, 13 Claims. (Cl. 1 187) j This invention relates to tools for delivering and operating on a work element, and particularly to a tool having operating means for delivering an element to a work performing device which operates on the delivered element.
In the copending application of A. H. Haberstump, Serial No. 325,944, tiled December 15, 1952, an air operated clip deforming tool is illustrated. The tool has air operated jaws for squeezing the clip which was delivered to the jaws by the manual manipulation of a magazine for the clips which is mounted upon the tool.
In the present invention a similar type of tool is disclosed having clinching jaws and valve means for controlling the flow of air for actuating the jaws. A carrier is provided for the clips which 1s actuatedby a piston, the
air to the cylinder of which is controlled by a trigger op-4 eratedvalve. The piston advances a clip to recesses in the jaws and delivers a clip to the recesses after a clinching operation has been performed. The tool comprises a body having a pair vof cylinders and a handle with a dual trigger for actuating the pistons in the cylinders, one for moving the jaws together to squeeze a clip supported thereby and the other for advancing the carrier for the clips for delivering a clip to the jaw. Accordingly, by the manipulation of the trigger, a clip may be delivered to the jaws, and after the tool is advanced to insert a clip in an aperture, the l movement of the trigger in the opposite vdirectioncauses the jaws to move together and thereby squeeze the clip `to haveit retained within the aperture.
Accordingly, the main objects of the invention are: `to provide a tool with a clip holding means andV jaws for crimping the clip, both of which are actuated by uid pressure and controlled by a trigger which operates valves in the fluid passageways in the tool; to provide a tool having means tor supporting a series of elements to be` operated on and for advancing the endmost elements to an operating device which thereafter performs a work operation on the element; to provide a tool having a body containing a cylinder and piston for advancing a carrier to deliver the endmost element of a series retained thereby and a device which engages said delivered element and performs an operation thereon, and, ingeneral, to provide a tool having an element deliveringand work performing device thereon which is simple in construction, positivein operation and economical of manufacture.

The tool of the present invention is similar to the tool illustrated, described and claimed in the above mentioned copending application. The tool incorporates a second cylinder which is utilized for-advancing the clip into the recesses in the open jaws of the clinching device. The tool comprises a body 10 having an aperture 11 forming a cylinder when enclosed by a head 12 which is retained in position by a spring ring 13 and sealed to the cylinder wall by an 0ring 14. The head has a central boss 15 containing a threaded aperture in which a threaded stud 16 is disposed, having a stem 17 which is sealed by an O-ring 18. The end of the stem 17 limits the retracted position ot a piston 19 contained within the aperture or cylinder 11. The piston is sealed to the wall by an O-ring 21. The piston 19 has a. central stem 22 which is enlarged into a cylindrical portion 23 which is guided within a cylindrical sleeve bearing 24. Forwardly of the cylindrical portion 23, a wedge extension 25 is provided which may be advanced between rollers 26 on the rear end of force applying jaws 27 and 2S. A conical spring 29 is disposed between the forward end of the cylinder 11 and the piston 19 for urging the piston rearwardly against the end of the stern 17 when the air in the rear of the piston has been directed to atmosphere.-
The -forward extending portion 31 of the body 10 has a slot 32 therein in which the jaws are mounted and retained in pivotal relation to each other by a pin 33 which is secured in an aperture in the portion 31 by a spring ring 34. The jaw 27 is herein illustrated as having a pair of spaced bosses 35, while the jaw 28 has a central boss y36 which is disposed between the bosses 35 when secured in position by the pin 33. It is to be understood that the apertures in the bossV 36l and the bosses 35 have a diameter larger `than that of the pin 33, as illustrated in -the above copending application,
so as to permit the recesses 37 in the ends of the jaws to engage and grip a clip due to the pressure applied thereto by `springs 38 which are supported on the extending portion 31 of the body by screws 39. This portion of the tool is similar to that of the above mentioned copend ing application and forms the force applying portion of the tool which squeezes the clip after it has been inserted in the recesses of the jaws.
A slide supporting clip 41 is secured to the forward end of the body by a screw and lock washer 46 and a similar clip 40 is secured to the rear end of the body by a bolt 47. The clip 40 has a downwardly extending flange 48 engaging the rear end of the upper body section. A slide 42 is supported in the clips 40 and 41 for longitudinal movement therein. The slide support-s an upwardly presenting channel element 43, the flanges 44 of which are provided with teeth 45 along the upper edges thereof. The forward portion of the body has a cylin.- der 49 containing a piston 51 secured thereto by an O-ring 52. A piston rod 53 extends from the piston through a head 54 which is secured in position by a split ring 55. The channel element 43 is curved downwardly at S6 providing a vertical portion 57 which is engaged by the forward end of the piston rod. 53. When the piston 51 is urged forwardly, the piston rod engaging the vertical portion 57 of the channel element 43 carries the element forwardly an amount limited by i ani vadjustable-screwr 58 secured to a boss 59 secured to` the under face of the slide 42. The pin 58 is adjustable in an aperture in the boss 59 and secured in adjusted po sition by a setscrew 61.
