Description

March 22, 1955 T. T. ARNOLD ARTICLE OF HEADWEAR Filed on. 15. 1952 Thomas 7? Arnold INVENTOR.
I M Attorneys United States Patent ARTICLE OF HEADWEAR Thomas T. Arnold, Jacksonville, Fla.
Application October 13, 1952, Serial No. 314,444
1 Claim. (Cl. 2-198) This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in headwear, particularly caps, and the principal object of the invention 1s to provide a novel cap including a handkerchief style head covering portion and a visor equipped with a removable stiffening anel.
p Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of a head encircling band for sustaining the cap in position on the head, the arrangement of the band being coordinated with the structure of the visor.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its pleasing appearance and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an underside perspective view of the 1nvention;
Figure 2 is a front perspective view thereof;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3-3 in Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective detail illustrating the entrance to the visor pocket in a partly open position.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of an article of headwear which is designated generally by the reference character and embodies in its construction a handkerchief style portion 12 which is adapted to cover the head and depend downwardly therefrom at the back, while a hollow visor 14 is provided at the front of the cap, as shown.
The visor consists of upper and lower walls 16, 18 respectively which define therebetween a pocket 20 for a removable stiffener panel 22. This pocket has an entrance opening at the back edge of the visor, whereby the stiffener panel may be removed or replaced, as desired.
A band 24 is conncted to or formed integrally with the top wall 16 of the visor, while a similar band 26 is connected to or formed integrally with the bottom wall 18. The bands 24, 26 are disposed at the entrance of the pocket 20 and the band 24 is stitched to the portion 12 as indicated at 30 so that the band 24 constitutes the front region of the portion 12. The band 26 underlies the band 24 as shown.
The band 24 is provided with a plurality of spaced, vertical slits 32 which afford passages for elastic strap 36, the latter being equipped with suitable buckles 38, or the like, and being adapted to encircle the head, so as to sustain the cap in position. It will be noted that by virtue of the passages 32, the strip 36 is threaded in and out of the band 24, so that longitudinally spaced portions of the strip are exposed at the front of the band, while the intervening, longitudinally spaced portions of the strip are disposed between the two bands 24, 26.
A sweat band 40 underlies the band 26 and has a doubled lower portion 40a which carries a plurality of snap fastener elements 42. These fastener elements extend through apertures 44 provided in the band 26 and are separably engaged with coacting fastener elements 46 provided on the inside of the band 24. In this manner, the fastener elements 42, 46 constitute a closure for the entrance of the pocket 20, and by simply removing the sweat band 40 upon separation of the elements 42, 46, the entrance to the pocket may be opened and the stiffener panel 22 removed or replaced, as desired.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in'the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
An article of headwear comprising a head covering portion, a hollow visor having upper and lower walls and defining a pocket having an entrance at the back edge of the visor, an upper band attached to the upper wall of the visor at the entrance to said pocket, said head covering portion having a front region secured to the band on the upper wall of the visor, a lower band attached to the lower wall of the visor at the entrance to said pocket and underlying said front region of the head covering portion, a removable visor panel disposed in said pocket, a strap attached to said upper band for encircling the wearers head, closure means for detachably connecting said bands together, and a sweat band underlying said lower band, said closure means comprising a set of fastening elements provided on said upper band, and a set of coacting fastening elements provided on said sweat band, said lower band having a plurality of apertures the fastening elements in one set extending through the apertures in said lower band and engaging the fastening elements of the other set.
