MAGNETIC HANDLE CONNECTION Filed Sept. 28, 1949 INVENTOR. JEROME RUDY AT TORNE Y United States Patent C) MAGNETIC HANDLE CONNECTION Jerome Rudy, Bronx, N. Y.
Application September 28, 1949, Serial No. 118,239
1 Claim. (Cl. 306-1) This invention relates to a magnetic handle connection.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a household cleaning device wherein the same handle can be used for the different attachments and wherein the attachments are held and fixed to the handle by magnetic attraction between magnet or magnetizable parts employed upon the handle and the attachment.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a household device including a handle and attachments therefor wherein the connection of the attachment to the handle can be effected in an expeditious manner and without the need for a turning action to effect the coupling of the parts, but wherein the coupling action is effected by merely locating the attachment in the handle so that magnetic action takes over and couples the attachment to the handle in a tight manner and wherein the handle may be so formed with a sleeve as to enclose the magnetic or magnetizable pieces to provide for all appearances a standard household device with inseparable parts.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a household device comprising a handle and attachments therefor which are coupled with the handle by magnetic means, which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, has a minimum number of parts, compact, requires little space for the storage of the attachments and handle, convenient to use, and efficient in operation.
The advantages of this invention lie in the fact that the one stick or handle piece saves closet space and storing time and wherein a standard peg for the respective attachments will all fit the handle and the magnet having a standard opening therein. The magnetic principle makes easy the attaching and detaching of the attachments. With the handle being formed of plastic or aluminum tubing, it will be light in weight and less eort will be required to use the device. With the magnet being of stainless material and the handle and other parts being formed of aluminum, the device will not rust and will have long life. By the use of a pivoted magnetic pin on the combined brush and buffer attachment, the attachment can be easily and quickly inverted to use either the brush or the buffer.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference f may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a collective and perspective view of the device embodying the features of the present invention and showing a broom attachment separated from the handle.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View taken generally on line 2-2 of Fig. l, but with the attachment coupled to the handle.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a squeegee attachment adapted for use with the handle shown in Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a collective and perspective View of a handle and a mop attachment separated from one another.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a device for hanging the attachments upon a wall.
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view taken through a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view of a still further modified form of the invention.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a combined brush and buffer element which may be attached to the handle.
Referring now particularly to Figs. l to 5, 10 represents a handle which may be preferably made from aluminum or plastic material and which is light in weight. The lower end of the handle is open and fitted thereinto is a magnet 11. This magnet is made secure by crimping 2,697,642 Patented Dec. 21, 1954 the handle material into an annular recess on the magnet and in the manner as indicated at 12. This magnet 11 has a tapered opening or frusto-conical recess 13 into which may be projected a magnet or magnetizable piece 14 of either a broom 15, a squeegee 16 or a mop 17. The piece 14 is tapered or frusto-conical to fit the tapered opening 13 whereby to provide a tight but releasable fit and whereby to provide for the maximum effect of the magnetic action between the magnet 11 and the piece 14. The piece 14 has a threaded shank, as indicated at 18 for effecting its connection with the particular attachment. The handle sleeve is preferably made to project below the end face of the magnet 11 in order to receive the upper portion of the broom attachment to have a smooth connection therewith and its end face to rest upon a shoulder 19 thereof.
In the case of the squeegee 16, the piece 14 can be threaded directly into the squeegee which is formed of brass or other non-magnetizable material. The squeegee element or wiping portion 21 is secured to the squeegee body in the usual manner by means of pins 22.
The mop 17 has a magnet or magnetizable piece 23 which is pivoted by means of a pin 24 to a frame 25 of the mop. Depending from the frame 25 are the usual threads 26. The piece 23 has a tapered projection 27 adapted to enter the opening in the magnetic or magnetizable piece 11 of the handle 10.
In Fig. 6, there is shown a modified form of the invention wherein the magnetic means on the handle part includes a magnetic or magnetizable sleeve 28 which is secured to a wood handle portion 29 by a pin 31. Within this magnetic sleeve 28 is a magnet 32 having a tapered end 33. This magnet can be fixed to the end of the wood handle portion 29 by a fastening projection 34.
