(Cl. :l5- 137) This invention concerns the glueing of dowels in joinery and cabinet making.
It has been usual heretofore to apply glue to ydowels or holes therefor by the use of a dip stick and/or brush. This manual method of application is slow and inefficient. Socalled glue guns operated by compressed air have also been used but with these it is most ditiicult to regulate the amount of glue discharged. Too little or improperly distributed glue gives inadequate adhesion whilst an excessive quantity may result in a burst hole especially with thin work.
An object of the present invention is to provide a glue dispenser which supplies a standardized predetermined dose at each application and which also ensures a satisfactory distribution of the glue on the work.
According to the present invention a glue dispenser for coating dowel hole walls includes a cylindrical container constituting a glue reservoir, a peripherally hanged, detachable cap closing one end of said container, said cap including a centrally located, centrally bored internally threaded boss, a peripherally flanged, detachable base of generally frusto-conical shape closing the other end of the container, said base having formed inthe truncated apex thereof, an axial bore providing a glue discharge aperture and a counterbore immediately behind said axial bore, said counterbore constituting a chamber communicating with said container so as to receive doses of glue therefrom, a spider formed integrally with and located at the larger diameter end of said conical base, a centrally located and centrally bored internally threaded boss on said spider, an externally threaded guide tube engaged with the spider boss, a hollow threaded connecting member engaged with said guide tube and extending axially of said container to engage with the threaded boss on the cap, whereby said base and said cap are held in proper relationship to said cylindrical container, a manually operable, resiliently restored passing through said guide tube to slide partly and partly externally of said connecting member, piston being movable between predetermined limitu wa us said discharge aperture, said chamber being adapted to receive said piston on movement thereof towards aperture whereby a dose of glue held in said chamber may be dispensed from said aperture, and an elongated glue distributing member passing through said discharge aperture and movable with said piston in front of tl e glue being dispensed, said distributing member terminating in a head which, on the return stroke of the piston, distributes said dispensed dose of glue over the walls of a dowel hole. This distributing member is preferably rigidly connected to the piston in the glue dispenser and arranged to doctor the dose over the wall surface on an upward rctractive movement which is preferably effected when the piston returns to its initial position after returning from the cylinder. The distributing member may also constitute a valve head cooperating with a seating at the end of a discharge nozzle so as to close the discharge aper- ,ture when the dispenser is not in operation.

The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

- In one preferred form of construction the glue dispenser includes a cylindrical body 11 which may if desired have a laterally and upwardly inclined filling neck (not shown) equipped with a vented screw-on cap. This body 11 serves as the reservoir for glue and may be adapted to contain a suicient supply for say 1000 doses which may suffice for one days work. The lower end of the body or reservoir is closed by a base 12 of gener-Llly conical shape and having an external surface including two conical parts each with a downwardly extended virtual apex. The larger diameter upper conical surface part 12a is conveniently of a conical apex angle of about and the smaller diameter lower conical surface part 12b has a smaller apical angle of about 60. The apex of this lower part of the base 12 is truncated at 12C and forms an annular valve seat at the lower termination of a vertically extending axial bore 12d. This axial bore 12a' is counterbored at 12e for about half the thickness of the conical apex to provide a cylinder into which a piston may move downwardly to expel the predetermined glue dose.
A piston 13 is externally cylindrical, is bored at 13a in its otherwise solid lower end and is in the form of a hollow tube for most of its length. The piston 13 is attached to a distributing member 14 which has a shouldered shank 14a which fits in the bore 13a at the bottom of the piston and is held in position relative to the piston by means of a bar 15. This bar 15 has a tapped bore at its lower end which is threadedly engaged with an externally screwed upper end portion of the shank ida. The bar 15 has a hexagon head which bears by way of a washer 16 on the upper end of the tubular piston 13, the body of the bar passing freely within the tubular portion of the piston.
The base 12 has an upwardly projecting ilange 12j adapted to` fit around the lower end portion of the body 11. The upper end of the body is closed by a cap 17 having a depending ange 17j similarly fitting around the upper end portion of the body.
The base l2 includes an integrally formed spider 12g having an internally threaded centrally bored boss in which an externally threaded guide tube 1S is engaged.
The cap 17 includesvvan internally threaded centrally bored boss 17a in which is engaged the externally threaded upper end portion of a tubular connecting member 19. i
This member 19 has enlarged diameter lower part 19a, the lower end portion of which is internally threaded and adapted to be threadedijg.I engaged on the guide tube 13. Thus the connecting member 19 can be assembled in engagement with the cap i7 and the base 12 so as to hold these parts in proper relationship to the cylindrical body lll, as ,shown in Fig. l.v
Before connecting the base to the cylinder, however, parts are assembled in relation to ther base as follows: the distributing member 14 is positioned as shown, i. e. with the shoulder above its semi-spherical end abutting against the truncated lower end surface 12e of the conical base l2. The cylinder 13 is then passed through the guide liti into the position shown wherein the shank 14a of the distributing member i4 is received in the bore i3d at the lower end of the cylinder. A coiled compression spring 2li is fitted around the outside of the piston i3 so that one end of this spring bears against the upper end of the guide tube 1?. The bar 15 is passed through washer 16 and the hexagon head 15a is rotated whilst applying someV axial and rotary restraining pressure to the member i4, whereby the screwed shank of the member 14 is threadedly engaged in the tapped bore in the lower end of the bar 15, the washer 16 bearing on the upper end of the spring 20 causing it to be compressed and the other parts mentioned to assume the position indicated. The base may now be assembled to the connecting member 19 and thereby to the cap 17 and the body 11 as previously described.
