Application September 19, 1952, Serial No. 310,527
4 Claims. (Cl. 155-1) This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in barber chairs, dentist chairs, etc., and the principal object of the invention is to provide cooling means for the occupant of the chair to assure his comfort in hot weather.
The above object is achieved by the provision of a plenum chamber in the back rest of the chair, the back rest having a foraminous front wall whereby air delivered under pressure in the plenum chamber may be discharged around the occupant.
Another feature of the invention involves the provision of an air outlet grill at the back of the back rest for discharging air under the usual cloth utilized by barbers for catching hair.
An additional feature of the invention involves the provision of a heating element whereby the stream of air may be kept warm in cold weather.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barber chair equipped with the invention;.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view thereof, taken substantially in the plane of the line 22 in Figure 3;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary rear elevational view of the chair, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of the blower and heating element used in the invention.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the barber chair, or the like, is designated generally by the reference character and embodies in its construction the usual pedestal 12, a seat 14 and a back rest 16.
The back rest 16 is hollow so as to afford therein a plenum chamber 18, the latter having a foraminous front wall 20 at the front of the back rest, as is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Also, a relatively small outlet grill 22 is provided at the back of the back rest 16 in communication with the plenum chamber 18 for discharging air under the usual cloth which the barber places around a patrons neck.
A suitable blower 24, driven by an electric motor 26, is secured by a bracket 28 to the underside of the seat 14. The outlet 30 of the blower is connected by a flexible duct 32 to the plenum chamber 18 in the back rest 16.
The motor 26 receives its supply of electricity through an extension cord 34 and is connected in series by a conductor 36 with a convenient switch 38 provided on the back rest 16. An outlet plug 40 is provided on the back rest 16 adjacent the switch 38 so that hair clippers, or the like, may be connected thereto.
A flexible tube 42 is connected at one end thereof to the duct 32 and extends upwardly through the chamber 18, having its outlet 44 at the top of the back rest. A flexible air hose 46 is slidably telescoped in the tube 42 and may be withdrawn from the outlet 44 for connection to appliances such as hair driers, air blowers, etc. When not in use, the hose 46 may be closed by a suitable plug, (not shown).
Finally, an electric heating element 47, receiving its supply of electricity through a conductor 48, may be installed in the duct 32 or outlet 30 of the blower as shown in Figure 4 to warm the air during cold weather.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a barber chair, the combination of a seat, a hollow back rest afiording a plenum chamber therein, said chamber having a foraminous wall at the front of the back rest, an air outlet grill provided at the back of the back rest in communication with said chamber, a motor driven blower secured to the underside of said seat, and a flexible duct extending from said blower to said chamber, a heating element in said duct, an air tube connected at one end thereof to said duct and extending through said chamber, said tube having an outlet at the top of said back rest, a flexible air hose slidably telescoped in said air tube and projecting outwardly from the outlet thereof.
2. In a barber chair, the combination of a seat, a hollow back rest having a plenum chamber therein, a. foraminous covering on the front of said back rest communicating with said plenum chamber, a blower secured to the chair beneath said back rest, a flexible duct communicating said blower with said chamber, an air tube opening at one end thereof into said duct, said tube extending through said chamber and having its other end opening into the top of said back rest.
3. In a barber chair, the combination of a seat, a hollow back rest having a plenum chamber therein, a foraminous covering on the front of said back rest communicating with said plenum chamber, a blower secured to the chair beneath said back rest, a flexible duct communicating said blower with said chamber, an air tube opening at one end thereof into said duct, said tube extending through said chamber and having its other end opening into the top of said back rest, and a flexible air hose slidably telescoped in said tube and projecting outwardly through said other end of said tube.
:4. In a barber chair, the combination of a seat, a hollow back rest having a plenum chamber therein, a foraminous covering on the front of said back rest communicating with said plenum chamber, a blower secured to the chair beneath said back rest, a flexible duct communicating said blower with said chamber, an air tube opening at one end thereof into said duct, said tube extending through said chamber and having its other end opening into the top of said back rest, and a heating element in said duct.
