Description

Sept. 13, 1955 w A. MERRIFIELD MEANS FOR APPLYING ADHESIVES TO STRIPS OF PAPER Filed Nov. 1, 1952 NA/ENTUF WARD A. MERRIFIELD United States Patent MEANS FOR APPLYING ADHESIVES TO STRIPS OF PAPER Ward A. Merrifield, Salem, Oreg.
Application November 1, 1952, Serial No. 318,188
1 Claim. (Cl. 118-413) This invention relates generally to means for applying adhesive to strips of paper or other material.
The main object of this invention is to provide an applicator for adhesive by means of which the adhesive can be applied directly to a strip of paper as required.
The second object is to make it possible to apply the adhesive with a minimum amount of labor and tendency to smear.
The third object is to so construct the applicator that strips of various widths may be treated thereby.
I accomplish these and other objects in the manner set forth in the following specification as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken along the line 22 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section taken along the line 33 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan of the adjusting shoe, showing the hopper in section.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the adjusting shoe.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the adhesive strip applied to a pair of boards.
Like numbers of reference refer to the same or similrr parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing there is shown a base 10, on one end of which are mounted the two standards 11, which support a spindle 12 upon which is mounted a roll of paper 13 intended to be treated. At the opposite end of the base is disposed a hopper comprised of the sides 14 and the ends 15 and 16.
A slot 17 is formed in the bottom of the end 15 wide enough to receive the paper strip 18. It is not necessary to have this slot fit tightly in a lateral direction as the adhesive is quite stiff and will not flow through the slot 17 not occupied by the strip 18.
The end 16, however, has a somewhat larger opening 19 formed therein, in which is placed a U-shaped foot 20 which is urged downwardly by a spring 21 whose lower end bears against the lug 22 and its upper end engages a screw 23 whose position is determined by a nut 24. The
paper strip 18 is threaded through the slot 17 and under the foot 20.
The bottom 25 of the hopper includes a fixed plate 26 and a movable shoe 27 whose contacting edge 28 is inclined with relation to the edges 29 of the members 26 and 27, the spacings of which represent the width of the strip 18. i
The portions 30 and 31 of the members 26 and 27 are somewhat lower than are the main portions 26 and 27. The member 27 has a slotted end 32 which is occupied by a clamping screw 33 which is outside of the hopper itself.
The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to apply adhesive to a strip 18 it is merely threaded through the lower portions of the hopper as stated and a quantity of adhesive 34 is placed in the hopper 35. As the strip 18 is drawn across the tearing edges 36 the top surface of the paper is thoroughly and evenly covered with adhesive and all surplus is withheld before the strip 18 emerges from the hopper 35. The strip can then be torn off across the edge 36 and applied to the boards 37 in the usual manner.
When a strip of other width is to be used, the width of the space between the edges 29 is varied by moving the shoe 27. It can thus be seen that by this simple expedient it is possible for a mechanic to quickly and easily apply adhesive to a strip of paper with a minimum amount of effort.
I claim:
Means for applying adhesive to strips of paper comprised of a base having a flat top side, a hopper mounted over said base, a fixed plate mounted on said base extending through the front and rear walls of said hopper, the lateral edge of said fixed plate nearest the middle of the hopper being angled with relation to the longitudinal center line of the hopper, a movable shoe having parallel edges, one of which engages the angled side of said fixed plate, said shoe and plate having a paper receiving slot formed therein, the sides of which are parallel, means for selectively adjusting the longitudinal position of said shoe, a U-shaped foot on the lower end of the front hopper wall with the bottom of said foot resting upon a web of paper held within the slot on said shoe and said fixed plate, and a spring for urging said U-shaped foot toward said base.
