To all whom 'it 'may concern.:

Beit known that I, DANIEL SHIRLEY, of New Market, in the county of Shenandoah and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Bags; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to whiclfit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to paper bags for grocers and others use; and it consistsin certain improvements in the construction of the saine, substantially as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

1n the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view, showing a filled bag of my improved construction folded and secured. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is aperspective view, showing the bag before folding.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the bag, which may be ol'any desired ordinary construction, having the open mouth, B,through which the contents are filled.

C is a strip of paper or other suitable flexible material, which is secured to the body ot' the bag bypasting or other means, and has an extension, D, the end of which is provided with mucilage or other adhesive substance, E, as shown. Strip C in Figs. l, 2, and 3 is shown as extending entirely around the bag, beginning at the upper front edge and extending down, around, and up the other'side. By

this construction the strip forms a re-enforcc for the flexible bag material and supports the bottom when the bag is lifted while containing weighty material. lIn this case strip C may be secured to the bag continuously orintermittently, as desired, and when not connected to the bag at the part extending under the bottom thereof, will permit of the latterI giving to the weight of the contents of the bag.

rlhe extension D is'not connected with the bag for some dista-nce'below the top of the bag, and continues for some distance above the top, so as to go over the latter when folded and be secured to the front ot' thebag.

The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The bag is lirst tilled and the top folded over in the usual manner, preferably as shown in Figs. l and 2, when the strip U is brought over, the adhesive substance E inoistened and attached to the bag, as shown, thus securely fastening the same without the use of twine or the like. This simple mode of fastening is very convenient and always ready for attachment.

I claim as newrlhe combination, with the bag, of a ilexible strip, (l, extending entirely around the same from edge to edge as a re-euforce, said strip being provided with the gummed extension D E, as set forth.
