. Another object of the invention is to provide an ornamental dialer crown for a handle member which may be used to attract and fix attention on a display as for advertising, such as a mechanical pencil, a letter opener, or a fountain en.

Another object of the invention is to provide an ornamental dialer crown having a two-piece construction which may receive an advertising insert therebetween and which may be securely held together by cooperating elements of the dialer crown.

Other and further objects of the invention will be readily apparent from the following description and drawings, in which:

While this invention is suceptible of embodiment in many different forms, there is shown in the drawings and will herein be described in detail the preferred embodiment together with a modification thereof with the understanding that the present disclosure is to be considered as an exemplification of the principles of the invention and is not intended to limit the invention to the embodiments illustrated. The scope of the invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.

A dialer crown A embodying my invention is shown in Fig. 1 mounted in a mechanical pencil B and in use as a dialer crown in cooperation with the dial portion of an automatic dial telephone C. The crown may be carried by any object which is suitable for use in. dialing a telephone and is not limited to use with a mechanical pencil. Other objects such as fountain pens, let- 2 ter openers or handle members for a variety of articles would be suitable for mounting the dialer crown of this invention.

The dialer crown, in its preferred embodiment as shown in Figs. 2 to 5, comprises a two-piece construction. Each section or segment may be made out of a transparent material or one section may be made of a colored opaque material such as cellulose acetate having pigment added thereto. A plastic material such as Lucite has been found to be a good material for the transparent portion of the dialer crown since it may be molded into the desired shapes and it has the desired transparency to enable printed matter carried within the crown to be seen. The dialer crown is of a size which will engage Within a finger hole on the dial telephone 0.

The first section comprises a face portion I and a base or leg portion 2 and the second section comprises a face portion 3 and a base or leg portion 4. Each of the face portions I and 3 are of a segmented spherical shape to provide a fiat outer face '5 for a purpose set forth more fully hereinafter.

The face portion 3 has a generally cylindrical raised projection or flange 6 which cooperates with a generally cylindrical recess 1 in the face portion 1 to provide a space therebetween in which a printed insert 8 may be placed. The provision of fiat outer faces 5 on the face portions of the dialer crown enables the printed matter carried within to be clearly seen without any distortion thereof.

Although the dimensions may vary and the following are not critical, a desirable dialer crown may be made wherein each face portion has a thickness of approximately .15 inch and the diameter of the face portions is approximately .53 inch. In this form the raised projection 6 may extend above the inner surface of the face portion approximately .02 inch and the recess 1 may have a depth of .04 inch. It is thus seen that, upon assembly of the face portions I and 3, a space of .02 inch is provided in which may be placed a small insert of paper or other material having printed matter thereon.

The projection 6 and recess 1 are of diameters which will insure a, tight fit therebetween. The cooperating projection and recess thus provides a suitable means for enclosing printed matter in a manner which will prevent dirt or other foreign matter reachin the insert and also securely hold the two face portions together.

Each of the leg portions 2 and 4 are lateral extensions of their respective face portions 1 3 and 3 and provide an additional registerin and locking means for the dialer crown as well as providing a means for telescopically mounting the dialer crown within a casing 9 of a mechanical pencil or any object having a generally cylindrical opening or chamber in the end thereof.

As will be clearly seen in Figs. 2 to 4, the leg portions are rounded in both directions so that, when assembled, the base of the assembled leg portions will have a generally rounded shape to facilitate insertion of the dialer crown within the cylindrical chamber 9.

The leg portion 4 has a raised generally cylindrical lug I 9 which is shaped to closely fit within a generally cylindrical recess II provided in the leg portion 2. The lug Ill may be equal in height to the depth of the recess I I or, as shownin-Figs. 3 and 5, may extend only part way into the recess. The lug I9 and recess I I act to register and securely lock the face portions I and 3 in the .proper relation with .respect to each other.

'Mynew'and improved dialer crown is of a construction which may be die-molded inlarge quantities at a low cost per unit. It is necessary to provide a structure having two parts in orderto place an insert therein or to permit recessed indiciatobe stamped on the inner faces of the face portions. In my invention one piece of the icrown'has the raised projection 6 and the lug I9 while the other piece has the recesses I and II.

These elements-and recesses may be provided-by propershaping-of the molds and no subsequent operations are required.

Another embodiment of the invention is shown in Figs. 6 and .7 wherein the dialer crown is generally similar to thatshown in Figs. 2 to Shut in which the interfitting parts on the face portions are somewhat different in their construction as are the interfitting parts on the laterally extending legportions. Those parts in the two embodiments which are generally similar are identified by the same referencecharacters.

The face portion 3 has peripherally spaced raised pips or projections If on its inner face which engage within peripherally spaced depres- .sions IS in the face portion I. The pips I2 and depressions I3 are tightly fitted together and co- .operateto hold the two face portions together and against rotation relative to each other. A lug I Iv on theleg portion 4 cooperates with a recess I5 in the leg portion 2 to ensure the locking of the twopieces of the dialer crown against rotation.

In this form of the invention it is preferable toprovide a generally cylindrical recess I6 in one of the face portions of a depth and diameter adequate to hold an insert carrying printed matter. This recess I6 is provided in face portion I.

The number of pips I2 and depressions I3 carried by the face portions 9 and I, respectively, is not critical; however, it has been found that three pips with their cooperating depressions are satisfactory to securely hold the two pieces of the dialer crown together.

In this form of the invention the lug I4 and its cooperatingrecess i5 carried by the leg portion 2 may extend entirely across the width of the leg portion.

I claim:

1. A dialer crown mounted in a mechanical pencil or other carrier member having a cylindrical opening in the end thereoffor'use in dialing a telephone comprising, in combination, two

sections each having a face portion which has a segmental spherical shape and a laterally extending leg portion, at least one of said sections being transparent, one of said face portions having a substantially cylindrical raised flange thereon, the other face portion having a recess therein of a diameter to receive and tightly grip the flange, the recess being of a depth sufficient to provide a space for an insert between the base of the recess and the outer face of the flange, an insert having printed matter mounted in said recess, and one of said leg portions having a registering recess therein and the other leg portion having a'lug-thereon for engagement in the registering recess to register the sections and lock them against relative movement, said leg portions being adapted for mounting telescopically within the end of said mechanical pencil 'or other carrier member.

2. A dialer crown mounted in a mechanical pencil or other carrier member comprising, two sections eachhaving a face portion with a fiat outer face and a laterally extending'leg portion adapted-to fit in the pencil or other carriermemher, at least one of said sections being transparent, one-of said'face portions having a substantially cylindrical raised flange on its inner face, the other face portion having a recess therein of a diameter to receive and tightly grip the flange, the recess being of a depth sufficient to provide a space for an insert between the base of the recess and the outer face of the flange,

and means on said leg portions to register :the sections and lock them against relative movement.

3. A dialer crown carried on a mechanical pencil or other implement comprising, two sections each having a face portion which has .-a segmented spherical shape, at least one of said sections being transparent, one of said face portions having a substantially cylindrical raised flange thereon, the other face having a recess therein of a diameter'to receive and tightly grip the flange and of a depth greater than the height of the flange to provide an insert receiving space between the base of the recess and the flange, and means for attaching said face portions to a mechanical pencil or other implement.
