This invention relates to hand brushes, and more particularly is directed to portable hand brushes of compact construction each provided with a handle carrying case from which a bristle member of the brush can be adjustably projected from a fully concealed position to an effective position for use. Such hand brushes are adapted to be conveniently carried about the person or in handbags and readily set-up for clean sweeping wearing apparel. Examples of such brushes are metallic bristle pocket brushes for use in restoring attractive iinishes of suede shoes, and for other personal purposes.

Among the objects of the invention is to generally improve hand brushes of the character described comprising few and simple parts, which shall be easily and readily assembled to provide compact yet attractive appearing personally carried articles of recognizable utility, which shall be relatively cheap to manufacture, which shall provide ready means to adjustably project bristle members from fully concealed positions within handle carrying cases to effective positions for use, and which shall be practical and eiiicient to a high degree.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the .features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the claims following.

Fig. 1 is a front elevational view showing a pocket or handbag wearing apparel brush in a fully open position with the bristle member extended from its handle-holder in an effective position ready for use and constructed to embody the invention.

Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevational and bottom plan views, respectively, of the improved brush as shown in Fig. 1.

Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged cross sectional views taken on line 4--4 in Fig, 1 and line 5--5 in Fig. 4, respectively, showing the interior construction of the improved brush.

Referring in detail to the drawing, i0 denotes a hand brush constructed to embody the invention provided with a handle-casing or holder II into which a bristle carrying member I 2 telescopes, that is, can be slidingly projected from a fully concealed position, shown in Fig. '7, to effective positions for use, shown in Figs. l and 2, and in dotted lines in Fig. 7.

Handle-casing IE, as is clear from Figs. 3, 4, and 5, may be a shell or container-like enveloping closure structure having an open end Ila through which bristle member I2 moves from said concealed position shown in Fig. 7 to the effective using positions, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in dotted lines in Fig. 7. Said handle-casing I I may be made of metal or other suitable sheet material and preferably is molded of a thermoplastic resin with an integrally formed rim ledge Hb about said open end Ila and having a continuous structure reinforcing rib or fin Ilc centrally extending about the length and width of said casing Ii between spaced apart ends of the rim ledge Hb, said rib Ilc being integrally formed as part of the casing II together with rim ledge IIb.

Hand-brush Il! may be constructed to accommodate a bristle carrying member I2 of various cross-sectional shapes, such as, round, oval and square or modifications thereof. For personal use in restoring the appearance of wearing apparel said bristle member I2 may be made With a plurality of rows of tufts |211 of hair or plastic bristles carried by a backing piece I i2lb and for use on suede shoes it has been found that such tufts I2a may be of a suitable metallic bristle, such as brass or bronze. As shown in the drawing, bristle carrying member I2 having said rows of tufts |211 requires a correspondingly shaped handle-casing I I with a flattened front wall lid parallelly aligned with a rear Wall IIe. Front wall iid may have a central passage or slot I if through which a rider I4 knob headed at Illa freely extends carried by backing piece IZb of bristle carrying member I2.

It is desirable that the bristle carrying member I2 be releasably retained and fully shielded in extreme retracted compact position concealed within handle-casing Il when not in use as Shown in full lines in Fig. 7, and that handlecasing I I releasably retain said member i2 when fully extended, as shown in Figs. l and 2, so that the handle-casing II serves as efficient nger gripping means for the bristle carrying member I2 for a brushing operation which permits flexing the entire lengths of the bristle tufts I2a. Also bristle tufts I2a should be selectively retained in an intermediate projected position as is clear from the dotted line position shown in Fig. 7, so that the effective flexing length of bristle tufts I2a is shortened for relatively stiffer brushing by brush I as required in so-called stubborn cleaning operations that is, for removing excess soil or deeply penetrated stains.

