2 Claims. (Cl. 2-80) Another object of the invention is to provide a garment of the type described above, which garment, in the legged form, provides ample room for the feet of the wearer which may be enclosed in the garment.

Further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description of the preferred form of the invention.

In the drawings, a waistband adapted to encircle the waist of the wearer to support the improved garment therefrom, is indicated at 10. The waistband 10 is preferably formed of elastic material. Attached to the waistband 10 and suspended therefrom are two elongated front panels 11 and two elongated rear panels 12, the panels 11 being identical and the panels 12 being identical to the panels 11 in the illustrated form of the invention. The panels are preferably formed of fabric and are shaped as illustrated in Fig. 1, for example. Each panel has a substantially straight upper edge secured to the waistband 10 by stitching. In the form of the garment shown in Fig. 1, the outer side edge of each panel is inclined downwardly and outwardly, as at 13, and then downwardly and slightly inwardly, as at 14. Each panel has a bottom edge 15 in substantially parallel relation to the upper edge thereof. In the form of the garment illustrated in Fig. 1, each panel has a lower and outer corner which is rounded, as at M and each panel is provided with a straight inner edge 16 at substantially right angles to the upper and lower edges thereof.

The edge portions 13 of the front panels 11 are preferably secured to the respective edge portions 13 of the rear panels 12 by stitching. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the front panels 11 may be let out by a strip 17 of fabric material interconnecting the edges 16 of the panels 11 and secured 2,744,253 Patented May 8, 1956 ice thereto as by stitching. As shown in Fig. 2, the rear panels 12 may be let out by a strip 18 interconnecting the edges 16 of the panels 12 and secured thereto as by stitching. In the form of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the strips 17 and 18 are of identical size and shape. If desired, the strips 17 and 18 may be omitted and the front panels 11 formed integrally with one another and the rear panels 12 formed integrally with one another. As best shownin Fig. l, the front panels 11 are provided with two strips or gores 19 of fabric material, each gore 19 having a tapered upper end'19 disposed a short distance belowv the upper end of the edge portion 14 of one of the panels 11 and secured to the edge portion 14. Each gore 19 extends downwardly from the end 19 thereof along the edge portion 14 and then laterally throughout the bottom edge 15 of one of the panel-s 11. Each gore 19 is securedto one of the panels 11 by stitching. Two strips or gores 20 are provided for the respective rear panels 12, the gores 20 being identical to the gores 19 and being positioned and secured to the panels 12 in an identical manner.

In the preferred form of the invention, the garment is provided with two slide fasteners, each fastener comprising two stringers, each equipped with fastening elements and also comprising a slider, the stringers of the two fasteners being stitched to the free edges of the respective gores 19 and 20. In Fig. 2, for example, the stringers on the gores 19 are indicated at 21 and the stringers on the gores 20 are indicated at 22. The stringers 21 have their upper ends disposed at the upper ends of the respective gores 19 and have their lower ends in proximity to one another. The stringers 22 have their upper ends disposed at the upper ends of the respective gores 20 and have their lower ends in proximity to one another. One of the stringers 21 (see Fig. 7) carries a slider 21 and is provided with a female coupling element 21* at the upper end thereof. The other stringer 21 (see Fig. 8)

. is provided with a male coupling element 21 at the upper end thereof. One of the stringers 22, carried by the rear panel 12 (see Fig. 7) is provided with a male coupling element 22 at the upper end thereof. The other stringer 22 (see Fig. 8) carries a slider 22 and is provided with a female coupling element 22 at the upper end thereof.

.As shown in Fig. 1, two plackets 23 are provided, each placket 23 extending above the upper end of one stringer 21 and the upper end of one stringer 22. One of the plackets 23 is stitched to one of the panels 11 and one of the panels 12, as illustrated in Fig. 7. The other placket 23 is stitched to the other panel 11 and the other panel 12, as shown in Fig. 8. The plackets 23 are identical in size and shape and each is provided with two male snap elements 23 and two female snap elements 23 the arrangement being such that each placket 23 may be snapped to the other or folded in half and the halves snapped to one another. The purpose of the plackets 23 will appear hereinafter.

