Description

Oct. 6, 1953 w. M. ROBINSON 2,654,148
D-ISPOSABLE RAZOR Filed July 10, 1951 INVEN TOR. #444 0 M fiaa/wa/v Patented Oct. 6, 1953 'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE msrossnm azor: 7 1 Ward M. Robinson, Mesdville, Pa. Application July 10, 1951, Serial No. 235,939 lClaim. (01.30-32) This invention relates to safety razors, and particularly to an improved disposable razor or shaver and method of making the same.
It is the general object of the present invention to provide a simple and inexpensively constructed razor so that the same may be sold at a very low price and discarded after a single use.
I It is another object of the invention to provide an improved razor which is efficient and effective in its use, and yet one which may be dispensed in an automatic vending machine at a reasonable price and quickly assembled ready for use.
It is a more specific object of this invention to provide'a disposable razor and method of making the same which can be conveniently and inexpensively molded from a suitable plastic material having a blade permanently embedded in the material.
Various other objects and advantages of this invention will be more apparent in the course of the following specification, and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, there is shown for the purpose of illustration, an embodiment and severa1 modifications thereof which my invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top view of the improved razor of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an end view thereof;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a modified form of razor of the present invention;
- edge thereof. In the body portion 2 and between the guard portions 3 and 4, there is disposed a blade 5 which is permanently embedded in the molded material and surrounded thereby, ex-
cept at its cutting edge 6 which is exposed and sharpened for cutting.
On the lower side of the body portion 2; there is provided a transversely extending wedgeshaped groove I formed in the molded material and defined by a pair of spaced-apart outwardly extending parallel portions 8. There is provided a handle member 9 having a wedge-shaped tongue portion 10 corresponding to the groove 1 in the body portion with which it cooperates when the razor is assembled ready for use. This handle member is also of a plastic material and preferably integrally molded with the body portion, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings,
'- and connected thereto at the rear edge thereof by means of a relatively thin web portion l2. That is, the plastic material flows in the mold so as to form the body portion 2 having the handie member 9 connected thereto whereby an inral one-piece substantially fiat body or unit is provided.
When it is desired to use the razor, the handle member 9 is broken from the body portion 2 at the thin web portion l2 and is attached to the body portion by positioning the tongue Ill opposite the groove 1 in the body portion at either end thereof and sliding the tongue into the groove to the position, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, so as to provide an assembled unit ready for use. After it has been used, it may be discarded or, if desired, cleaned, ready for another use.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings, there is shown a slight modification of my invention. In this construction, a wedge-shaped groove [3 is arranged longitudinally of the body portion between a pair of outwardly extending parallel portions 14 and I5 instead of transversely thereof as in the preferred form. This permits the use of a much larger handle member l6 which is also integrally molded with the body portion and connected thereto, as before, by means of a relatively thin web portion ll. As before, the handle member has a, wedge-shaped tongue portion l8 which is complementary to the groove l3 and with which it cooperatively engages when the "handle member is assembled thereon ready for use in the same manner as described heretofore.
It will be seen in this construction that the handle will be disposed longitudinally of the body portion 2 when assembled therewith instead of transversely thereof as in the first embodiment.
In the construction shown in Fig. 7, the razor is substantially the same as that of the preferred embodiment, except that the blade I9 instead of being flat has substantially a tear-drop rolled 3 cross section with the blade, as before, permanently embedded in the plastic material of the body portion at the time of molding.
In Fig. 8 of the drawings, there is shown another modification of my invention, and this construction is also substantially the same as that of the preferred form, except that the blade 20 is formed from a round piece of stock, as shown in the dotted lines, and ground, as shown. so as to provide an exposed sharpened edge. as at 2|.
In the modification shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings, there is provided a body portion 22 01' a molded plastic material, as before, having a blade 23 permanently embedded in the material. In this construction, there is provided a round handle member 24 having a tapered end portion 25 which fits when assembled into a complementary tapered hole 29 in the body portion. I! desired, this handle member 24 may also be integrally molded with the body portion 22 in a manner similar to that shown in the other constructions.
As a, result of my invention, it will be seen that there is provided a simple and inexpensive razor which can be conveniently molded into a substantially flat unit. As a result, such a construction lends itself to easy packaging and handling so that it can be conveniently dispensed in vending machines in such places as wash and locker rooms. It also can be easily packed for travelling as it requires a minimum amount of space.
. 4 While I have shown and described an embodiment and several modifications thereof which my invention may assume in practice. it will be understood that this embodiment and the modifications are merely for the purpose of illustration and description, and that other forms may be devised within the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
What I claim as my invention is:
A disposable razor oi the class described comprising a body portion of a molded plastic material, a blade permanently embedded in the material of said body portion having at least one edge thereof exposed and sharpened for cutting, a hanfile member molded with said body portion and detachably secured thereto, and cc-operable interengaging means carried by said handle and said body portion for connecting the same to said body portion in assembled relation ready for use after it is detached from said body portion.
