b, of the joints E, E, said thimbles being allowed to turn freely therein. The A thimble of the joint Works 011th? socket I 0, attached to the flue G. 1
From the above description; itwillbeseeri that in case of wear or breakage, {either the so thimbles or sockets lmaykbe" detachedjand I Lg; replaced by new ones, and it will also be seen that as these parts are castseparatelyfl they may be of a finer andjmore durablema:
terial than the other partsiof the stove and; also maybe cast perfectly. I In the original j I stove the thimbles and socketsfwerje east I with the flue a, and stove A,Jandconsequently in casexof any imperfection in eitherllff 1 thimble or socket, i allthe ether parts: re quired to be re-inelted infifactmthey Wer worthless except as old metal. By thisflin vention perfect joints areinsured and when v worn by use or in case of'beinginjuredi in v E; half of the frame B,i:correspondin withthej j H Y any way they may be readily repaired. 1 {The flue portion a, hasan ordinaryjoint h, a I
Having thus describedimyinvention what, I
desire tolsecure by Let-j 1 l l Q o Forming the jointsO, D, D, of the thima i j I claim as new and ters Patent, 1s,
bles b, and sockets c, attached respectively to the swinging flue a, stoveA, and stationary 1 flue C, substantially as for the purp pose set forth. I y GEORGEW, SLATER. I I
