Description
NOV. 23, 1954 w GRAHAM TOILET PAPER HOLDER Filed July 18, 1951 V INVENTOR. RICHARD mums GRAHAM AT TOR/V5) United States Patent TOILET PAPER HOLDER Richard Wayne Graham, Williamstown, W. Va.
Application July 18, 1951, Serial No. 237,451
1 Claim. (Cl. 312-39) The present invention relates to a toilet paper holder and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a toilet paper holder which consists of a base member having a vertical rear wall and an integrally formed bottom wall and a cover member which is formed of a single piece of plastic material and which comprises a top, a front wall and a pair of side walls. The base is also preferably formed of plastic material and is provided adjacent its upper end with a pair of lugs which are provided with grooves for the reception of pins carried by the cover. The bottom of the base is provided at its forward portion with a pair of roll stop members and with grooves for the reception of lower pins which are carried by the cover. The forward end of the bottom and the bottom edge of the front wall are each serrated to form cutting teeth. One feature of the invention is that the lower edge of the forward wall overlaps for an appreciable distance the bottom of the base so that paper cut by the forward wall will still leave a portion which may be grasped by the fingers of the user, such portion being advantageous in the withdrawing of further paper from a roll of paper which is adapted to be contained within the device. Another feature of the invention is the provision of a cantilever spring afiixed to the inner side of the forward wall of the cover and having mounted therein a tension roller which is adapted to bear against the top of the bottom wall of the base when the device is in assembled condition.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which may be formed of but two principal parts and which parts may be wholly formed of plastic material.
Another object of the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of novel paper tensioning means forming a part of the invention.
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel locking means, in a device of the character set forth, for interlocking a base and a cover both forming parts of the invention.
Still another object of the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of novel roll stop lugs forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure l is a erspective view of an embodiment of the invention in fully assembled condition,
Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view illustrating the principal parts of the invention,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken along line 44 of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is an enlar ed fragmentary sectional view taken along line 55 of Figure 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a base member having a vertically extending rear wall and an integrally formed forwardly extending bottom wall 11. The rear wall 10 is provided with four holes 12 which extend therethrough and provide a means for the reception of fastening screws or the like 13 whereby the same may be affixed to a building wall 14.
At the upper end of each side of the rear wall 10 there is provided an outstanding lug or ears 15 each of which is provided with a pin lock groove 16, the ears 15 being See formed integrally with the wall 10. Adjacent the forward edge of the bottom wall 11 there is integrally formed upon either side thereof an upstanding ear 17 in the inner upper portion of each of which is pressed a roll stop lug 18 and in the outer lower edge of which is formed a lower lock pin groove 19.
There is also provided a cover having atop wall 20, a vertically dependent front wall 21 and a'pair of vertical side walls 22, such members 20, 21 and 22 all being formedof a single piece of material. Inwardly extending from the .upper inner portions of each of the side .walls 22' is a lock pin 23'which is adapted-to be received-inone of the grooves 16 and a lock pin 24 projects inwardly from the lower front portion of each of the side walls 22 and is adapted to be received in one of the grooves 19.
Afiixed by rivets 25 or the like to the inner side of the lower portion of the front wall 21 and extending downwardly and inwardly therefrom is a cantilever spring 26 having an integrally formed outwardly extending portion at each end thereof bent to form bearings 27 in which is revolubly mounted a shaft 28 to which is aflixed a roller 29 which extends between the bearings 27.
The forward edge of the bottom wall 11 is serrated, as indicated at 30 and the lower end of the front wall 21 is serrated as indicated at 31 and it will be seen that the lower end of the front wall 21 extends an appreciable distance below the bottom wall 11.
In operation, a roll of toilet paper, indicated at 32, is first placed upon the bottom wall 11 after which the cover is manipulated so that the pins 23 extend into the grooves 16 after which the forward portion of the cover is brought downwardly until the roller 29 comes into contact with the leading edge of the paper emanating from the roll 32 and thereafter the pins 24 are brought into the grooves 19 to thus securely hold the cover upon the base. Paper then may be pulled from the roll downwardlv between the serrated edges 30 and 31 until a desirable length thereof is had whereupon the paper may be torn from the roll by pulling the same upwardly against the teeth 31 or downwardly and rearwardly against the teeth 30. It is preferable, however. to tear the paper with an upward movement against the serrated edge 31 since such action will leave a small portion of paper remaining behind that portion of the front wall 21 which extends below the bottom wall 11 and which portion of paper may be grasped by the fingers of the user when it is desirgd to pull another length of paper from the roll 32. It will also be apparent that the forward movement of the roll 32 is limited by the roll stop lugs 18 against which the forward portion of the roll 32 will im inge if the roll should accidentally move too far forwardly. Likewise it will be seen that the tension of the sprin 26 will act to maintain the roller 29 against the upper side of the paper being dispensed to thus maintain the same at all times in a flat and unwrinkled condition.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein. it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A toilet paper holder comprising a base member havin a vertical wall portion adapted to be secured to a wall surface and a forwardly extending bottom wall portion. a front serrated edge, said vertical wall portion having spaced outstanding lugs with opposing pin lock grooves, said forwardly extending bottom wall portion havin external grooves at the respective opposite sides thereof, a cover member having a top wall, a vertically de ended front wall and vertical side walls, said cover side walls having opposing pins adapted to enter the pin lock grooves of the outstanding lugs on the vertical wall portion of the base member and other opposed pins adapted to enter the grooves on the bottom wall portion of the base member, upstanding ears on the bottom portion of the. base member having opposing roll stop lugs spaced vertically from the bottom of the base member, said front and vertical side walls extending below the forwardly extending bottom wall and said front wall having a serrated front edge, a rearwardly extending cantilever, spring means secured to the inside of said front Wall and the free end of said cantilever, spring means having a roller supported thereon lying under the roll stop lugs and engageable with paper. confined within the hoider extending. over the bottom wall of the base member toward the front edge thereof, said cantifever spring means and roller normally urging the cover member upwardly thereby biasing the pins on the cover member into the grooves of the base'member portions.