An operating rod 21 having an enlarged diameter portion 21a is housed within the upper portion of the member 19 and carries a palm plate 22 on its upper end. After introduction of this rod 21 through the central bore in the cap 17, it can be prevented from moving out again beyond the position shown by locking with a grub screw 23.
The body 11 is provided with two finger grips 24.
In operation, assuming the dispenser to be in the condi tion illustrated, but empty, it is illed by unscrewing the cap 17 from the connecting member 19 so as to allow a supply of glue to be introduced into the body 11, after which the cap is reassembled on the connecting member 19 and body 11.
The counterbore 12e is preferably of substantially the same diameter or slightly larger than the lower end of the piston 13. This counterbore is now filled with glue which is discharged as a measured dose therefrom, if the palm plate 22 is depressed relative to the body 11, thereby causing displacement of the piston against the action of the spring 20 down to the position in which the lower end face of the piston encounters the shoulder at the base of the counterbore 12e.
Meanwhile the distributing member 14 has moved downwards, into a dowel hole to be closed with glue, and the valve constituted by the mutually engaging surfaces of the distributing member 14 and the truncated end 12e of the base 12 opens allowing the portion of glue previously contained in the counterbore 12e to pass into the dowel hole. Thereafter on release of pressure on the palm plate 22 the spring 20 re-exerts itself, thereby raising the piston 13 and distributing member 14, the latter scraping the glue along the surface of the dowel hole and effecting a good distribution of glue thereon.
I claim:
l. A glue dispensing device for coating dowel hole walls including a cylindrical container constituting a glue reservoir, a peripherally flanged, detachable cap closing one end of said container, said cap including a centrally located, centrally bored internally threaded boss, a peripherally flanged, detachable base of generally frustoconical shape closing the other end of the container, said base having formed in the truncated apex thereof, an axial bore providing a glue discharge aperture and a counterbore immediately behind said axial bore, said counterbore constituting a chamber communicating with said container so as to receive doses of glue therefrom, a spider formed integrally with and located at the larger diameter end of said conical base, a centrally located and centrally bored internally threaded boss on said spider, an externally threaded guide tube engaged within the spider boss, a hollow threaded connecting member engaged with said guide tube and extending axially of said container to engage with the threaded boss on the cap, whereby said base and said cap are held in proper relationship to said cylindrical container, a manually operable, resiliently restored piston passing through said guide tube to slide partly within and partly externally of said connecting member, said piston being movable between predetermined limits towards said discharge aperture, said chamber being adapted to receive said piston on movement thereof towards said aperture whereby a dose of glue held in said chamber may be dispensed from said aperture, and an elongated glue distributing member passing through said discharge aperture and movable with said piston in front of the glue being dispensed, said distributing member terminating in a head which, on the return stroke of the piston, distributes said dispensed dose of glue over the walls of a dowel hole.
2. A glue dispensing device for coating dowel hole walls including a cylindrical container constituting a glue reservoir, a detachable cap closing one end of said container, a detachable base closing the other end of said container, said base having formed therein a chamber communicating with said container so as to receive doses of glue therefrom and a glue discharge aperture providing an outlet from said chamber, a hollow connecting member threadedly depending from said cap and engaging with said base to hold said cap and base in proper relationship to said container, a hollow piston having an axial bore in one otherwise solid end, said piston sliding partly within and partly externally of said connecting member, a bar member disposed within said hollow piston and provided at one end with an axial tapped bore substantially in alignment with the bore in the piston end, said bar member projecting at its other end above said hollow piston, a glue distributing member passing through the piston bore and engaging threadedly with the tapped bore in the bar member a attened head disposed at the projecting end of said bar member and arranged to bear on the adjacent end of the piston, manually operable means bearing on one side of said head for moving said piston into said chamber and towards said discharge aperture, whereby a dose of glue in said chamber is dispensed from said aperture and said distributing member is caused to move through said aperture in front of said dispensed dose, a helical restoring spring arranged around the piston and bearing on the other side of the bar member head, a glue distributing head located at the free end of said distributing member and adapted, on the return stroke of said piston to spread said dose of glue over the Walls of a dowel hole, and a valve seat surrounding said discharge aperture, said glue distributing head acting, when said piston is fully restored, as a valve which mates with said seat to prevent further egress of glue from the container.
