10 all whom it may concern Be it known that I,GEORGEA.1\IGARTHUR, oi the city of Chicago, county of (look, and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Door-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a device for holding doors back against walls of houses, railroadcars, and like structures, and one that shall be at once simple and inexpensiveiuconstruction,desirable,willoperate with but little noise, and will produce no unpleasantjarring. I have accomplished this object byadevice composed of two partsone an entering rigid catch, the other an embracing spring-catcheither one of which may be attached to the door and the other to the floor or wall, both of which will be fully described hereinafter, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1, 2, 8, 5, and 6 represent perspective views of the parts in difl'erent positions; and Fig. 4, a sectional plan or sectional top view of the two devices together in position to hold the door, the broken linesindicathg their appearance in the act of coming into position, and also of a rubber buffer, is, seated within the body ot'the spring-catch B, which is shown in horizontal section.

Theentering device A,when designed to be fastened to the floor, has the form shown in Fig. l, but when designed to be fastened to the wall has the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6. This modification is in the support merely for the head D, with its neck a, which is the operative part, the supports in either case being attached by means of screws, as shown.

B is the embracing spring-catch, having the body F and the jaws l l, which are bent near each end into curred shouldersecto correspond with and fit into the sides of the neck aof the entering device A, and below each jaw in the body F are slotsff for the insertion of screws I m m, which may be turned into and out of the pad or block 7c, in order to increase or dimin- 5 ish the tension of thejaws l I, so as to increase or diminish the force with which they will resist the entrance of and hold the head D when driven home between. them. These slots are necessary to allow the tension of thejaws to 0 be regulated, as specified, and that tension can be regulated to meet the requirements of doors of difl'erent weights.

In case a door shall be thrown back with great force, the point of the head 'D may be 5 driven against the pad 7.", and be stopped by it without shock or noise; but when the door is thrown back with ordinary force that force will be nearly or quite exhausted by the resistance offeredby the jaws-l lduring the pas- 6o sage of the cuneiform head D between them up to the neck a, where their own shoulders c 0 will receive any remaining unexpended force.

Both parts may be made of any suitable metal or other material; but the partB should be made of material that will afford the required elasticity. The screws m mare turned into the wall or door to hold the part B fast to the same, and to compress thejaws llmore or less, according to the requirements of the case, but that part will operate without the buffer is, which therefore is not essential.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The embracing device B, having jaws Z l, and provided with slotsff to allow the tension of the jaws to be regulated by means of the screws in m, substantially as described.
