UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
THADDEUS S. SGOVILLE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.A
IMPROVEMENT IN GULTIVATORS.
To all 'whom 'it may concern Beitknown that LTEADDEUs S. ScovrLLE, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, making part of this specitication- Figure l being a plan of the machine; Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof Fig. 3, a rear elevation thereof.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Two parallel side beams, A A, are provided, situated at a suitable distance apart, and connected together by hinged bars B B, substantially as represented in Figs. l and 3. To the front end of said side beams are hinged thills C U, the cross-bar a, connecting said thlls, being jointed in the middle at b to correspond with the joints of the hinged bars B B, so as to allow the frame to adapt itself to unevenness of ground, and especially to allow it to pass in the hollows or depressions between the rows of corn, &c. The side beams are supported by spur-wheels D D D D, turning on journals c c ce, the front wheels being situated on the inside of the side beams, and the rear ones being situated on the outside thereof. These spurwheels act both as supporting-wheels and culvators, and are constructed with hubs d d and spurs ff, the outer ends of said spurs being bent or curved, as represented in Fig. 2, for the purpose of stirring the soil more thoroughly. Teeth E E are secured to the side beams, either between the front and rear spurwheels or in front of the foremost spur-wheels; These teeth are convertible, so as to be used on either side of the machine, thereby turning the soil outward or inward, as ma;r be desired.
Any arrangement whereby the teeth are readily secured to or removed trom the side beams may be used. In the drawings, the shanks of the teeth are represented as passing up through the side beams, and nuts g g screwed thereon. A seat, G, for the drivers use, is situated over the middle of the inachine, being supported by bent rods or springs 7L h, secured to the side beams, the portions thereof on which the seatrests sliding in guides t' t', formed by securing a plate, 7c, to the under side of the seat, as represented in Figs. 2 and 3, or in any convenient manner, so that the frame may adjustitself without beingimpeded by said seat.
By using the spur-wheels D D, serving both as supporting-wheels and cultivators, in connection with the convertible teeth E E, the soil is more thoroughly pulverized and cultivated, while less power is required to draw the machine than the ordinary toothed cnltivator.
The whole machine, arranged as above specified, is very effectual, and adapts itself to all kinds of ground and soil in a superior manner.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement of the side beams, A A, hinged together, the jointed bar a. connecting the thills, the spur-wheels D D D D, acting both as cultivators and supporters, the convertible cultivating-teeth E E, and the sliding or self-adjusting seat Gr, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
In witness that the above is a true specification of myimproved cultivatorhereunto set my hand this 21st day of October, 1859.
