13 Ciaims. {(7 155-44) This invention relates to baby bed and chair combinations, and more particularly to a combination baby bed and chair combination designed for use in automobiles, as well as elsewhere, and it has among its salient objects:

To provide a simplified combination construction which can be easily and quickly converted from one to the other with a minimum amount of work and without any tools;

To provide such a combination bed and chair having an unjointed, rectangular top frame member, from which the bed proper is suspended, and which frame member can be moved bodily to an inclined position, with few adjustments, for converting the bed into a chair for the child;

To provide in combination with such a bed and chair, a special form of pad or cushion, including a number of hingedly connected parts or pads, whereby said special pad or cushion can be adapted to either the bed form of the invention, or to the chair form thereof;

To provide in combination with a top rectangular frame for suspending a bed therein, pivotally connected bail-like members which can be adjusted to different positions thereunder and yieldingly held in place without the use of the usual hinged brace members in the angles formed between frame members;

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description of one practical embodiment thereof, taken with the accom' panying two sheets of drawings, in which:

Figure l is a perspective view of the invention, set up as a bed, with parts broken out, and showing the usual supporting hooks for supporting the bed on the back of an automobile seat;

Figure 2 is a flat view of a special pad or cushion designed to be used in either the bed form, or the chair form, of the invention;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary side view of the frame members to show possible adjustments and interlocking means;

Figure 4 is a detail of parts seen from line 4-4, Fig. 3;

Figure 5 is a perspective of the invention set up as a chair, and showing the pad or cushion in place thereon;

Figure 6 is a fragmentary side view of frame members to show adjustments and connections when set up as a chair;

Figure 7 is a fragmentary view of detai s, as seen from line 7-7 on Fig. 6; and

Figure 8 is a detail in section, taken on line 8-53, Fig. 7.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, a main, unjointcd rectangular frame member 19, forms the top frame member for the bed form. of the invention, as seen in Fig. 1; and it also forms the main inclined supporting frame member for the chair form of the invention, s seen in Fig. 5. To have a rigid, unjointed frame member for these two major positions is a real advantage.

as 11', in its lower edge, and each also having an indent, as if, pressed inwardly toward said main frame member, for a purpose later referred to.

Pivotally connected near their two ends to said depending plates 11, ill, at the opposite sides of said main frame, are two U-shaped frame members, designated 12 and 12a, Fig. 3. The upper ends of said frame members 12, 121:, above their pivots f2, 12, are extended upwardly between said plates and the sides of said main frame member 10, whereby to be moved past said indents, as seen in Fig. 3, which indents prevent said frame members from being accidentally moved or folded under the main frame iii, the upper ends of said members, when in operating positions, resting between said indents and the adjacent rivets 10, as indicated in light broken lines in Fig. 3. Thus said supporting U-shaped frame members are held in their slightly inclined supporting positions, in the bed form of the invention, as seen in Fig. 1.

One of the U-shaped frame members 12, at the left, or foot, of Fig. 1, has connected therewith a wire frame, as 13, extended through the bottom cross member thereof and extended upwardly along the inner sides thereof, with its ends 13 bent to an angle, to be adjusted and inserted through holes 14, Bid, in the sides of said member 12, as indicated, whereby said wire frame can be extended downwardly, when desired, to raise that end of the bed, as indicated in light broken lines in Fig. 1.

At the other end of said bed form of the invention, the pivoted U-sl1aped frame member 12a, has a wire frame 15, pivotally connected at its upper ends, to the outer opposite sides of said member 12a, and has its lower cross or connecting portion 15 extended at its opposite ends, as at 15'', for a purpose later referred to.

Said U-shaped frame 1211, near its upper pivoted end, is also provided with a small stud 16, positioned to be moved into recess 11, in the plate 11, when said member 12a is swung under the bed, again referred to.

Pivotally connected to the side plates 11, to which the member 12 is pivotally connected, is a bail-like member 17, pivoted at 17', and adapted to be folded with the member 12 rearwardly under the chair form of the inven' tion, as seen in Fig. 5.

Also pivotally connected to the plate 111, at the other end of the main frame 10, and to which the member 12a is pivotally connected, is another bail-like member 18, pivoted at 18, and having its end extended beyond the pivot 18, to form kink lid" to underlie the stud 16, on the member 12a, as seen in Figs. 5 and. 6, whereby to hold said bail-iike member 18 in horizontal position, as a guard for the child seated in the chair.

