Description

Feb. l5, 1955 F. G. BROWN ET AL DUST COLLECTOR FOR USE IN OVERHEAD DRILLING Filed May 8, 1952 INVENTORS DUST CLLECTOR FR USE IN OVERHEAD DRILLING Forrest G. Brown, Pound, Va., and Benjamin F. Gish, Seco, Ky.
Application May 8, 1952, Serial No. 286,850
1 Claim. (Cl. Z55-50) This invention relates to a dust collector for use in overhead drilling.
The invention is more particularly concerned with a device for collecting or trapping dust in drilling holes in the roof of a coal mine which dust is not only annoying but is injurious to the health of operators.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a drill traversing dust collector in the form of a vertically elongated and collapsible bag having one end thereof for dust scaling engagement with a roof or ceiling in which a vertical hole is being drilled.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above noted character which is relatively simple in construction and which is capable of being expeditiously positioned for use and which is further capable of ready discharge of collected dust therefrom.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent in the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein- Fig. l is a vertical axial section of the improved dust collector in accordance with a preferred structural embodiment thereof.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the top plate with the rubber seal ring supported thereon.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view in the plane of line 3-3 on Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of the bag in partially collapsed condition.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, the improved dust collector is illustrated in Figs. l and 4 as being operatively associated with a drill including a nose N from which projects an elongated shank S having on the free end thereof a bit B for drilling a vertical hole H in the roof R of a coal mine.
It is however, to be understood that the dust collector is equally applicable for use with drills for providing vertical holes in roofs or ceilings other than in coal mines.
The improved dust collector is designated as a whole by the reference character and which includes an elongated open ended canvas bag 11, a top plate 12, a roof engageable rubber sealing ring 13, a bottom plate 14, a rubber sealing washer and a coil spring 16.
The upper edge of the bag 11 is secured to the periphery of the top plate 12 by any suitable means as is indicated at 17 in Fig. 2 and the lower edge thereof is secured to the bottom plate 14 by any suitable means as is indicated at 18 in Fig. 2.
The sealing ring 13 which is preferably semi-cylindrical in cross section is suitably secured to the top plate 12 and preferably with the i'lat side thereof engaged with the plate as shown in Fig. l.
Likewise the rubber sealing washer 15 is secured to the inner face of the bottom plate 14 as by means of rivets or the like 19 as indicated in Fig. 3.
The top plate 12 is of skeleton form providing a central drill shank receiving opening 20 and a plurality of relatively large dust admitting openings 21.
The lower plate 14 is adapted to seat on the drill nose N and is provided with a drill shank receiving opening 22.
The rubber dust sealing washer 15 is provided with a center hole 23 of less diameter than hole 22 whereby the edge of hole 23 has a frictional wiping engagement with atent the drill shank S to prevent escape of dust through the drill shank receiving hole 22. The coil spring 16 is disposed within the bag with its opposite ends bearing against the top and bottom plates 12 and 14 and the spring normally retains the bag in a distended position as shown in Fig. 1.
In the use of the improved dust collector, the drill shank S is passed through openings 22 and 23 in plate 14 and washer 15 respectively, through the bag, and then through opening 20 in the top plate 12.
The drill bit B then upon operation of the drill provides a vertical hole H in the roof R.
In the drilling operation the bit B advances vertically upwardly into the roof R and dust formed in the drilling operation drops through the openings 21 in the top plate and into the bag 11.
The sealing ring 13 engages the roof R and prevents escape of dust and the ring further spaces the top plate from the roof to permit the dust to enter the openings 21.
As the drilling progresses, the distance between the drill neck N and the roof R becomes gradually less whereby the spring 16 is compressed and the bag 11 collapses, providing edge folds 11 as indicated in Fig. 2 and the neck N may approach the roof R to a point wherein the springi 16 is fully compressed and the bag wholly collapse When the drilling operation is completed, the spring land bag will expand with retraction of the drill after which the collected dust may readily be discharged through the openings 21 in the top plate 12.
The top and bottom plates 12 and 14 respectively having the drill shank receiving openings 20 and 22 respectively provide for support of the bag on the drill shank S in concentric relation thereto, the sealing ring 13 provides a dustproof connection between the upper end of the bag and the roof R when the bag is in operative position and the openings 21 provide for passage of dust into the bag.
The rubber sealing ring 15 provides for retention of the collected dust in the bag while in its operative position of Fig. l since the ring material surrounding the opening 23 has a tight wiping action on the drill shank S.
While we have disclosed our invention in accordance with a single structural embodiment thereof, such is to be considered as illustrative only and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being dened in the subjoined claim.
What we claim and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is:
A dust collector comprising an elongated drill shank traversable open ended bag, top and bottom ilat circular plates having their peripheries disposed within and secured to the top and bottom end edges of the bag, a coil spring disposed within the bag and having its opposite ends engaged with said plates for normally distending the bag, said plates having axially aligned drill shank receiving openings centrally thereof, the top plate comprising a hub portion in which the respective drill shank receiving opening is disposed, a relatively narrow rim portion, and spoke-like portions interconnecting the hub and rim portions providing relatively large dust admitting openings, a roof engageable dust sealing ring supported on the outer face of said rim portion and secured thereto, and a flat drill shank engageable washer supported on the inner face of the bottom plate and provided with a drill shank receiving opening normally of less diameter than the opening in said top plate, whereby the portion of said Washer surrounding the opening therein has a frictional-wiping engagement with said shank for precluding escape of collected dust from the bag when in its vertical operative position.
