2 Claims. (Cl. 276-41) This invention relates to improved means for securing type forms in galleys, and more particularly to more eicient and practical galley locks for this purpose, the primary object of the invention being to provide devices of this kind which can be more easily, quickly, and accurately applied, can be as easily and quickly removed, and which, when in place, more securely hold a type form in a galley.
Another important object of the invention is to provide galley locking devices of the character indicated above which are simple and uncomplicated in construction and can be made in serviceable and attractive forms at relatively low cost.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein, for purposes of illustration only, specific embodiments of the invention are set forth in detail.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a galley showing a type form secured therein by one form of locking device in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the locking device of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 2 and through a portion of an associated galley;
Figure 4 is a perspective View of another form of locking device in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 5 is an transverse vertical section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 4 and through portions of an associated galley.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, and rst to Figures 1 to 3 thereof, the numeral 9 generally designates a conventional printers galley having a flat bottom wall 10, opposed side walls 11, 12 rising from the side edges of the bottom wall 10, and an end wall 13 rising from one end of the bottom wall 10 and extending between and joined to related ends of the side walls 11, 12. A rectangular type form 15 is shown positioned in the corner of a galley 9, the type forni 15 having an edge 16 engaged with the galley end wall 13, an opposite end 17, a side edge 18 engaged with the galley side wall 12, and an opposite edge 19.
The magnetic form of galley lock, generally designated 20, in Figures 1 to 3, is preferably an isosceles triangular block 21, of suitable material, such as metal, having at, preferably parallel upper and lower surfaces 22 and 23, respectively, and two similar right angularly related galley wall abutting sides 24 and 25, respectively.
A finger-receiving recess 26, of concave form, is provided in the lower surface 23 and opens through the diagonal side 27 of the block 21, and facilitates manual placing and removal of the block. Two of the locks constitute -a complete type form locking means.
Near the abutting side 24 of the block 21, the block 21 is traversed by preferably two vertical permanent magnets 28 and 29, which are spaced parallel from each other and from the abutting side 24. The magnets 28 and 29 are preferably cylindrical in shape and have upper and lower ends 30 and 31, respectively, which are flush with the upper and lower surfaces 22 and 23, respectively, of the block 21.
The block 21 is also traversed by preferably one horizontal permanent magnet 32, also preferably cylindrical in shape, which has an exposed outer end 33 which is flush with the abutting side or edge side 25, and an unexposed inner end 34 which is spaced from the diagonal side 27 of the block 21, the magnet 32 being positioned at right angles to the abutting side 25 and spaced midway between the upper and lower block surfaces 22 and 23.
To releasably lock the type form 15 in the position illustrated in Figure l, two of the locks 2t) are employed, one being positioned with its abutting sides 24 and 25 against the galley end wall 13 and type form side edge 19 and upon the galley bottom Wall 10; and the other lock upon the galley bottom wall 10 with its abutting side 24 against the type form end 17 and its abutting side 25 against the galley side wall 12. The galley 9 being of magnetizable metal, the magnets 2S, 29 and 32 will hold the type form 15 in place.
Referring to Figures 4 to 6, there is therein shown a spring clamp form 20a of the invention, which comprises an L-shaped block 21a of suitable material, such as metal, having preferably right-angularly related arms 35 and 36, providing on their outer sides the right-angularly related abutting sides 24a and 25a for abutting the type form 15 and the galley walls in the same manner as descibed above in connection with Figures 1 to 3.
The block 21a has upper and lower surfaces 22a and 23a, respectively, which are preferably plane and parallel. The arms 35 and 36 have free terminal ends 37 and 38, respectively, which are preferably rounded at their inward sides, as indicated at 39 and 4G, respectively. A rubber or other suitable friction material plug 41, having a lower end 42 projecting slightly below the undersurface of the arm 36, is seated in a socket 43 provided in the arm 36.
Clamping means mounted on the body arm 36 comprises an elongated inverted U-shaped saddle 44 having an elongated bight portion 45 and depending inner and outer legs 46 and 47, respectively. The saddle 44 is slidably secured upon the upper surface of the arm 36 by means of a stud 48 threaded into the arm 36 and passing through a longitudinal slot 49 provided in the bight portion 45. The stud has a retaining head 53 overlying the bight portion 45.
The outer saddle leg 47 overlies the abutting surface 25a of the block 21a. Secured at one end to the inner saddle leg 46, as indicated at 51 and sliding at its other end in a bore 52 provided in the block arm 36 is a shaft 53. Circumposed on the shaft 53 and compressed between the inner saddle leg 46 and the adjacent side of the block arm 36 is a helical spring 54 which serves to urge the outer saddle leg 47 toward the abutting side 25a of the block arm 36.
As indicated in Figure 5, the lock 26a is installed by depressing the lock 20a into either of the type form locking positions illustrated in Figure l, so as to engage the outer saddle leg 47 over either the end wall 13 or one of the side walls 11 and 12 of the galley 9, manual pressure exerted upon the saddle 44 against the resistance of the spring 54 to facilitate positioning of the lock 2da then being removed, so as to enable the spring 54 to clamp the associated galley wall between the outer clamp o leg 47 and the abutting side 25a of the block leg 36. Removal of the lock 20a is facilitated by a reversal of these operations.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, a galley comprising a bottom Wall, upright Walls on said bottom Wall and intersecting in a corner, a rectangular type form resting upon said bottom wall, said type form having an edge abutting one of said upright walls and an edge abutting the other of said upright walls, and locking means comprising first and second locks, each of said locks comprising a block having right angularly related abutting sides and undersides, said blocks being positioned with their undersides upon the galley bottom Wall with their abutting sides severally engaged With said upright walls and with the related edges of the type form, and securing means on each of the lock blocks securably associated with portions of the galley and holding the blocks in place, said galley having magnetizable portions and said securing means comprising magnet means on the blocks in magnetic contact with some of said magnetizable portions.
2. In combination, a galley comprising a bottom wall. upright Walls on said bottom wall and intersecting in a corner, a rectangular type form resting upon said bottom wall, said type form having an edge abutting one of said upright walls and an edge abutting the other of said upright walls, and locking means comprising iirst and second locks, each of said locks comprising a block having right angularly related abutting sides and undersides, said blocks being positioned with their undersides upon the galley bottom wall with their abutting sides severally engaged with said upright walls and with the related edges of the type form, and securing means on each of the lock blocks securably associated with portions of the galley for holding the blocks in place, said galley having magnetizable portions and said securing means comprising magnet means on the blocks in magnetic contact with some of said magnetizable portions, said magnetizable portions comprising the bottom wall and upright walls of the galley, and said magnet means comprising separate permanent magnets having ends exposed at undersides of the blocks and at an abutting side of the blocks.
