BY WW 19 M J. KOSOVSKY TELLER'S BOX Nov. 1, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Dec. 29, 1952 1245 m m Wm VE 9 m av W E M K m n n P W J Y B United States Patent TELLERS BOX Joseph Kosovsky, Cleveland, Ohio Application December 29, 1952, Serial No. 328,315 3 Claims. (Cl; 312-310) The present invention relates to containers and more particularly relates to a tellers box to be used. by bank tellers and the like during the course of their employment.
It is the present practice in many banks toprovide each teller with a tray having a partitioned: bottom in which bills of various denominations may beplaced; and which the teller usually places by the window to make change,
cash checks, distribute pay rolls and the; like. With this' set-up, there is no provision for protecting the money while the teller is at lunch, checking finance recordsor carrying out other duties which take him away from the tellers window and no means is provided. for protecting the money in the tray. Thus, unscrupulous customers may easily extract money from the tray and it is: necessary when the teller leaves the Window that he move the tray to some inaccessible position, preferably both out of sight and out of reach from the tellers window. Also, with this set-up, no means is provided for maintaining the tray at various angled positions for the convenience of the teller and' the same usually rests flat upon the tellers desk.
Primarily, the object of this invention is to provide a box in which the tellers tray may be swingably mounted and supported at various elevated'positi'ons, which box may be locked and'the money holding tray both concealed and protected so that the teller need not remove the tray upon leaving his position temporarily.
A further object of the invention, ancillary to the above object, is to provide a container swingably supporting a tellers tray and having a novel means for selectively supporting the tray at various adjusted angles within the container.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a container of the above described character that may be chained to the tellers desk to prevent removal thereof and which is provided with carrying handles for trans porting the same between the bank vault and the tellers desk.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a tellers box that is fireproof, durable and which will serve as an excellent temporary safe.
These, together with various other objects and features of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds are attained by this invention, a preferred embodiment of which is shown by way of example only in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tellers box with parts being broken away showing the positioning of a tray therein when the box is closed;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially along section line 2-2 of Figure l disclosing the interior construction of the box;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially along section line 33 of Figure 2 disclosing the means on the tellers tray for holding the same in selected adjusted positions within the container or box;
2,722,469 Patented Nov. 1, 1955 ice Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view showing the swingable connection of the tray to the container; and,
Figure 5 is a sectional view: taken substantially along section line 55 of Figure 4.
Referring now to the accompany drawings in detail, it will be noted that like reference numerals are utilized to designate similar parts throughout the various views.
The container in its entirety is designated by the numeral 10' and generally comprises a pair of spaced, parallel side walls 12, a bottom or bottom wall 14, rear wall 16, top Wall 18 and an open front 20. As will be. noted, the bottom, rear wall and top wall are substantially rectangular in shape with the top wall 18 extending from the upper edge of the rearwall 16 parallel to and overlying a portion of the bottom Wall 14 while the side walls 12 have their front edges 22 arcuate shaped so that these side walls are substantially in the shape of quadrants.
The inner surfaces of the side Walls 12' are provided with inwardly opening grooves 24 at the front edge thereof which grooves smoothly join the top wall 18, rear wall 16 and a portion of the bottom wall' 14. These grooves 24 form tracks upon which an articulated closure 26- is slidably disposed.
As will be noted particularly from an examination of Figure 2, the articulated. closure. 26 is of a length substantially equal to the arcuate front edges of the side walls 12. In its closed position, it covers the open front 20 of the container or box 10 and slides within the tracks 24 to a position: adjacent and' parallel. to the. end wall. 16 when the container is opened. A. partition 28 extends between the side walls: 12 of the container, parallel and in spaced relation tothe rear wall 16. with the tracks 24 extending between the: partition and; the rear wall for guiding the closure therebetween. Knobs 30' are secured to the lower edge of the closure 26 for sliding the same toopened and closed positions;
The front edge: of the bottonr 14 is: provided with an upstanding flange 32 terminating in an inwardly extend-v ing ledge 34 parallel to the bottom. wall; 14 against which the lower. edged the closure126 seats; lock 36 is provided. on the flange; 32; to lock the. closure. 26 in closing position.
Swingably mounted within the container 10 is a money holding tray 38 comprising a pair of spaced, parallel side walls 40 and a stepped tray bottom 42 forming compartments in which bills of various denominations may be placed.
