1 Claim. (Cl. 222-209) The present invention relates to an attachment for dispensing containers and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally the present invention consists of an attachment for a dispensing container such as an oil can or the like and essentially comprises a hollow bulb adapted to fit closely upon the upper end of the container. The bulb is provided with a centrally located aperture for the passage therethrough for the spout with which such containers are conventionally provided. The container is provided with a weakened portion which may be easily punched out with a pin or the like and the bulb is provided with a one-way air outlet valve adapted to be positioned immediately over such weakened portion in the container. The bulb is also provided upon its upper side with a one-way air inlet valve and the device is such that, when positioned atop a container as aforesaid, when the same is squeezed by the fingers of the user it will increase the air pressure within the container to thus provide a force whereby the liquid contents of the container may be forced therefrom in a substantially continuous stream when so desired.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and eflicient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel device having means for providing interior pressure to a dispensing container.
Another object is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a novel arrangement of valves forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of an embodiment of the invention illustrating the same in normal condition,
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l but showing the device as it appears when pressure is being supplied to a container forming a part of the invention,
Figure 3 is a plan view of the device illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view of a valve forming a part of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a conventional dispensing can containing a quantity of oil or other liquid as indicated at 11 and provided at its upper end with a permanent cover 12 which is aflixed to the container 10 by means of a conventional upwardly extending bead 13. The cover 12 is provided with a conventional dispensing spout 14 which is centrally disposed thereon.
The device comprising the present invention consists of a hollow body 15 formed of rubber or the like and having a contour adapted to fit snugly within the bead 13. The body is centrally provided with a passageway 16 for the reception therethrough of the spout 14, it being apparent that the passageway 16 is walled, as indicated at 17, to seal the same from the interior of the body 15.
The body 15 is provided with an upper wall 18 and a lower Wall 19.
A valve 20 is mounted in the upper wall 18 and is preferably used therein, as indicated at 21, and is provided in its upper side with an inlet opening 22 and in its lower side with an outlet opening 23. A flap valve 24 of rubber or the like is adapted to cover the opening 22 whenever interior pressure in the body 15 is greater than the atmospheric pressure without the body 15. The lower wall 19 is provided with a relatively large opening 25 which is adapted to register with an opening 26 in the cover 12 and it is contemplated that the cover 12 will be provided with a weakened portion which may be readily punched out to provide the opening 26.
In operation, it Will be apparent that the dispensing container 10 will be sold in fully sealed condition and that when it is desired to make the same ready for use that the opening 26 will first be formed therein and the free end of the spout 14 perforated, as indicated at 29, in conventional manner. The body 15 may then be mounted upon the cover 12 in such manner that the opening 25 registers with the opening 26 and it will be apparent that the body will remain in position due to frictional contact not only with the bead 13 but with the spout 14. When it is desired to dispense a quantity of the liquid 11 through the opening 29 in the spout 14, it is only necessary to press the upper Wall 18 toward the lower wall 19 thereby causing the valve 24 to close the opening 22 therein due to increased pressure momentarily formed within the body 15. This action will cause an increased pressure to be imparted to the interior of the container 10 due to air passing from the body 15 through the openings 25 and 26. With the assembled device in inverted position so that the liquid 11 will fill the spout 14 bygragity, it will be apparent that such increased pressure within the container 10 will act to force the liquid "therethrough in a stream for a period of appreciable duration. It will also be apparent that the flow of such stream of liquid may be made constant by repeatedly allowing the body 15 to reasstime its normal position and again squeezing the same as rapidly as possible.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising, in combination with a liquid dispensing container including a top having an opening therein, an upwardly extending beaded edge and an upwardly extending spout, the provision of a hollow body of flexible material adapted to fit on said top within said beaded edge and having a passageway for the reception therethrough of said spout and an opening adapted to register with the opening in said top, and an air inlet valve in said body.
