' GUMMED PAPER PRODUCTS Filed oct. 14, 195s BY /f/E. 2/
ATTORNEY United States Patent GUMMED PAPER PRODUCTS Leo Benedict Schram, Baton Rouge, La.
Application October 14, 1953, Serial No. 385,907
7 Claims. (Cl. 117--45) This invention relates generally to gummed paper products and more particularly to gummed paper labels which are afiixed to bottles and packages in retail trade outlets.
Paper labels, as utilized by druggists, are provided with a plain or printed front surface on which the druggist types theQrequired dosage information as directed by a physician. During the typing operation the label frequently becomes misaligned in the typewriter, making it necessary to discard one label and use another. This results in a loss of labels, but what is more important, it results in a loss of time to the druggist.
To meet the problem, numerous types of mechanical holders have been devised to firmly hold small pieces of papers, such as labels, in the typewriter to prevent them from becoming `misaligned, during a typing operation. The holders are a nuisance to use on typewriters and cause an undue Wear of the platen at the spot where label typing is accomplished.
The primary object of this invention is toprovide a gummed label or other paper product which is readily suitable to typing on a typewriter without the use of a mechanical holder and without the attendant misalignment problem of former label constructions.
A specific object of this invention is to provide a label with adhesives of different characteristics applied to one side thereof.
A further object of this invention is to provide a label with one adhesive applied to one surface thereof and an adhesive of different characteristics superposed on the first adhesive on limited areas of the first applied adhesive.
Another object of this invention is to provide a label with both moisture sensitve and pressure sensitive adhesives applied to one side of the label.
A still further specific object of this invention is to provide a label, having one surface coated with a moisture sensitive adhesive and with a coating of a pressure sensitive adhesive applied to limited areas of the same surface.
Another object of this invention is to provide a label, having one surface coated with a moisture sensitive adhesive, with a coating of a pressure sensitive adhesive applied in an uninterrupted manner so as to completely surround a major portion of the moisture sensitive surface.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention resides in the following specification and appended claims, certain embodiments and details of construction of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear plan view of a label incorporating the invention;
Figure 2 is an end view, exaggerated for illustrative purposes, of the label of Fig. 1
Figure 3 is an end view of a modified form of the label of Fig. 1;
Figure 4 is a rear plan view of a label according to a modified form of the invention; and
Figure 5 is a rear plan view of a label illustrating a still further modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to Figures 1 and 2, a label 1 of paper or other suitable sheet material is illustrated having an adhesive coating 2 applied to one surface thereof. Superposed on the coating 2 are two limited area coatings 3 and 4 of a second adhesive of different inherent characteristics from that adhesive forming coating 2. The coatings 3 and 4 are of relatively narrow width and run as stripes lengthwise of the label adjacent to but spaced from the upper and lower edges thereof.
In Figure 2 these coatings 3 and 4 are illustrated, along with layer 2, on an exaggerated scale as to depth of the coatings. y
The coating 2 is preferably formed by an application of a moisture sensitive adhesive to the paper label 1. Suitable adhesives for this purpose are dextrine gums or other suitable moisture sensitive adhesives.
The coatings 3 and 4 are formed by an application of a pressure sensitive adhesive to the adhesive coating 2 of label 1. Suitable adhesives for this purpose are those such as used on Scotchlite and Scotch tape or any other suitable pressure sensitive adhesive.
In Figure 3 is illustrated a label 1 having the coatings 5 and 6, similar to coatings 3 and 4 of Figs. 1 and 2, but applied by any suitable method coextensively with the coating 2 instead of being superposed thereon.
The pressure sensitive coating may be applied in various manners to the label 1. A desirable form is illustrated by Figure 4, in which the adhesive is applied at multiple spots 7. The primary consideration in producing this label is that the pressure sensitive coatingregardless of geometric contour-covers only a relatively minor portion of the area of the label.
Figure 5 illustrates a particular modified form of the invention in which a pressure sensitive adhesive coating 8 is applied to the coating 2 so as to surround a substantial surface area 9 of the label. The purpose of this configuration of coating 8 is to protect the area 9 from moisture while the label is in stacked or book form prior to use or after application to a package or bottle. Once applied to a bottle, for example, the area 9 of the label will be protected from moisture creeping under the edges of the label, tending to loosen the same, by the coating 8 which effectively acts as a dam. The actual shape of the coating 8, whether rectangular, square, circular, etc., is unimportant and generally would depend on the overall configuration of the label itself.
When it is desired to prepare a label for a bottle of medicine, for example, the druggist may insert a label of this invention in his typewriter with the adhesive coating contacting the platen of the machine. With a slight application of pressure, the label .will become affixed to the platen at such limited areas of the label where the pressure sensitive adhesive may have been applied. This pressure sensitive adhesive contact will hold the label aligned while the instructions for use of the bottles contents are typed on the front surface. After typing, the label is easily removed from the platen since only a limited portion of the rear surface was affixed to the platen by the pressure sensitive adhesive.
The whole rear surface of the label may then be moistened to activate the moisture sensitive adhesive so that the label may be firmly aflixed to a bottle or package. The pressure sensitive adhesive coacts with the moisture sensitive adhesive to secure the label to the bottle.
The purpose in utilizing a plurality of adhesives of different characteristics are as follows:
First: It is necessary to utilize an adhesive which will permit ready removal of the label from the typewriter platen. A pressure sensitive adhesive permits this, while a moisture sensitive adhesivewhen activated-would not.
Second: In the application of the label to a bottle or package, apressure sensitive adhesive, if used alone, would render the removal of the label too simple, and i-n rthe case of some drugs lrn'i-ght be dangerous. The use of a watersensitive adhesive makes removal yoi? the label from the bottle or package, with defamation less probable.
It is to be noted that in each of the modifications there is a margin setback from the edge to facilitate removal of the label from a typewriter platen by the mere insertion of a iingernail under the label.
-It is, therefore, obvious that this invention provides a useful improvement in labels which will reduce the usage of labels by reducing waste at the typewriter, as well as saving time for the typist. It is also obvious that the label of this invention may take many shapes, forms and usages which -are intended to be well within the scope of the appended claims, in which:
I claim:
1. A gummed product comprising a piece of sheet material, a coating of moisture sensitive adhesive applied to one surface of the sheet material and a coating of adhesive of the lpressure Asensitive type applied coextensively with said moisture sensitive adhesive to a limited area of the sheet material.
