ATTORNEYS Patented May 25, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Glenn Henry Simpson, Spray, 'N. -C., assignor, by mesne assignments, to Fieldcr'est Mills, Inc., 'a
corporation of Delaware Application November 8, 1951, Serial No. 255,375
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in bed clothing and more especially to such articles of bed clothing as blankets, sheets, covers, spreads, counterpanes, and the like, of the type which are placed in position on or over the mattress of a bed and preferably over the lower sheet of a mattress of a bed and adapted to serve as a top sheet or cover of any of the above-named types.
It is an object of this invention to provide a top cover or bed clothing such as a sheet, cover and the like which may be easily placed on the mattress and which has a pocket at the lower end thereof fitting over the mattress with the lower side'of the pocket resting between the mattress and bed springs disposed therebeneath, to thereby confine the pocket in position and this will eliminate tucking or inserting the foot portion of the sheet or cover underneath the mattress and will lend to a quicker and easier and more neat make-up of the bed than by using the conventional top sheets or covers. With articles heretofore used, certain serious difliculties and disadvantages are met with and encountered in the resulting appearance of a bed make-up therewith and in the use of the bed when so made up.
One of the difiiculties which arises is that when the sides and lower foot portions of atop sheet are tuckedunderneath the lower end of the mattress, there is puckering and an untidy appearance which causes the bed to present an appearance of bad make-up and this is overcome by providing the pocket at the lower end of the top sheet.
I am aware that heretofore the patent to McWhorter No. 1,865,329 shows a top sheet in Figures 8 to 11, inclusive, which can be placed over the lower end of the mattress but this sheet allows no foot room and, therefore, would be impractical.
It is an object of this invention to provide a top sheet having a. pocket at the lower end thereof with the side walls of the pocket being from one to two inches higher than the vertical height of the mattress so as to allow ample foot room when it is used.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an isometric view of a top sheet in position on a mattress and with the mattress resting on a suitabl bed spring, such as a box spring;
Figure 2 is an isometric view similar to Figure 1 but showing a person disposed beneath the sheet and illustrating the amount of foot room 2 which is present between the top sheet and the lower sheet which is disposed on the mattress;
Figure 3 is an isometric view looking up at the lower portion of the top sheet and with the top portion thereof broken away for sake of clearness;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view similar to Figure 3 but on an enlarged scale and looking down on the sheet and showing the construction of one corner of the foot portion or" the top sheet;
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken fromsubstantially along the line 5-5 in Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 but showing the position of the top sheet when occupied by a person and being taken substantially along the line 6-6 in Figure 2;
Figure 7 is a sectional View taken along the line 1-1 in Figure 4;
Figure 8 is a View showing a rectangular piece of cloth which is adapted to be folded to form a triangular gusset to be disposed between the corner portions of the sheet;
Figure 9 is a top plan view looking down on a blank before it is seamed together to form the sheet;
Figure 10 is a transverse sectional view through one side of th mattress taken along the line Ill-l0 in Figure 1, and showing the position occupied by the top sheet thereon when not occupied by a sleeper;
Figure 11 is a transverse sectional view of the right-hand portion of a mattress with a top sheet thereon taken along the line ll-l l in Figure 2, and showing the position of the lower or foot portion of the top sheet when an occupant is disposed between the top sheet and the mattress.
The mattress is shown in phantom lines throughout the drawings for purposes of clarity.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral l0 indicates the body portion of a top sheet having sid portions H and I2 which are cut away along the lines It, It, l5 and It at each side thereof to form a centrally disposed longitudinally extending portion i1 providing a foot wall l8 and a foot wall tab IS, the lines of out being identical on both sides of the sheet and like reference characters will apply thereto.
Some of the material which is cut away by the formation of the lines l4, l5 and It can be used and from which a rectangular piece of material 2| (Figure 8) can be out and folded along the line 22 to form corner gussets to be disposed as will hereinafter be explained.
The lines l4 and I5 define flaps at each edge of the longitudinally extending portion 11. It is to be noted that the height of the edges I5 and I6 is substantially greater than the height of the mattress M, preferably from one to two inches so as to allow foot room between the top sheet and the lower end of the mattress and to prevent cramping of the feet between the mattress and the pocket portion of the top sheet. Also, the angle between edges l5 and It is more than 90 degrees so that a line of fold 23 defining one end of the foot wall 18 has a greater length than a line of fold 24 defining the other end of the foot wall I8 and separating the same from the foot Wall tab l9, to thus give more foot room in the pocket.
After the blank has been out along the lines l3, l4, l5 and E6, the edges and it are conheated to each other by olverseaming and then the edges designated at Isa of the foot wall tab l9 are overseamed to the outer portions of the edges [4. These overseaming lines bear reference characters 25 and 28. When this is done, a triangular flap or gusset 2la formed from the rectangular piece of material 2! is overseanied to the edges i4 and the endmost edges of the foot wall tab it. The over-seaming between the triangular gusset Eict formed from the piece of material 2! are indicated at 2? and 28. After the gusset 2 la has been sewn in position by overseaming as at 27 and 28, a binding strip 3%] is sewed over the outer edge of the gusset 2 la and all along the edge of the foot Wall tab l?) and to the edges V It will be noted that due to the fact that the length of the lines it is substantially greater than the height of the mattress, there will he a surplus of material in the top sheet and this wiil overlap at the foot as indicated at and at the side portions as indicated at 3% on each side of the pocket. It will also be observed that due to the fact that the overseaming presents a roughened edge, this tends to hold th pocket in position over the mattress. Also the foot wall tab 19 is confined between the mattress and the sprin s, indicated at S, which support th mattress, and these two features prevent accidental displacement of the pocket from over the lower end of the mattress and at the same time provide a comfortable, well formed pocket at the lower end of the top sheet so that it is only necessary to straighten out the sheet and let it fall 4 downwardly on each side of the mattress and at the foot thereof in the making of a bed.
In the drawings and. specification, there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention bein defined in the claim.
I claim:
A covering for a mattress having a pocket for fitting over one end of said mattress and providing room for the feet of a person lying on the mattress; said covering including a central panel, side panels, an end panel, and a bottom panel; said covering being formed from a rectangular blank cut away by two lines of out to form a notch at each corner of one end of the blank; each of the lines of out being a continuous straight line and at their junction point forming an angle of more than the lines of cut defining the ends of the side panels being of substantially the same length as the lines of out defining the ends of the end panel, th bottom panel havin one of its side edges integral with the outer side edge of the end panel, and the bottom panel having its ends defined by lines of cut which are extensions of the lines of cut defining the ends of the end panel but extending parallel relation to each other and also being parallel to the longitudinal center of the blank, the ends of the side panels and th ends of the end panels being secured together and the ends of the bottom panel and the lower or outer edges of the side panels being secured together to form the mattress receiving pocket; said pocket having a top wall provided by a portion of the central panel, side walls, end wall and bottom wall; the bottom wall being of less dimension transversely of the covering than the top wall of said pocket.
