This invention relates to an advertising and display box for use in conjunction with the vending of candies, cakes or other edibles, or other suitable products, and has for its primary object the provision of a folding display box which employs means for raising the cover thereof in a convenient manner.
The construction of this invention features a cover which is hingedly secured to a collapsible box. A substantially U-shaped slit is formed in the cover so as to form a window while also forming a center tab which can be folded back upon itself to have an end portion form a handle which, upon actuation, will raise and lower the cover. The cover may have a pane of transparent material fixed to and underlying the window so as to permit the product within the box to be readily observed. The central tab may have suitable indicia thereon indicative of the product within the box for promoting sales of the product.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a cover which is detachably hingedly secured to a box in a manner so as to permit the cover to be readily attached to the box in a convenient manner.
Yet another object of the invention resides in the provision of a central tab having suitable notches therein for engagement with the hinged end of the tab or with the peripheral edge of the cover formed by a U-shaped slit in the cover so as to securely hold the central tab in position for use as a handle for the cover.
A yet further feature of the invention resides in the provision of a central tab having a U-shaped slit therein which will form an extended handle when the central tab is folded back upon itself.
Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a folding display box which may be made of paperboard, cardboard or other suit able materials and of various sizes and shapes as may be desired for displaying and vending various products, which is strong and durable, simple for the shopkeeper to utilize, and which is extremely inexpensive to manufacture, thereby permitting wide distribution and utilizatron.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this folding display box, preferred embodiments of which have been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the invention with the central tab having the notched portions thereof engaged with the peripheral edge of the cover at the window opening;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view as taken along the plane of line 2-2 in Figure l and illustrating in phantom lines the manner in which the cover of the box is raised by actuation of the handle formed by the central tab;
Figure 3 is a partial perspective view illustrating the manner in which the cover may be attached to the box;
Figure 4 is a partial perspective view of a modified form of securing arrangement between the cover and the box; and
Figure 5 is a plan view of an alternate form of the invention employing a cover integrally formed with the box, the box being of the collapsible type.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, and with reference initially to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 through 3, it will be noted that the display box comprising the present invention is generally indicated by reference numeral 16) and comprises a box 12 of any suitable size and shape to which a cover 14 is hingedly attached. The cover 14 is adapted to be formed from a rectangular blank and has its side walls 16 and its end walls is joined by corner tabs 2% of conventional construction. The rear end wall 22 is adapted to be received within the box 12 with a tab 24 cut therefrom extending outwardly of the rear wall 26 of the box 12. The tab 24 is provided with a slot 25 therein for reception of a flap 39 appended to the box 12 or cut from the end wall 26. In this manner, a hinged connection between the cover 14 and the box 12; is attained.
The cover 14 is provided with a U-shaped slit therein forming a window 32, the peripheral edges thereof being indicated by reference numeral 34. A pane of cellophane or other transparent material 36 is bonded to the underside of the cover 14 so as to underly the window 32, thus shielding the contents of the box 12 so as to insure the sanitary condition of the products therein. The rear portions of the slit formed in the cover 14 may converge inward as at 38 and iii, and preferably have notches and i4 therein.
The central tab 46 formed by the slot in the cover is provided with fold lines, as at 43 and 59, so that the central tab as can be folded back on itself. Other fold lines 52 and 54 are formed in the front portions of the central tab 46 so that tabs 56 and 58 are formed. Notches 6i; and 62, as well as notches 64 and 66, are formed in the central tab as. Likewise, a substantially U-shaped slit 6% is formed in the central tab 46 so as to form a handle 7% for the cover 14 when the central tab is folded back upon itself while also increasing the size of the display area of the tab on which suitable advertising indicia 72 can be printed or otherwise applied.
it is to be noted that the tabs 5i; and 58 can be engaged within the slots 42 and 54 to hold the central tab in a position where it is folded back upon itself forming a comparatively rigid angular connection with the cover 14. Alternatively, the tabs 56 and 58 can he engaged with the notches 64 and 56 receiving the lower end portions of the central tab 46 adjacent the hinged connection, as at 73, formed at the fold line between the central tab 4-5 and the cover 14. This optional connecting arrangement assures that a Storekeeper choose which connection is desired and further insures that a suitable connection can be attained and maintained.
In Figure 4, there is shown a modified connection between the cover 14 and the box 12. The tab 24 depending from the cover 14 may be inserted in a slot 76 in the box 12, if so desired.
In the embodiment of the invention as shown in Figure 5, the cover 14 is integrally formed with the box 12, a fold line 78 being provided at the junction of the cover 14 with the box 12. it is to be noted that the box 12 may be of the folding variety so that the invention may be shipped in a flattened position, as is shown in Figure 5.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood, and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to thetexact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling Within the scope of the appended claim a What is claimed as new is as fo-i1ows:'
In combination with a display box having a rear wall, a display cover hingedly secured to said box, said cover having a substantially U-shapel slit therein forming a Window, a transparent pane underlying said Window, a central tab having a first end hingedly attached to cover and having a second free end, said central tab having a second'substantially U-shaped slit therein, said central tab being folded upon itself With said second free end lockingly held adjacent said first hinged end and with said second substantially U-shaped slit forming an u Wardly extending handle, said cover having an opposed pair of slots therein opening into the periphery of said window, said second free end having notches therein, said second free end being engageable with said cover at the peripheral edge of said window adjacent said first hinged end with said cover being received in said notches and 2,771,986 V a V with said second freeend' being'receivedin said slots, an
end Wall attached to said cover, a tab cut from said end engaged in said slot with said end Wall Within said box and engaging said rear Wall whereby said cover will be hingedly mounted for pivotal movement on an axis at the juncture of said tab and said. cover so that upon actua- 7 tion of said handle said cover can be opened.