A recess 62 in the upper part of the body has a coil spring 63 therein which abuts a linger 64 extending downwardly from the channel element 43 so that as the channel element is advanced forwardly the spring is cornpressed, providing a force for returning the channel element rearwardly when the air is removed from the piston 51.. A clip supporting magazine 65 may be of any cross-sectional shape, but here is illustrated as being of channel shape, with therupwardly presenting anges 66 directed inwardly to converge toward each other. The magazine is secured to the slide 42 by rivets 67, with rectangular washers 68, 69 and 71 disposed therebetween which are positioned within slots 72, 73 and 74 in the channel clement 43. This permits the channel element 43 'to move with the slide 42 and magazine and to move independently thereof. The magazine 65 is arched downwardly at 75 to have a vertically disposed delivery end 76 which supports a strap 77 that extends in a slot 78 in the forward end of the body portion 31.
A follower 79, which has a lower portion shaped to slide between the flanges 66 of the magazine, is provided with a spring 81 on the bottom for urging the rear portion in a counterclockwise direction. A channel-shaped detent 82 is secured to the follower '79 by a pivot pin 83 and is urged in a clockwise direction by a spring 84. A pair of teeth 85 is provided on the detent 82 aligned with the teeth 45 on the flanges 44 of the channel element 43. The springs 81 and 84 are so balanced that the follower will be retained in advanced position within the magazine when the channel element 43 moves rearwardly in engagement with the rearmost element contained therein. After the magazine is loaded with the.
elements to be operated upon by the device, the follower 79 is placed within the magazine in the rear thereof, with the teeth 85 of the detent positioned adjacent to the teeth 45 of the channel element 43. Upon the operation of the piston 53, the channel element will be moved forwardly to the left as viewed in Fig. 2, causing the teeth 45 thereof to engage the teeth 85 of the detent 82, to thereby move the ydetent forwardly along therewith. This causes the follower to apply a force on the series of elements within the magazine and since the foremost elements rest 'upon vthe top of the pair of vjaws 27 and 28, the magazine will move forwardly with the channel element `43. Such movement continues until the 'stop element 58 strikes the flange 4S of the clip 4t), at which time the vertically extending end 76 of the magazine 65 will be aligned with recesses 37 provided on the inner faces of the jaws. As soon as this alignment occurs, the further movement of the channel member 43 will carry the follower 79 forwardly which will advance all of the elements within the magazine and eject the endm'ost element from the magazine into the recesses v37.
A rectangular washerlike element 87 at the rear end of the slide 42 operating in the slot 74 of the channel element 43 has a downwardly directed end portion 88 and an upwardly directed end portion 89, thereby directly connecting the magazine 65 to the slide 42 for removing any shock from the rivet 67 when the stud 58 strikes the flange 48 and stops the forward movement of 'the magazine and slide. After the slide 42 and the magazine 65 are stopped in this manner, the channel element 43 may continue to be advanced in view of the slots 72, 73 and 74 provided therein at the position of the rivets 67, as indicated above. This additional movement is required to carry the follower 79 forwardly for ejecting the endmost element from the end of the magazine into the jaws or other receiving means.
The body l has a handle 91 containing kan `intake passageway 92 and an outlet passageway 9,3 for air which is suppliedk through4 a tting 94 having the-opening :therethrough provided with a screen 95. The passageway 92 communicates with a spring pressed ball sealing valve 96 which is unseated by a pin 97 on a plunger 98 which permits air from the intake passageway 92 to pass through a passageway 99 into the cylinder 11 in rear of the piston 21. This causes the piston 19 to move forwardly and operate the jaws 27 and 2S to perform a work operation on an element delivered thereto from the magazine 65. A similar Valve 96` is operated. by a pin on a similar plunger 98 for admitting the air through a passageway 101 to the rear of 'the pis-ton 51 in the cylinder 49. A string 102 in the rear of each plunger returns it to its outermost position, permitting the ball of the valve to seal off the air and the air back of the piston to escape to atmosphere through the passageways 93 and 103.
