WELTE D MOCCASIN Filed Jan. 12, 1953 Iva/8725071 flarlf/zomas ybz Patented Oct. 27, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WELTED MOCCASIN Earl Thomas Taylor, Beloit, Wis. Application January 12, 1953, Serial No. 330,631
2 Claims.
My invention relates to moccasins and more particularly to a welted moccasin.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a shoe structure which combines the casual appearance and comfort of a moccasin but having a firm but still flexible sole portion.
Another object of my invention is in the combination of a moccasin formed upper with a welted and flexible sole portion forming a welted moccasin.
Yet another object of my invention is in the formation of a welted moccasin formed by connecting an insole, having a flexible insert, with the sole by means of a welted connection.
A further object of my invention is in the combination of a moccasin sewn upper affixed to the sole by means of a welted construction which includes stitching of the welt to the sole and upper and a specially formed flexible insole.
Other objects will appear when the following specification is considered in connection with the attached drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the welted moccasin;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the manner of fabricating the welted moccasin;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line w-a of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 22-12 of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the drawings, we find in Fig. 1 a view showing the outward appearance of the finished welted moccasin. It is immediately apparent the applicants structure has the general casual appearance of the well-known moccasin type of foot gear.
Stitching l joins the toe plug H with the vamp [2 to form the moccasin sewn upper l3a having a quarter [3.
The instep is crossed by fixedly sewn strap l4 and flexible, resilient leather strips I5 are sewn thereto at Ma. Strips l5 are further sewn to the toe plug at 30 and extend parallelly upwards to terminate in underturned ends a. which are sewn to an elastic lining 1 6a by means of stitching I 6. The strips I5 are also preferably stitched to lining Ilia substantially throughout their lengths by means of longitudinal stitching, not shown. The outermost strips 3| and 32 are further longitudinally stitched to the edges of the upper at 33 and 34, and the elastic lining is secured to the upper assembly by means of its longitudinal stitching to strips 3| and 32. The elastic lining [6a may be further fastened to strips I5 by means of an elastic adhesive.
Strapping of the instep could be accomplished, of course, in any number of ways.
The moccasin upper l3a is connected to welt l1 and specially formed insole [8 by means of stitching 19 as clearly shown in several of the figures in the drawings.
Insole l8 has its lower portion formed at 20 2 to receive a flexible treated cork insert H which fills the space between the insole and sole 22.
A narrow corrugated stiffened metal strip 23, disposed under the insole I8, is imbedded in the treated flexible insert 2| in a manner to form an arch support, but at the same time permit the degree of flexibility required in this type of foot gear.
The sole 22 is stitched at 25 to the welt l1.
Heel 26 is nailed as at 21 to the'sole 22 in the usual manner.
The liner consisting of the toe plug liner 28, instep liner [6a, and main liner 29 is cemented and sewn within the moccasin in the usual manner.
Applicants welted moccasin construction is completed by cementing the heel and arch seat 30 over the rear portion of the liner.
This application is a continuation in part of my copending application Serial No. 180,330, filed August 19, 1950, now abandoned.
I claim:
1. A welted moccasin comprising a moccasin type upper including a vamp and quarter, a toe plug sewn to said vamp and an instep portion comprising flexible resilient leather strips attached to said toe plug, an insole having outer depending flanges having lower edges contacting and coinciding with the lower edges of said said upper, a flexible insert within and filling the space within the flanges of said insole, a welt stitched to the lower edges of the upper and to the lower edges of the insole, an outsole stitched to the welt, and a continuous one layer liner stitched to the upper edges of the quarter and to the vamp and the toe plug and covering all of the upper surface of said insole and all of the inner surface of the quarter and vamp portion of said upper.
2. A welted moccasin comprising a moccasin type upper including a vamp and quarter, a toe plug sewn to said vamp and an instep portion comprising flexible resilient leather strips attached to said toe plug, an insole having outer depending flanges having lower edges contacting and coinciding with the lower edges of said upper, a flexible insert within and filling the space within the flanges of said insole, a welt stitched to the lower edges of the upper and to the lower edges of the insole, an outsole stitched to the welt. a continuous one layer liner stitched to the upper edges of the quarter and to the vamp and the toe plug and covering all of the upper surface of said insole and all of the inner surface of the quarter and vamp portion of said upper, an elastic lining member covering the inner surface of said instep portion, and means securing said resilient leather strips to said elastic lin- 11 EARL THOMAS TAYLOR.
