Description

M. W. SEIF ERT FOUNTAIN TYPE BRUSH Filed April 2, 1955 @rif NSY/ .liv
Dec. 27, 1955 United States Patent O FOUNTAIN TYPE BRUSH Martin W. Seifert, Salt Lake City, Utah Application April 2, 1953, Serial No. 346,383 2 Claims. (Cl. 15 137) This invention relates to a brush, and more particularly to a brush of the fountain type.
'Ihe object of the invention is to provide a brush which may be a shaving brush, there being a manually operable means for propelling or dispensing shaving cream or the like onto the bristles.
Another object of the invention is to provide an applicator which includes a novel means for propelling cream onto the bristles of the brush,.there being a means provided for permitting the applicator to be readily iilled when it is empty, the present invention being suitable for use as a shaving brush, toothbrush, paint applicator or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an applicator which includes a convenient cover for preventing the material from drying out and wherein the applicator can be used for various materials suchas brushless shaving cream or regular shaving cream.
A further object of the invention is to provide an applicator which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the applicator of the present invention, and showing the cover in position for protecting the material such as shaving cream to prevent the material from drying out, Figure 1 being taken on the line 1 1 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken at right angles to the view shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevational view, showing the bottom of the applicator.
Figure 5 is a sectional View taken on the line 5 5' of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a sectional View taken on the line 6 6 of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 7 7 of Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a sectional View taken on the line 8 8 of Figure 3.
material, and arranged on one end of the housing 10 is a wall 11. Extending from the wall 11 or formed integral therewith is an annular collar 12 which is adapted to snugly receive therein a plurality of bristles 14. The wall 11 is provided with a plurality of openings or passageways 15 whereby material from the chamber 16 can pass or be dispensed from the chamber 16 through the openings 15 onto the bristles 14. The material in the chamber 16 may be shaving cream or any other material that is to be dispensed or projected onto the bristles 14. A cover 17 is detachably mounted on the housing 10, and the cover 17 can be removed when the bristles 14 are to be used for applying the shaving cream to the users face. The cover 17 serves to prevent the material from drying out. The cover 17 may abut suitable shoulders 18 on the exterior of the housing 10 to limit movement of the cover 17, and the cover 17 may be provided with a vent' opening 19, Figure l.
A plug 20 is mounted at the other end of the housing 10, and a screw member 21 extends longitudinally through the housing 10 and is rotatably mounted therein. A plunger 22 is arranged in threaded engagement or threadably receives the screw member 21 so that as the screw member 21 is rotated, the plunger 22 will be caused to move back and forth in the chamber 16 to propel the material from the chamber 16 through the openings 15 onto the bristles 14. For preventing rotation of the plunger 22, a pair of opposed ribs 23 extend inwardly from the housing 10. The ribs 23 are slidably received in opposed grooves or recesses 24 in the plunger 22, Figure 6.
A manually operable means is provided for rotating the screw member 21 to cause reciprocation of the plunger 22. This means comprises a shank 25 which extends from an end of the screw member 21, the shank 25 having a portion rotatably positioned in a sleeve 26. The shank 25 further includes an end portion 27 which is of square shape in cross section, and the square shaped portion 27 is snugly received in a square shaped socket 28. The socket 28 is formed integral with or secured to a knob 29 which is rotatably mounted on therhousing 10. The knob 29 may have anv exteriorly knurled portion 30 for facilitating the manual rotation 'of the knob 29.
A means is provided for lling the chamber 16 with material such as shaving cream when the material needs to be replenished. This means comprises a filling opening 31 which is arranged in the plunger 22, Figure 3. A plug 32 is threadedly positioned in engagement with the opening 31, and the plug 32 includes a stem 33. There is provided in the member 20 an opening 34 whereby with the knob 29 removed from the housing, and with the plunger 22 in its position contiguous to the plug 20, the user can manually grip the stem 33 and rotate or disengage the plug 32 from the opening 31 ber 16 can be filled with suitable material that is to be dispensed onto the bristles 14.
From the foregoing it is apparent that an applicator has been provided which can be used for applying various substances such as shaving cream, soap and the like. In use the cover 17 is removed and the knob 29 rotated to turn the screw member 21. As the screw member 21 turns the plunger 22 will reciprocate in the chamber 16 to force the material through the openings 15 onto the bristles 14, where it can be applied to any suitable surface. To fill the chamber 16 with shaving cream or other material, the plunger 22 is moved so that it is contiguous to the plug 20 whereby the user can grip the stem 33 and remove the plug 32. Thus, the supply of material in the chamber 16 can be replenished. The applicator of the present invention can be used for brushless shaving cream or regular shaving cream, or could also be used for applying paint. The applicator is always ready for immediate use and the cover 17 prevents the material from drying out, the applicator adapted to be made of any suitable material such as plastic. By means of the present invention pastes, creams and the like will be kept olf the hands while shaving, and there will be no wasting of creams, pastes and the like. Also, the present invention can be applied to toothbrushes or can be utilized in other spreading operations where even spreading is desired. The knob 29 rotatably engages the housing 10 so that 2,728,097 Patented Dec. 27, 1955 1. vIn an applicator-,Van'anrnular elongated housinghaying a chamber therein and an open end, the'wall closing the other endof said housing and having van annular collar extending therefrom, said collar being of Vless diameter than said wall, a plurality of bristles snugly seated in said collar, there being a plurality of openings in said wall for permitting passageV of material from said chamber to said bristles, a plug mountedin the openend Yof said housing, a screw member extending longitudinally through said housing and having a shank extending through said plug and provided with a square end portion,
