United States Patent VENTILATED RIDGE ROLL John Bonforte, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Application April 2, 1952, Serial No. 280,115
1 Claim. (CI. 98-42) This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in ventilated ridge rolls, particularly devices of this character and which may be in stalled on the ridge of roofs of houses and similar other buildings, and the principal object of this invention is to provide a device of the character herein described which will etficiently and simply ventilate the attic.
An important feature of the invention resides in ts simplicity of construction whereby the ridge roll lends itself to efficient and economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is fragmentary perspective view illustrating the invention installed on the ridge of a roof;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the plane of the line 22 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the plane of the line 33 of Figure 2; and,
Figure 4 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 2.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a ventilated ridge roll which is designated generally by the reference numeral 20 and comprises an elongated shell 22 having an open bottom 24 and including a pair of spaced side walls 26 which are provided at their lower edges with outturned flanges 28 for mounting on the ridge of a roof 30 by means of suitable fasteners 32. The ridge roll is so mounted as to have the opening 24 at the bottom thereof in register with an opening 34 in the ridge of the roof, and the shell 22 also includes a pair of laterally projecting, downwardly sloping intermediate walls 36 having a plurality of ventilating openings 38 provided therein.
In addition, the shell 22 includes a dome-shaped top wall 40 which has angulated lower edge portions 42 superposed on the outer edge portions of the intermediate walls 136, and suitably secured thereto by tacking 44, or the li e.
A foraminous sheet such as a screen 46 has its opposite side edges interposed between the portions 42 of the top wall 40 and the marginal edge portions of the intermediate wall 36, this screen extending over the vent openings 38 and also over the space between the side walls 26, as is best shown in Figure 2.
The marginal edge portions of the screen 46 are secured between the portions 42 of the top wall 40 and the intermediate walls 36 by the same tacking 44 used for securing the top and intermediate walls together, and it will be apparent from the foregoing that when the device is assembled as shown in Figures 1 and 2, proper and adequate ventilation will be facilitated through the openings 34, 24 and 38 which afford communication between the attic under the roof 30 and the outside atmosphere.
Moreover, it is to be noted that by virtue of the particular configuration of the shell 22, rain or moisture will not be permitted to gain access through the openings 38, while adequate ventilating facilities are provided.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be readily apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new 1s:
A ventilated ridge roll having an open bottom and including a pair of spaced side walls, said ventilated ridge roll further comprising laterally extending and downwardly sloping intermediate walls provided at the upper edges of said side walls and formed with a plurality of vent openings, and a dome-shaped top wall having angulated lower edge portions extending parallel with, superposed on, and connected to outer edge portions of the intermediate walls, said intermediate walls underlying said top wall, a screen having opposite side edge portions thereof interposed between the superposed top wall portions and intermediate wall outer edge portions, said screen extending over said openings and over the space between said side walls, and fasteners extending between said outer edge portions of said intermediate walls and the angulated lower edge portions of said top wall and through said screen securing said screen in position.