A trigger 164 is mounted on a pin 105 located between the two valves so that the trigger may be rocked either clockwise or counterclockwise through the positioning of the finger at the top or bottom of the trigger, thereby opera-ting either one of thel valves. When the finger is movedV to the top of lthe trigger and the trigger is moved in a clockwise direction, the upper valve is unseated, permitting air to pass into the cylinder 49 in rear of the piston 51, to thereby advance the piston rod 53 and the channel element 44?: which causes the advancement of the slide 42 andthe magazine 65 and the delivery of an article therefrom to the jaws. When the finger is shifted to the bottom of the trigger and the trigger is actuated thereby in a counterclockwise direction, the lower valve is open, permitting air to advance the piston 19 forwardly to thereby operate the jaws and to squeeze the work e1ement which is supported thereby. Upon shifting the l nger from the top to the bottom of the trigger, the
air in the cylinder 49 is conducted to atmosphere through the passageways 103 and 93, and when the trigger is released when moved to lower position, the lower plunger moves outwardly, `permitting the air Within the cylinder 11 to pass to atmosphere through the passageways 93 and .103. With this arrangement, rapid operation of the channel element 43 occurs to advance a work element into the recesses 86 of the jaws 4and also the rapid actuation of the jaws to operate on the element. By having the apertures in the bosses 35 and `36 larger than the pin 33, tolerance is provided kwhich permits the jaws to be moved out when the element is forced therein so that a positive gripping of the work element occurs through the application of pressure by the springs 38. The channel element, slide and magazine have the pressure removed therefrom uponthe release of the upper portion of the trigger after the article is moved to position where work 'is `to be performed thereon. The movement of the trigger in a counterclockwise direction by the application of force on the bottom thereof causes the operating device to be actuated and perform the vdesired work upon the element. Two lingers may be applied to the trigger, one for rocking it clockw-ise, the other counterclockwise, so that a rapid operation will occur for delivering an element tothe operating device and for immediately `actuating the device.
It will be noted that apertures 106 and 107 are provided through the magazine 65 and slide 42 communieating with the slots 73 and 72, respectively, in the channel 43 to have the heads of the screws 46 and bolt 47 available for a tool so that the supporting clips 40 and 41 may be removedv from the tool body or applied thereto. This is desirable as it is contemplated that various types of work elements will be employed with the tool to be operated on by squeezing jaws 27 and 28. Similarly, the mechanism for advancing the magazine and for delivering `a work element therefrom may be applied to other types of work performing devices, such as rotary driving members, so that screws, studs and the like may yalso rbe `operated on after they are 'automatically delivered `instr-advanceof such devices. It is to be under.
stood, therefore, that the particular cross-sectional shape of the magazine has been provided by way of illustration and not by limitation since it should be apparent to anyone skilled in the art that the section of magazine will conform to the shape of the engaged portion of the article and will change from time to time, depending upon the type of article which is handled thereby. A boss S may be provided on the side of the body 10, having an aperture 109 therein by which the entire tool may be suspended on a cable or which may be supported when not in use on a suitable hanger.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination in a work performing tool having a body which supports means for receiving and manipulating an element, a slide on said body mounted for forward and rearward longitudinal movement, a magazine secured to said slide for supporting a plurality of elements in aligned relation, a channel element disposed between said magazine and slide and movable relative thereto, a follower in said magazine having a toothed detent thereon, said channel element having flanges containing teeth aligned with the teeth on said detent, and means on said body to move said channel element to cause the teeth thereof to engage those of the detent and advance the follower and the magazine and thereafter the follower in the magazine.
2. The combination in a work performing tool having a body which supports means for receiving and manipulating an element, a slide on said body mounted for forward and rearward longitudinal movement, a magazine secured to said slide for supporting a plurality of elements in aligned relation, a channel element disposed between said magazine and slide and movable relative thereto, a follower in said magazine having a toothed detent thereon, said channel element having flanges containing teeth aligned with the teeth on said detent, and means on said body to move said channel element to cause the teeth thereof to engage those of the detent and advance the follower and the magazine and thereafter the follower in the magazine, the forward end of said magazine being rearwardly of said receiving means so that when the follower attempts to urge an element into said receiving means said magazine will be advanced with the channel element until the end thereof is aligned with the receiving means, after which the further movement of the channel member and follower will deliver an element from the magazine to said receiving means.
3. The combination in a work performing tool being a body which supports means for receiving and manipulating an element, a slide on said body mounted for forward and rearward longitudinal movement, a magazine secured to said slide for supporting a plurality of elements in aligned relation, a channel element disposed between said magazine and slide and movable relative thereto, a follower in said magazine having a toothed detent thereon, said channel element having flanges containing teeth aligned with the teeth on said detent, means on said body to move said channel element to cause the teeth thereof to engage those of the detent and advance the follower and the magazine and thereafter the follower in the magazine, the forward end of said magazine being rearwardly of said receiving means so that when the follower attempts to urge an element into said receiving means said magazine will be advanced with the channel element until the end thereof is aligned with the receiving means, after which the further movement of the channel member and follower will deliver an element from the magazine to said receiving means, and adjustable means on said slide by which the advancement of the magazine is stopped with the delivering end thereof aligned with said receiving means.