For stubborn cleaning operations, suitable means may be provided, for example, as shown in the drawing, edge portions of flattened front wall IId bordering slot IIf are formed with spaced apart notches, IIg, I Ih and IIa' for selectively engaging with resilient longitudinally partially split shank I4b of rider I4 with shank split I4c extending through knob Ilia and springingly spread. Said rider I4 may be made of any suitable spring forming material, either metal or plastic, having end I4d opposite knob Ma rmly anchored in the backing piece I2b, said slot HI' being of a width to permit sliding movement of the rider shank Mb when the split knob Ita has finger pressure applied to bring the spread of the shank split to a minimum.

Notches IIg when releasably engaged by rider shank I4b seated therein retains the bristle carrying member I2 in said extreme retracted position, notches IIh so retain member I2 in said fully extended position, and notches Hy' in said intermediate position, above described.

From the above description and the drawing the utility of the invention is readily understood. The improved brush I0 after being assembled as shown in Figs. 1 to 5 has backing piece I2b of bristle carrying member I2 interlocked by rider I4 for limited sliding movement in and out of said open end IIa of handle-casing II. The tufts I2a are permanently set, that is, anchored into backing piece I2b as shown at I2c in Fig. 4.

Bristle carrying member I2, in fully extended position shown in.. Figs. 1 to 5, permits handlevcasing II to be conveniently grasped by the lingers of the user and the effects of the full length of tufts I2a swept over the surface to be cleanedin the well understood manner. Rider 1I4 has the split shank |417, thereof sprung into notches IIh to effectively prevent the bristle carrying member I2 from accidently backing up into the handle-casing II.

Where stii brushing is required, the knob Ida is nger pressed to close the slit |40, thereby releasingthe split shank. |41). from engaging with notches IIh, andrider I4 is slid along slot IIf with bristle carrier member I2 until the split shank I4b registers in alignment with notches II9'. On releasing knob Ida, shank I4b will spring apart to engage in said notches II7 and will position the lengths of tufts I 2a partially beyond hand-casing II as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7 thereby exposing a shorter than full length of said tufts I2a to present an effectively stiffer abrasive brushing means for use in stubborn requirements.

When brushing operations have been finished, hand brush I0 may be collapsed into a compact body by finger pressing knob I4 as above described to release the split shank I4b from engagement with either notches IIh or IIa' and then sliding rider I4 in slot IIf until the split shank I4b registers in alignment with notches I Ig. On releasing said finger pressure from knob Ma, shank I4b will spring apart at split I4c to engage in said aligning notches IIg and will be eiective to positively retain the tufts I2a concealed wholly within handle-casing I I, as is clear from the full lines of Fig. 7. In this collapsed compact form, hand-brush I0 may be conveniently carried in the pocket or handbag and the tufts I2a shielded by the handle-casing I I against soiling linings or other contents in such pocket or handbag.

It is therefore seen that there is provided improved hand brush in which the objects of the invention are achieved and which are Well adapted to meet all conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments may be made in the above invention for use for different purposes and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is understood that all the above matters here set forth, or shown in the accompanying drawing are to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Thus having described my invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A' pocket wearing-apparel brush comprising a handle-casing formed with a flat wall and an open end, a bristle carrying member mounted for sliding movement into and out of said handlecasing through said open end, said handle-casing having a depth greater than the length of said member and bristles in the direction of said sliding movement so that said member and bristles are completely housed and concealed in casing when in a fully retracted position and in an eiective brushing position when said bristles are extended beyond said handle-casing open end, said casing i'lat wall formed with an elongated slot extending therethrough in the direction of said sliding movement, a finger actuated rider carried by said member to extend through said slot to produce said sliding movement upon the application of pressure, a strengthening ledge integrally formed as a rim extension about said casing open end, and a portion of said rider extending through said slot having a split resilient shank end formed to terminate beyond said casing, edge portions of said casing flat wall bordering said slot being formed with notches for engagement by said split shank end for releasably retaining said mem.- ber with the bristles in predetermined effective positions beyond the casing.