The broom part 15 has a magnetic or magnetizable piece 35 connected to its upper end by a threaded shank 36. This magnetic piece 3S is similarly tapered and has an end portion 37 adapted to engage the end portion 33 of the magnetic piece 32. The magnetic piece 32 will have magnetic attachment with the magnetic sleeve 28 so as to bridge a magnetic path to the side wall of the magnetic piece 35. Accordingly, a triple magnetic engagement is effected with this arrangement of the magnetic pieces 32 and 35 within the magnetic sleeve 28. The magnetic sleeve 28 extends sufficiently below the magnetic piece 32 as to fully encompass the magnetic piece 35 and the upper portion of the broom 1S.
In Fig. 7, there is shown a still further form of the invention, wherein the handle part 41 which is of hollow formation, made of aluminum or plastic and having a cylindrical-shaped magnet 42 fixed therein V/by means of a pin 43 extending transversely through the handle and the magnet. The magnet 42 is spaced a substantial distance from the open bottom end of the handle 41 and is adapted to receive a magnetic or magnetizable piece 44 which has threaded engagement with a brush attachment 45. Since the handle part is of non-magnetic material, the coupling action is effected magnetically primarily through the upper face of the magnetic or magnetizable piece 44 and the lower face of the magnetic or magnetizable piece 42. If both pieces are magnetic,
an added effect is had. Since the magnetic piece 44' enters the handle part 41, it is further mechanically held against lateral displacement relative to the lower end of the handle part 41 by its union therewithin.
To de-couple or separate the attachment from the handle part in each of the forms of the invention above related, the foot may be placed upon the attachment and a pull effected with the handle. The magnetic attractive force which, while it is great between the magnetic or magnetizable pieces, is not sufficient to withstand the sudden pull upon the handle while the attachment is being retained in a fixed position.
With the attachments removed from the handle part, they can be stored easily upon a holder 47, Fig. 5, having a magnetic piece 48 disposed across its lower end. The attachments will be abutted upon the magnetic piece 48 with its magnetic piece and will remain suspended from the holder until pulled therefrom.
The squeegee 16 can be provided with a magnetizable piece 16' on one end which can be attached to the magnet 48 so that the squeegee can be suspended in a manner so as not to consume great space and angled from the position shown in Fig. 5. This magnetizable piece 16 is indicated clearly in Figs. 3 and 5. There is also provided upon the pegs 14 holes 14 by which the attachments can be suspended from nails on a wall.
In Fig. 8, there is shown the combined brush and buffer attachment. This attachment has a main ,plate 51 with a slot 52 in one edge of the same and across which extends a pin 54 on which magnetizable peg 55 is pivoted. The plate 51 has brush bristles 56 depending from the same and a buffer cloth 57 on the top thereof. Inasmuch as the peg S5 can be adjusted through the opening 52, the combined brush and buffer can be easily and quickly inverted to apply either the brush or the buffer.
Not only can the buffer and waxer attachment be applied, but a good many'other types of attachments, such as a liioor scrubber, a sponge, a parlor broom, a carpet sweeper, ksilent butler or window washer. The invention eliminates the need for screws or other elements which would be necessary for the effecting of a handle within an attachment not utilizing my magnetic lifting principle.
While several different types of attachments have been shown, it will be apparent that any further types of attachments can be used with this handle. A long feathertype brush, as indicated at 49, might be used.
It should be apparent that there has been provided a household device wherein the attachment can be connected to the handle part with little eort and similarly disconnected. The device is of simple construction and has a minimum number of parts and will have the same stiffness as an ordinary device without the separable feature and can be worked and used in the same manner.
It should be further apparent that the attachments being separable from the handle can be more readily stored `and will consume little space in the storage closet.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A household device comprising a handle formed of non-magnetic material and having an open sleeve portion at one end thereof with an end face thereon, a magnet secured within the sleeve portion spaced inwardly of the end face thereof, said magnet having a frusto-conical recess accessible through the end face of the sleeve portion, a releasable work element formed of nou-magnetic material, said work element having a projection extended into the sleeve portion of the handle and a shoulder engaged by the end face of the sleeve portion, and a frusto-conical member of magnetizable material having a shank secured in the Work element projection and conforming to and releasably fitted in the frusto-conical recess of the handle magnet, whereby to magnetically retain the work element in the handle against axial displacement therefrom.
