(Cl. -247) This invention relates to` a novel duster capable of being detachably applied to and supported on the head of a broom for use in conjunctionfwith the broom as `a support to provide a duster which can be conveniently used for dusting ceilings, side Walls, woodwork andV floors.

Another object of the invention is to provide a duster in the form of a fabric envelope having unique means for removably retaining it in an applied position on a broom head and which is provided with a plurality of duster plies capable of being selectively positioned in an exposed position for dusting and whereby after one ply has become soiled, another ply can be positionedin overlying relationship to the soiled ply and in an exposed position for use.

A further object of the invention is to provide a duster which may be readily removed for laundering.

Still a further object of the invention is to provide a duster of simple construction which may be economically manufactured and sold and which will afford a number of individual dusting plies enabling the duster to be used for a long period of time between washings.

Still a further object of the invention is to provide Va duster in the form of an envelope having a plurality of selectively usable plies and wherein one or more of such plies will additionally function as an envelope closer for retaining the duster in an applied position on a broom head.

Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, illustrating a presently preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein:

Figure l is a side elevational view of the duster shown in an applied position on a broom head;

Figure 2 is an Venlarged sectional View taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure l;

Figure 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view, taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1; and

Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse sectional view, taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 4 4 of Figure l.

Referring more specifically to the drawing, the duster in its entirety and'comprising the invention is designated generally 6 and comprises a broom head enclosing envelope formed primarily of an elongated piece of fabric which is folded back upon itself intermediate of its ends to provide a fold 7 and side walls 8 and 9. The side walls 8 and 9 have turned back free end portions forming outer plies 1li and 11, respectively. The plies 1d and 11 areintegrally joined to the side walls o and 9, respectively, along the folds 12 and 13, respectively.

A folded fabric piece 14 is disposed between the wall 8 and the turned back outer ply 10 Vthereof and includes the plies 15 and 16. A folded edge 17 of the piece 14 is disposed in the fold 1 2 and is secured thereto by stitching 18. A folded piece' of fabric 19, corresponding to the piece 14, composed of plies and 21 corresponding to i United States Patent() the plies 15 and 16, respectively, is disposed between the wall 9 and the outer ply 11 thereof and has its folded edge disposed in the fold 13 and secured thereto by stitching 23. The folded edges 12 and 13 constitute the open end 24 Vof the envelope 6. The complementary side edges of the walls 8 and 9 are secured together by stitching 25. The stitching 25 extends between the fold 7 and the open end 24 of the envelope 6 and secures the complementary side edges of the plies 10, 11, 14, 16, 20 and 21 to one another and to the side walls 8 and 9, as illustrated in Figure 3.

It will be noted that the plies 10, 15 and 16 are disposed on one side of the wall 8 while the plies 11, 20 and 21 are disposed on the opposite side of the wall 9. The fabric piece forming the envelope 6 and the fabric pieces 14 and 19 may be formed of any suitable fabric constituting a good dusting material o1' cloth, preferably one which may be readily laundered. The folded upper end 7, intermediate of the stitched side edges 25 is provided with anopening 26. A reinforcing strip 27 may be secured to one side of the envelope 6 by stitching 28 around the opening 26, for reinforcing said opening.

For the purpose of illustrating the application andV use of the duster 6, a conventional broom head 29 is illustrated having a rigid elongated base portion 30 in which is secured a mass of broom straws or bristles 31 which prowhich is shown, is projects from the back edge the ends of said base 30, as

The open end 24 of the duster 6 is slipped over the upper end of the handle 32 and the handle is then passed outwardly through the opening 26. The duster 6 is then slid down thehandle 32 and the open end 24 thereof is passed over the broom head 29 until the upper folded edge '7 is resting on the upper end of the base 30, as seen in Figures 1 and 2. When the duster 6 is thus disposed, the open end 24 thereof will be disposed beneath or beyond the free ends of the broom straws or bristles 31.

Assuming that the plies 10, 15 and 16 are disposed on the outer side of the wall 8 or externally of the envelope 6, as illustrated in Figures l to 3, and that the plies 11, 20 and 21 are disposed on the inner side of the wall 9 and internally of the envelope or duster 6, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, the outermost ply l@ is turned back to overlie the outer side of the wall 9 and to close the opening 24 to retain the duster 6 in an applied position on the broom head 29. The ply 16 and the exposed side of the ply 15 may then be used for dusting. After these surfaces have become soiled, the ply 15 is reversed and positioned in overlying relation to the ply 10, so that the other side of the ply 15 and the exposed side of the ply 16 may then be used in the same manner, after which the ply 16 is turned to a position overlying the ply 15 on the outer side of the wall 9, for use of the otherside of the ply 16 and the outer surface of the wall 8.

Thereafter, the plies 16, 15 and 10 are returned to positions on the outer side of the Wall S, after which the duster 6 can be removed, turned inside out and reapplied in the manner as previously described. Thereafter, the plies 11, tions are used in the same manner as previously described with respect to the plies 10, 1S and 16, respectively. A duster as in claim l, said last mentioned side wall having a turned back extension 'and a plurality of additional duster plies correspondingto the turned back extension andadditionalduster plies, respectively, of said first inentioned sideA wall, said turned -baek extension and additional duster plies of the last mentioned side wall being disposed internally-ofthe envelope when the turned back extension and additional duster plies of the first mentioned side wall are externally disposed relative to the envelope, and said envelope being reversible for positioningthe turned b aeknextension and additional duster plies o the last mentioned side wall lin an externalroperative positionrelative to fthe envelope.