In the sack or bunting form (see Fig. l) of the improved convertible garment, each stringer 21 cooperates with one of the stringers 22 to close the lower portion of the garment. In the sack form of the garment, each placket 23 is folded in half and its halves snapped together. When it is desired to convert the garment from the sack form to the legged form thereof, the piackets 23 and the two slide fasteners are first opened. The stringers 21 are then fastened to one another by the slider 21 and the stringers 22 fastened to one another by the slider 22*. The plackets 23 are snapped together in the legged form of the garment to provide a closed and comfortable crotch portion therefor.

One advantage of the improved convertible garment resides in the provision of gores in the bottom of the garment to provide ample foot room therein so that when worn by a child in the legged form thereof, the child may walk with the feet enclosed in the garment without undue risk of losing its balance. However, it will be understood that, if desired, suitable leg openings may be formed in the bottom of the garment so that the wearers legs may extend through the latter. Another advantage of the improved garment resides in the provision of a comfortable crotch portion therefor. Another advantage resides in the provision of a garment, the bottom portion of which may be fully opened or closed when desired. The garment may be easil y remove from or put on a child. it may also be noted that the improved garment, which is of simplified and inexpensive construction, is very easily convertible from the sack form to the legged form thereof.

While the preferred form of the invention has been illustrated in the drawings, it will be understood that various changes may be effected in details without departure from the principles of the invention and the scope of the claims.

What i claim is:

1. In a garment convertible from a bag form to a legged form, the combination of elongate front and rear cover members for lengthwise suspension from the waist of the wearer, each cover member having the upper portions of the side edges thereof secured to the upper portions of the respective side edges of the other member, said side edges flaring outwardly at the lower extremities of said upper portions and then extending downwardly in a substantially rectilinear direction to the respective bottom edges, to effect crotch room in the legged form of the garment, and four slide fastener elements two of which are equipped with sliders, two of said fastener elements extending along the respective rectilinear edges and extending along the bottom edge of each cover member in endwise relationship, the fastener elements being secured to the respective cover members and the slider-equipped fastener elements being disposed diagonally opposite one another, the slider-equipped fastener element on the front cover member cooperating with the opposite fastener element on the rear cover memher and the other slider-equipped fastener element cooperating with the opposite fastener elemcnt on the front cover member to effect a. garment of bag form, the slider-equipped fastener element on each cover member, on folding each cover member on itself along a longitudinal median fold line, cooperating with the other fastener element on the same cover member, to effect a legged garment.

2. In a garment convertible from a legged form to a bag form, the combination of elongate front and rear sections for lengthwise suspension from the waist of the wearer, each section having upper side edge portions converging toward the waist of the wearer, said upper side edge portions being permanently secured to one another to enclose the lower body of the wearer, said edge portions curving outwardly at the junction of the latter with lower substantially straight side edge portions of the sections, each junction forming an obtuse angle at one side of each section and the junctions providing a crotch area in the legged form of the garment, and each section having a bottom edge merging with said lower side edge portions, a first fastening means on the front section arranged along substantially one-half of the bottom edge and the corresponding lower side edge portion, a second fastening means on the front section arranged along substantially the other half of the bottom edge and the corresponding lower side edge portion, 2. third fastening means on the rear section arranged along substantially one-half of the bottom edge and the corresponding lower side edge portion, the last-mentioned side edge portion and part of the bottom edge corresponding to the first-mentioned side edge portion and part of. the bottom edge of said front section, and a fourth fastening means on the rear section arranged along substantially the other half of the bottom edge and the corresponding lower side edge portion, the first and second fastening means cooperating with the third and fourth fastening means, respectively, to effect a garment of bag form, the first fastening means cooperating with the second and the third with the fourth, on folding each section on itself along a longitudinal median fold line, to effect a garment of legged form.