4. The combination in a work performing tool having a body which supports means for receiving and manipulating an element, a slide on said body mounted for forward and rearward longitudinal movement, a magazine secured to said slide for supporting a plurality of elements in aligned relation, a channel element disposed between said magazine and slide and movable relative thereto, a follower in said magazine having a toothed detent thereon, said channel element having flanges containing teeth aligned with the teeth on said detent, means on said body to move said channel element to cause the teeth thereof to engage those of the detent and advance the follower and the magazine and thereafter the follower in the magazine, the forward end of said magazine being rearwardly of said receiving means so that when the follower attempts to urge an element into said receiving means said magazine will be advanced with the channel element until the end thereof is aligned with the receiving means, after which the further movement of the channel member and follower will deliver an element from the magazine to said receiving means, and adjustable means on said slide by which the advancement of the magazine is stopped with the delivering and thereof aligned with said receiving means.
5. The combination in a work performing tool having a body which supports means for receiving and manipu-l lating an element, a slide on said body mounted for forward and rearward longitudinal movement, a magazinesecured to said slide for supporting a pluralityof elements in aligned relation, a channel element disposed between said magazine and slide and movable relative thereto, a follower in said magazine having a toothed detent thereon, said channel element having flanges containing teeth aligned with the teeth on said detent, means on said body to move said channel element: to cause the teeth thereof to engage those of the detent and advance the follower and the magazine and thereafter the follower in the magazine, the forward end of said magazine beingrearwardly of said receiving means so that when the follower attempts to urge an element into said receiving means said magazine will be advanced with the channel element until the end thereof is aligned with the receiving means, after which the further movement of the channel member and follower will deliver an element from the magazine to said receiving means, adjustable means on said slide by which the advancement of the magazine is stopped with the delivering end thereof aligned with said receiving means, a work performing device on said body, means on said body for causing said device to operate on said delivered element, a rockable trigger on said body, and control means actuated by said trigger disposed in such manner that when the trigger is rocked in one direction an element is delivered to the receiving means and when rocked in the other direction the device is actuated to operate upon the delivered element.
6. The combination in a work performing tool having a body which supports receiving means for an element and work performing means adjacent thereto: which operates on the delivered element, a magazine for supporting a plurality of elements, a follower in said magazine, a piston for urging said follower against the rearmost element for advancing said magazine and delivering an element to said receiving means, and means for actuating said piston.
7. The combination in a work performing tool having a body which supports receiving means for an element and work performing means adjacent thereto which operates on the delivered element, a magazine for supporting a plurality of elements, a follower in said magazine, means for urging said follower against the rearmost element for advancing said magazine and delivering an element to said receiving means, means for actuating said work performing means to operate upon said delivered element, a handle on said body having air passageways therethrough, a pair of valves in said passageways, a cylinder having a piston for applying pressure to said follower, a cylinder having a piston for actuating said work performing means,
and a rockable, trigger for actuating said valves selec' tively when moved in opposite directions.
8. The combination in a work performing toolhaving a body which supports receiving means for an element and work performing means adjacent thereto which open ates on the delivered element, a magazine for supporting a plurality of elements, a follower in said magazine, a piston for urging said follower against the rearmost element for advancing said magazine and delivering an element to said receiving means, a handle on said body, trigger means on said handle, and means actuated by said trigger means for operating said piston.
9. The combination in a work performing tool having a body which supports receiving means for an element, a magazine. on said body for supporting a plurality of elements, a follower in .said magazine, and means for urging said follower against the rearmost element in said magazine for first advancing said magazine to said receiving means and thereafter for advancing all of the elements within the magazine and the endmost element from the magazine into said receiving means.
10. The combination in a work performing tool having a body which supports receiving means for an element, a magazine on said body for supporting a plurality of elements, a follower in said magazine, means for urging said follower against the rearmost element in said magazine for first advancing said magazine to said receiving meansV and thereafter for advancing all of the elements within the magazine and the endmost element from the magazine into said receiving means, a handle on said body to be grasped by an operator, and means on said handle for applying a force to said follower.
11. The combination in a work performing tool having a 'body which :supports receiving means for an element, afmagazine on said body for supporting a p-lurality of elements, a follower in said magazine, means for urging said follower -against the rearmost element in said magazine for firs-t advancing said magazine to said receiving means and thereafter for advancing all of the elements within lthe magazine and the endmost element from the magazine into .said receiving means, a
handle on said body to be grasped by an operator, means` on said handle for applying a force to said follower, and means for yretracting said Vmagazine with saidV follower retained 4against the `rearmost element therein 12.