On the facing surfaces of the container sides 12 spaced vertically from the bottom 14 of the container and adjacent the partition 28 are opposing recesses 44. As will be noted particularly in Figure 4, these recesses are in the form of longitudinal slots having the lower edges thereof formed in rearward and forward arcuate seats 46 and 48 respectively. Rollers 50 are disposed in the recesses for rolling movement into seating engagement with either the rearward or forward seats 46 and 48. Anaxle 52 or shaft connects the rollers 50 to one another.
The side walls 40 of the tray 38 are slotted or notched adjacent the rear ends thereof as at 54 with the axle 52 being received in these notches. By this means, the tray 38 is swingably supported adjacent its rear end within the container 10. The forward and rear edges of the side walls 40 of the tray 38 are beveled as at 56 so that when the tray is disposed entirely within the container and the closure 26 is closed, a fiat seating portion against the bottom 14 of the container will be provided for the tray. When it is desired to swing the tray about the axle or shaft 52, the rollers 50 seat in the rear seats 46 while the forward portion of the tray is swung above the ledge 34; then, the tray may be further extended from the container by pulling the tray forwardly and seating the rollers in the forward seats 48.
Intermediate the ends of the tray 38, a sleeve extends between and opens into the side walls 40 of the tray. Disposed within the sleeve 58 is a pair of rods 60 and also disposed within the sleeve 58 is a spring 62 between the adjacent ends of the rods 60 pressing the remote ends or urging these ends outwardly from the side walls 40 of the tray 38. Axially spaced, elongated slots are provided in the sleeve 58 at opposite sides of the spring 62 and are indicated by the numeral 64. Lugs or projections 66 extend perpendicularly from the rods 60 through the slots 64 to limit the outward movement of the rods from the sleeve, these projections further constituting finger grips for drawing the remote ends of the rods within the sleeve.
To retain the tray in an elevated position, the same is swung about the axle 52 until the rods 60 are permitted to project outwardly from the side walls 40 of the tray 38 to engage in the grooves or tracks 24 thereby holding the tray in an elevated position. Obviously, the tray may be maintained in one of two selected positions with the rods 60 resting on the tracks 24 by exerting a pushing or pulling pressure on the tray 38 to seat the rollers 50 in either the rearward seats 46 or the forward seats 48 of the recesses 44.
To further enhance the swinging adjustability of the tray 38, the inner surfaces of the sides 12 of the container are provided with opposed, detents 68 formed in an arcuate path on a radius taken from the center of the roller 50 on the seat 48 to the center of the rods 60. With this arrangement, various selected elevations of the tray may be assumed or attained at the will of the operator. If desired, when the tray 38 is in the position shown in Figure 2, another pair of opposing recesses 69 may be provided on the inner surfaces of the sides 12 of the container 10 to prevent rattling of the tray within the container as the same is moved from place to place.
As a security measure, a U-shaped bar 70 may be secured to the flange 32 as shown in Figure 1 for chaining or otherwise securing the container 10 to the tellers desk.
To facilitate carrying the container 10 from place to place, the side walls 12 are recessed on their outer surfaces as at 72 and carrying handles 74 are hingedly disposed within the recesses.
From the foregoing description, the construction and operation of the invention are believed to be clearly apparent. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described. But, all suitable modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A container having an open front and including side walls having arcuate front edges, tracks formed on said front edges, a tray, means swingably mounting said tray within said container, and means on said tray releasably engaging said tracks and supporting said tray in one position, said releasably engaging means including a pair of axially aligned rods extending transversely of said tray, a spring disposed between the adjacent ends of said rods urging the remote ends of said rods outwardly from the sides of said tray, said side walls having a plurality of circumferentially spaced detents therein, the remote ends of said rods being adapted to seat in said detents to maintain the tray in selected positions within the container.
2. The structure as defined in claim 1, together with an articulated closure for said open front slidingly guided on said tracks, projections on said rods constituting finger grips for withdrawing the remote ends of the rods, and means for guiding the sliding movement of said rods.
3. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein said tray mounting means includes opposed longitudinally extending recesses in said side walls, a roller in each of said recesses, and an axle connecting said rollers, said tray being pivoted on said axle.