Mounted on the opposite side members of the main frame 16, are two clips, as 19, provided. with holes, as l9, therethrough, as seen in Figs. 1 and 5. These clips are positioned to receive the extended short ends 15'', of the wire frame 15, seen in Fig. 1, in its down position, and seen in its raised operating position in Fig. 5, and also in Fig. 6. The cross member 15' of frame 15 forms a support for the front edge of the seat portion of the chair, as indicated in Fig. 5.

in Figs. 5 and 6, the lower cross end of the U-shaped member 12a, in its vertical position, and the correspond ing end of the U-shaped member 12, which is folded rearwardly under the chair form of the invention, are shown together, and the cross end portion of said member 12 is provided with a struck-out lip 19, to over-lie the lower cross portion of member 120, as indicated in Figs. 5, 6 and 8.

From the main rectangular frame it), is suspended a flexible fabric bed proper, as 29, of any suitable material, and is shown as, forming the bed in Figs. 1 and 3.

When folded into the form of a chair, as. seen in Fig. 5,

the U-shaped member 12 is folded under the chair, as is also the bail-like member 17, shown as underlying said member 12 in Fig. 5. Also, the free end of the wire frame 15 is swung upwardly, under the bed, and its short extended ends 15" are inserted through the holes 19 of the clips 19, on the opposite sides of the main frame ill, clearly shown in Fig. 6. The sides of said main frame 18, at the clips are sprung outwardly sufficiently to receive said short ends l", in the holes 19' in said clips 19, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, to support the front edge of the chair seat.

In Fig. 2, we have shown a unitary pad or cushion which can be easily adjusted in place in the bed, as indicated in light broken lines in Fig. 1. it can also be easily and quickly placed in the chair form of the invention, as indicated in Fig. 5. The different parts or pads of the unit are designated 21, 22,, 23 and and 25, in the chair form of the invention, as seen in Fig. 5, pad 21 is put over the upper end of the main frame lift, while the pad 22 forms the back, pad 23 the seat, and pad 24 is positioned to underlie the legs of the child in the chair. The side pads 25, 25, are hingedly connected for a part of their lengths, to the back pad 22, as indicated at 25, 25, whereby the ends not attached, can be folded upon themselves to form arm rests, as seen in Fig. 5.

In the bed form of the invention, said side members 25, 25, are shown at the opposite sides of the bed, near the head pad 25. Thus we have provided a unitary pad which is easily foldable and adjustable to the bed or the chair form of the invention, as illustrated.

At the foot end of the bed, we have shown the end of the bed bottom extended slightly, as at as, to support a covered board 27 to give length to the bed, when needed for larger children.

There is also provided an opening, as 24, in the attached edge of the pad 2d, through which a safety strap 26, can be passed to fasten to the bail-like member 18, as indicated in Fig. 5. Said strap 25 at its lower end is secured to the bottom of the bed fabric.

in the bottom of the bed 24), at the extended foot end thereof, we have shown a covered board, as 27, attached along one edge to the bottom fabric of the bed, with the other edge free so that it can be extended forwardly, as indicated. in Fig. 1.

We have also shown the usual supporting hooks, as 23, 28, for supporting said bed from the back of an autornobile seat in the usual and well known manner. These hooks can be attached in any desired manner, whereby to be used at the end of the bed, or at the side thereof, as may be desired, or as may be necessary, depending on the particular type and size of automobile.

Thus we have provided an improved baby bed and chair combination which can be easily converted from one to the other with a minimum of trouble or inconvenience. The front supporting member can be moved rearwardly to drop the front end and put the bed in an inclined position, the seat-supporting frame can be raised and easily attached at its opposite sides to the opposite sides of the main top frame, whereby it becomes the support for the front edge of the seat thus formed. We have also provided a unique and special cushion or pad, in sections hinged together and adapted to the bed or to the chair form of the invention to give form and firmness to the fabric bed body, and especially is it adaptable to the chair form of the invention, with the side pads foldable to provide arm rests in the manner shown and described.

Referring to Figs. 6 and 7, attention is called to the fact that the vertical supporting member 1201, and the main frame member lb tl member 15, form a triangle, as connected, which gives igidity to the structure. Also the lower side of the member 'lZa, in its cross or connecting portion, has formed therein an arch-like formation 12b which overlies the side of the wire frame 13, as seen in Fig. 7, thus holding the structure against lateral or sidewise movement. The struck-out lip 19, in the sup porting frame member 12, when folded under the structure as seen in Fig. 5, overlies the rearward supporting cross part of the member 12a. This prevents said member i214 from lifting away from the member 12, if the chair should be lifted by the top portion thereof. Frame members i2 and 32:1, by their cross or connecting portions are interlocked together to prevent lateral movement and also to prevent member from being lifted away from member 12.

We are aware, of course, that many changes can be made in the details of construction and arrangement without departing from the spirit of the invention, and we do not, therefore, limit our invention to the showing made for explanatory purposes, except as we may be limited by the hereto appended claims.

