BOX CONSTRUCTION Filed Jan. 21, 1950 I; I a f! 1in Ill Inventors William Stas [1 y Paul Koslelancik Patented Dec. 8, 1953 'lhefinvention' relates to improvementsin box construction and is more particularly concerned with-the construction of a corrugated paper box ofz'sufiicient size to enclose 'a'mattress, orthe like; the 'box having integral novel end flaps'foldable to close the ends of the box.
--"Iti-has"l heretofore been exceedingly difficult andzicostly 'to manufacture packages orJboxes for large; unwieldy'articles such as mattresses. When the box isformed of a'single sheet'of-materialscoredto.facilitate folding, it is difficult to handle the materialandto feed it through scorin'gimachines. Also, it is necessary, when' manufactur'ingjsuch apne-piece box, to perform a separate'operation in orders'to slot, the ends 'to provide conventional, foldable-endl flaps." This requires the feeding of the large, unwieldy blank through a second machine Considerablexex.-.

Another object is to provide a mattress box having end flaps scored in such a manner that the boxis reinforced when the flaps are folded into and secured in box end closing position.
Another object is to provide a novel method for forming a box of the character described.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description and accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the an,- nexed claim.

The. score lines 13 and I6 intersect at the ends of the side panel 15. The end portions ll, defined by the transverse edges of the blank and the related score lines l6, constitute flaps adapted to be folded over the ends of the box when the latter is assembled.
To assemble the box H, two blanks 12 are so arranged with'respeot to one another that the longitudinal free edge of the panel l5 on one blank is complemental to the longitudinal free edge of the panel It on the other blank. Suitablestrips of adhesive material I8 are laid over understood that the invention is not confined to the exact features shown as various changes may be made within the scope of the claim which follows.
In the drawings:

the complemental free edges and are secured to the marginal areas thereof so that when the blanks are folded along their score lines l3 a substantially rectangular shallow box of the kind shown in Fig. 1 is provided.
It has been indicated hereinabove that the box is particularly constructed to receive a mattress or the like. Obviously, adequate protection of such an article can be attained only when the ends of the box are closed and firmly secured in such manner as to increase the rigidity of the box as a whole. In order to accomplish this, the end flaps I! are adapted to be folded over inwardly one upon the other in the manner illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. Folding of the end flaps l I is made possible by providing a diagonal score line H in each of the end flap portions 2 i2|' on the ends of the side panels I5. The diagonal score lines 19 extend from' the intersections 'of the longie tudinal and transverse score lines l3 and 16 to the related corners of the blank l2. When scored in this manner, one of the end flap portions, for
example flap portion 2|, of the flap Il isinitially folded inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, to permit the connected main flap portion-22 on the end of one of the main panels 14 to fold inwardly! downwardly substantially at right angles to the plane of the panel [4. Inasmuch as the-flap portion 22 has a width corresponding to the width of th side panel 15, its free edge is disposed in substantial abutment with the inside face of the opposedpanel 3M of'the associated blank. The flap portion 2| on said :other blank then is tucked in so astooverlie thepreviously folded panel flap portion :22 andcarry'the remaining main flap portion 22 into a positionto overlie the previously folded main flap 22. When the flaps arefo'lded in the manner described hereinabove they may be secured in any-suitable manner, such as by the application of strips of adhesive'coated material or by stitches. It should be quite obvious that the box is closed tightly at itsends and thatth'e closed flaps tend to reinforce the box against inadvertent collapse.
The blank23 illustrated'in'Fig. 5 is substantia'lly'li'ke the blank shown in Fig. .4 and like numerals-are used to identify corresponding parts thereof. In this instance, the blank has a tab Zipreferably on the longitudinal edge of the side panel 1-5. When-two blanks of this character are assembled in the same manner as the previously discussed blanks are assembled, the tab '24 is folded substantially at right angles to the side panel l5'to'overlie the complemental edge of the adjacent panel on :the associated blank and stitches or-an adhesive may be used to secure the two blanks assembled.
'It should beapparent that a box constructed in the manner described hereinabove is inexpensive to manufacture owing primarily to the arrangement of the score lines in the two identical blanks, the use of which avoids any need for the usual additional machine operations required to slot the end flaps in alignment with the longitudinal score line l3, and that the invention is capable of embodying modifications in its details of construction and assembly without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
We claim: I