We claim:

1. A baby bed and chair combination including a top frame member, a fabric bed body suspended therefrom, two supporting frame members at its opposite ends for supporting the opposite ends of said top frame member, said supporting frame members being pivotally connected at their upper ends at the opposite sides of said top frame member, one of said supporting frame members being movable to a position under said bed frame, whereby to let that end of said bed frame down to an inclined position, and a pivoted frame having its ends pivotally connected with the other supporting frame member and its cross member movable up under the bed bottom to convert it into a seat, the free end of said frame being attachable at its opposite sides to the opposite sides of said top frame member, intermediate its ends, whereby to support the front edge of the seat thus formed.

2. A baby bed and chair combination as set forth in claim 1, also including a bail-like member having its ends pivotaily connected to one of said supporting frame members and adapted to form a guard loop across said top frame member, with means for holding it in position in chair formation.

3. A baby bed and chair combination as set forth in claim 1, which includes two bail-like members having their ends pivotally connected to top frame members at the opposite ends thereof, whereby to have their cross portions moved to positions above said top frame to serve as carrying handles for the bed.

4. A baby bed and chair combination as set forth in claim 1, including a special pad or cushion fitting into said fabric bed body to give form thereto and having pad portions to form back, seat and arm rest portions in the chair form of said invention, said pad portions being hingedly connected as a unit.

5. A baby bed and chair combination including a top frame, a fabric bed body suspended therefrom in horizontal position, two pairs of pivot plates secured to the opposite sides of said top frame, near the opposite ends thereof, U-shaped supporting frames having their ends pivotally connected with said plates for supporting said top frame and bed at the opposite ends thereof, one of said U-shaped supporting frames being movable under said top frame to let its end thereof down into inclined position, a frame having its ends pivotally connected with the other U- shaped supporting frame and being movable up under said bed body to convert it into a chair form, the opposite sides of said frame being attachable to the opposite sides of said top frame, between the opposite ends thereof, whereby to support the front edge of the seat thus formed to convert said bed into a chair.

6. A baby bed and chair combination as set forth in claim 5 in which the pivotally connected ends of said U-shaped supporting frames are slightly extended beyond their pivots and between said top frame and said pivot plates, with means therebetween for engaging and yieldingly holding said extended ends in operating positions.

7. A baby bed and chair combination as set forth in claim 5, in which one of said U-shaped supporting frames is provided with an extension frame as a part thereof and adjustable relative to said U-shaped supporting frame for lengthening its supporting height.

8. A baby bed and chair combination as set forth in claim 5, including a special jointed pad fitting in said bed body and bendable to form back, seat and side arm rests as said bed is converted into its chair form. I

9. A baby bed and chair combination as set forth in claim 5, in which one of the U-shaped supporting frames, at its cross end portion is provided with means for interlocking with the cross end portion of the other U-shaped supporting member when said first U-shaped member is moved under said bed to lower said top frame into its inclined position.

10. A baby bed and chair combination, including a rigid rectangular frame, a bed body suspended therefrom, pivoted supporting members at each end of said frame for supporting it in horizontal position, one of said supporting members being foldable rearwardly under said bed to lower the end of said rectangular frame to an inclined position, a member pivoted to the other supporting member by its opposite ends, and having a cross middle portion under said bed and adapted to be connected with the opposite sides of said rectangular frame, to support the contiguous part of the bed as a seat, and means for holding the other pivoted supporting member and said folded supporting member in chair forming positions.

11. A baby bed and chair combination as set forth in claim 16, including a special sectional cushion fitting said bed body and foldable to form back, seat and sides for the chair form of said combination article.

12. A baby bed and chair combination, including a rigid rectangular frame, a bed body of fabric material suspended from said frame, two U-shaped supporting members having their ends pivotally connected with said frame with their cross portions on the floor, means operating on upper ends of said members for holding them in unfolded positions, one of said supporting members being foldable rearwardiy under said bed frame to lower the end thereof into an inclined position, means for interlocking the cross portions of said supporting members together in this folded condition to prevent unintentional separation, a seat supporting member pivoted to the other supporting member adapted at its opposite ends to be detachably connected with the op posite sides of said rectangular frame to support the front edge of the seat formed in the bed body thereby, and a sectional cushion in the bed body with the sections hingedly connected whereby to form back, seat and sides of the chair formed by the seat supporting member.

13. A baby bed and chair combination as set forth in claim 12, which includes a U-shaped frame member to form a guard around the front of said seat, with its rearward ends pivotally connected so as to be raised and lowered, with means for holding it in operating position.
